Chapter 8

MALORY P.O.V

It was almost two weeks since I had joined Moreland Pack. I wasn’t officially announced as the Luna of this pack however lots of wolves in the pack already knew who I was. Whenever I would go to Brenda or Sonya’s house, wolves from Cortez’s pack would bow their heads in respect. Since it used to make me feel uncomfortable, I hesitantly dared and told an elder lady not to dip her head. She just smiled and agreed.

So ever since then, the wolves used to either smile or wave at me. It was a million times better than having elder people bowing to me.

As for Cortez and me, we didn’t make any kind of progress in our relationship. Every weekday it was the same, Cortez would be gone before I woke up. He wouldn’t be home for dinner either and since he knew I used to wait for him, he had asked Brenda to come and have dinner with me. So from the past two weeks, one day I go to Brenda’s house, one day she comes to our house. I like Brenda, I really do but she isn’t someone of my age and hence I am sometimes uncomfortable to talk to her about Cortez. Besides she will be having her friends in her house and so I would be alone or playing with Mumbles.

Sonya was there but I didn’t want to disturb her every day in her life. I used to call my parents daily and they wanted me to visit home once along with Cortez.

I see Cortez but he barely looks at me. Out of the twenty four hours in a day, he is home only for four hours. Whenever I try to have a conversation with him, his one-word answers would annoy me. We are like two strangers living in a same house. I don’t even know if he eats the breakfast and dinner that I cook. I assume he does because the food wasn’t in the dustbin.

Don’t give up on him; it is the only thing that makes me not to yell at Cortez for his ignorance. Living with him for two weeks and always being the first person to start a conversation has made me pretty comfortable around him. I stutter less nowadays.

Mumbles has happily adjusted to the new place and many kids, mostly little girls from pack come to play with him. He loves the extra attention he is getting.

The only two good things in these past two weeks are one- I am still driving my two-wheeler even though the rear number plate is missing. Two- a pillow is tucked under the edge of my bed, every night. I know Cortez keeps it there every night.

I was currently returning home from college. The rumor in the college too had died down and now I am back to being unnoticed. I really like that. Some guys had even asked me if Cortez is my boyfriend and I didn’t know how to reply for that. I had just walked away from them making some girls call me a snob again.

At present, I was returning home after my college.

I brought my two-wheeler to a halt when I saw the traffic police. Oh No! Oh No! Oh No! The rear side number plate of my two-wheeler was missing ever since that minor accident and I knew this police will make me stop if he sees that. A plan popped in my head. I decided to turn and go wait in a nearby shop until he goes. So planning to be sneaky, I turned my two-wheeler and was about to drive away when the police saw me and began to whistle.

Looking at the mirror, I saw him coming towards me and I groaned.

Blowing his whistle, he walked towards me. “Park at the side” he told me and I did as he said. My eyes widened when I saw few large trucks parked in the side ahead of my small two-wheeler. The drivers of those trucks were all bulky, bearded and looked like they belonged to some gang. My heart started thudding heavily and I gulped.

I didn’t make eye contact with any one of them because I was scared they would attack me. I was a wolf and I am stronger than them but that doesn’t mean I can shift into my wolf in a highway.

The passerby’s would glance at me and my two-wheeler and it made me more nervous. Cortez is going to take my motor cycle away from me and I knew it. He already doesn’t like it and now….

“You have to blow here miss” the police told me and I looked at him confused. I didn’t even sense him coming towards me. He held a small dark grey color machine in his hand. He then disposed the pipe in the machine, opened another packet which had the fresh pipe and inserted it in the machine.

“What?” I asked him when he held the machine in front of my face.

“You have to blow air in this pipe miss” he told me. I had seen other drivers doing that and so I blew air in the pipe too. “Wait here” he said and then walked away. I stood beside my two-wheeler and pulled out my cell phone from my skirt pocket.

I had just pulled it out when an officer, who looked in his late forties walked towards me with another officer following him. This officer looked like the one in charge and I gulped as he stood in front of me.

“Where is your number plate?” he asked me rudely staring at my two-wheeler.

“It fe-fell” I stuttered. Oh My God!

“Fell?” he said in outrage and I blinked. “When did that happen?” he asked me with a frown.

“Two weeks ago” I said and sucked in a breath.

“And you didn’t bother getting a new number plate?” he asked staring at the number plate at the front. I lowered my head. “Show me your driving license” the cop said and I nodded.

When I opened my purse, I realized that my driving license was also missing and I had no idea where it was. I had lost it almost four months ago and I didn’t bother searching for it either. It was somewhere in my old bedroom, I am sure. Why does this happen to me?

I was biting my bottom lip with worry when the cop spoke again, “Where is your driving license?” he asked me and I looked at him with a guilty expression.

“I…. It’s in my h-home” I told Officer Shaw as I saw the name badge pinned to his uniform shirt.

“Home? You drive around without your license?” he snapped again. I knew he would keep on yelling at me and so I scrolled through my contacts looking for my father’s number so that I could ask him to get my license. It was in my bedroom but I don’t know where.

“Whom are you calling?” Officer Shaw snapped. “First commit the mistake and then call your parents to help you or better bribe the cops. Kids these days” he spat. “I don’t know how you get the license in the first place…. ”. During all the time, I had lowered my head and was listening to his rant. He was going on and on and a smile formed on my face because judging by the way he was ranting, it’s like he had a problem with younger generation.

“Why are you smiling?” he burst out and I bit my bottom lip to stop the smile. I didn’t dare look at him for I knew smoke would be emitting from his nose.

“On top of that you aren’t even ashamed of breaking a rule. I am going to cancel your license” he threatened. I mumbled a quick apology and finally called dada. I just hope dada would get the license and shut this rude cop’s mouth.

“Which place do you belong?” he asked me while I patiently waited for dada to pick up.

“Élan” I told him because that’s the place where wolves from Moreland Pack stay.

“Élan” he repeated. “Which house do you belong?”

“Moreland” I told him and Officer Shaw was silent for a minute. The cop behind him, Officer Ellis whispered something which I didn’t bother hearing. When the call got connected, I was cut off by a female’s voice saying that I had low balance in my account.

That was it!

That made me burst out laughing. Why? Why does this happen to me? I was about to go berserk and I knew it. While I lowered my head and continued laughing, both cops stared at me as if I had lost it. I was actually laughing at my fate, because all the bad things had to happen to me today.

“You find this funny?” Officer Shaw asked me and I shook my head. Biting my cheeks, I tried not to laugh, but the cop behind him sniggered and that had me go bananas again.

While Officer Shaw continued to glare, my laughter faded and then I chewed on my bottom lip to stop smiling. Oh No! He is definitely going to cancel my license.

“Are you Peter Moreland’s daughter?” he asked me rudely. His brows were furrowed and he still had that scowl in his face. “Don’t lie. I am going to call up his son and ask. I have seen many kids from Élan claiming to be Peter Moreland’s children. You even spoil dead people’s name.” Officer Shaw said and I gulped. The thought of this cop knowing Cortez and having his number was enough for my knees to weaken.

I considered lying but was scared and so I shook my head.
