Chapter 4

MALORY P.O.V

“He can’t just ask her to leave with him like that” Dada said with a deep frown.

“He is her mate and he has a whole pack to run. He obviously will need her there” Uncle Matt, Zach’s father said to dada.

“But-”

“You did the same with Kerry” Uncle Matt said cutting off whatever dada had to say.

Dada gritted his teeth and ran a hand through his dark hair. “I bet her old man cursed me to face the same thing he did” Dada said, with old man here referring to my gramps. Uncle Matt and Zach began laughing when he said that.

We were in the living room of my house while mama and Aunt Lynne were cooking dinner for us and also Cortez, who right now has gone somewhere with Tyson.

“She is just a child” dada said looking at me and my lower lip trembled. He placed one of his arms around my shoulders and pulled me closer to his chest. “She can’t handle it there well. Let her be here until she completes her education” dada reasoned while a fat tear rolled down my cheek. As soon as I returned home from woods, I found Cortez telling my parents that he is going to take me with him to his pack, tonight.

“Malcolm, Lory is twenty now. You had asked Kerry to move in with you when she was seventeen” dada’s brother pointed out and dada muttered something under his breath.

“Lory doesn’t want to go with him either” dada said and Uncle Matt looked at me, startled.

“Lory?” Uncle Matt called me and I looked at him. “Does your wolf agrees with that?” he asked me.

I want my mate, my wolf growled inside me. She wanted to go with him to Cortez’s pack. She loved her parents too but for her, her first preference is her mate as soon as she met him.

“No” I said and Uncle Matt nodded.

“You have to let her go, Malcolm. He is her mate” Uncle Matt said to his elder brother.

“Why tonight?” dada asked and I pulled away from the hug.

“Only Lory can convince him to change his mind” Uncle Matt said, his green eyes filled with sympathy for me.

“I am not going tonight” I told them and all of them looked at me startled. I couldn’t go like this, all of a sudden. I am his mate but he can’t just order me to come with him. I am leaving my pack and my family to live with him, for the rest of my life. I deserve to say a proper goodbye to my love ones.

No matter what, I am going to talk to Cortez and convince him about this. I will definitely not faint.

I was sitting in the stairs of our porch along with Mumbles and eating chips. It was around seven in the evening and my parents had gone to Zach’s house, to give me some alone time to convince Cortez, who was going to come soon.

As soon as my wolf perked her ears, I knew Cortez had arrived. I smiled when his wonderful scent hit my nostrils and stood up when he got out of his car and walked towards me.

“Where’s your bag?” he asked with a frown and I gulped. Now is your chance Lory, you are going to be brave and you are not going to faint.

“I… I am n-not coming to-today” I said and let out a breath because it felt like a heavy weigh has been lifted off my shoulders. There wasn’t any reply from Cortez for a long time and that made me really nervous.

He is furious. He really is. That is why he is silent.

“Why?” he asked me with a growl and my heart started beating rapidly. I was kind if hoping he wouldn’t ask me that, even though I knew that was inevitable. My legs felt like jelly and I held the railing for support. Mumbles, my brave dog, hid behind me after hearing Cortez’s growl.

No fainting.

“P-Please don’t be mad. It’s just; I can’t l-leave like that. I have a lot of t-things to do and m-moving to your pack… all of a… sudden isn’t easy f-for me. I m-meant, I cannot do it in a day’s notice. I am ready to come with you, b-but just not today.” I said and then looked up at Cortez to find him staring at me.

“I am sorry” I added and curled my bottom lip nervously.

“Saturday” he said and I looked at him confused.

“Pardon?” I asked him.

“I will be picking you up on Saturday and you will be coming with me on Saturday.” He stated and I found myself nodding at that. Five days. He was giving me five more days and I was really grateful for that because I thought he wouldn’t even hear what I had to say.

“I will be seeing you on Saturday” Cortez said and turned but I remembered one more thing that I had to ask.

“Wait” I said and he stopped in his tracks. “Can Mumbles come too?” I asked Cortez.

Cortez turned to look at me and his gaze fell on Mumbles who cowered behind me, whining softly. His gaze didn’t soften when he looked at Mumbles and so to convince him, I spoke again. “H-he is my dog and has n-never stayed away from me” I said softly, hoping to convince Cortez.

Cortez looked at me and then sighed. He nodded once and a smile crept on my face. “Thank you” I literally squealed. “I promise he will not bother you… or anyone. He is a really good dog. I know he does have some bad habit like hiding my sandals but other than that, he is good. I will assure you that he will not do anything bad in your pack” I said looking at Mumbles who was busy staring at the bag of chips in my hand.

Cortez merely shook his head, turned and proceeded to walk ahead.

“Wait” I called him and he stopped again with a low growl. I knew I was irritating him but I needed to ask another important question with him too.

“Can I get my two-wheeler?” I asked him and prayed that his answer was a yes. “There… that’s my two-wheeler” I said pointing my finger to my right, where my sky blue scooter was parked next to dada’s car. “I…I use it to go to college” I said and wished he could understand my need for wanting to bring it with me. “I have a driving license too” I added even though I didn’t remember where it was at the moment. Yes! I am careless like that.

Cortez grunted something under his breath and I pinched my lips when I couldn’t understand what he said. “You don’t want me to bring it?” I asked my tone sad. I really, really wanted to take my two-wheeler with me.

“You can bring it” he said and continued walking ahead.

Once his words processed in my brain, I jumped in delight making some chips fall down and Mumbles gobbling it. “Thank you so much Cortez” I said and he froze in his tracks. He turned to look at me; his blue-green eyes had a strange expression that I couldn’t quite process. He looked… irritated?

A blush crept its way on my face due to his gaze and I gulped. I think he turned to face me because I called his name for the first time? I wasn’t really sure.
