CHAPTER 18

CHAPTER 18

Lucas glances at me and then says, “Even if she does have her mating ceremony, she will stay here with me while we wait for that event.”

Valerie makes a clicking sound of disappointment, “That's not how this works. She has to live with her family before the mating ceremony.”

I don't know what the two of them are planning but I don't want to leave Lucas.

“You’re now a part of this pack again, Sarah,” Hunter says, coolly. “I hope you don’t disappoint us again with your actions.”

“I don't want to be part-“

Lucas squeezes my shoddier, forcing me to fall silent.

“If she has to go back to the pack, then I’ll come with her,” He says, calmly.

I see the rage in Hunter’s eyes as Lucas his arm around my waist, yanking me into his chest in a possessive move.

“You-“ Hunter takes a step forward, angrily and Valerie intervenes, her voice sweet as always but her eyes hard.

“I'm afraid that's not going to be possible,” She said. “You’re the pack hunter. Other packmates are scared of you. Having you in the den would make everyone uncomfortable and we can’t have that. Sarah can survive a few days away from you. I mean,” She lets out a small laugh. “you two just met. How attached can you two even be?”

“I can’t sleep without him,” I say, on impulse and I see Lucas lift a brow at my boldness but if he wants to act possessive then so can I.

The look of irritation on Valerie’s face is a sight to see but she forces herself to go on, “I’m sure you two think so but it’s not going to be that hard.”

“I disagree,” Lucas says, calmly. “First of all, if Sarah goes back to the den where you two labelled her a traitor, she’s going to be under constant danger. I’m her mate. It’s my job to protect her.”

Valerie puts on a sorrowful expression, "Nobody hates her in the den, Lucas. Sarah's own actions brought her to this point. She has to regain the trust of the pack. You don't know her as well as Hunter and I do which is why you don't know the gravity of her actions. However, despite all that, we are willing to move past everything and accept her back into the pack but it has to be on our terms.”

“No,” Lucas gives her a dismissive look. “Since I’m her mate, it’s going to be on my terms for she stays here. And if you think that I’m going to let her go anywhere without me, especially with the two of you, you must think I’m a fool.”

Hunter growls, “She’s part of my pack and she doesn’t get a say in who she goes with. And neither do you! How do I know you're not lying about being her mate? She was so desperately in love with me till a few weeks ago. You think I’m going to believe-?”

I pull down my shirt collar revealing a bite mark, “How is this for proof?”

Hunter goes pale as does Valerie.

They don’t know that it’s a temporary mark that Lucas keeps putting on me so that it’s easier for him to control his instincts.

“You little whore!” Hunter spits out as if realising that I truly mated with Lucas.

However. Lucas has had enough and he snarls, “I think it’s time you and I do have it out.”

“No!” Valerie cries out, throwing herself in between the two. “Hunter let’s go. We’ll sort everything out later.”

But Hunter doesn’t seem to be in the mood to go and he glares at me, “You’re coming with us!”

“The hell she is!” Lucas growls. “If she goes, I go.”

“We’ll sort this out later,” Valerie repeats, forcing Hunter to look at her but his eyes are stuck on the red mating mark on my neck.

However, Valerie succeeded in dragging him away, clearly realizing that things are getting far too heated and possibly to re-form her next steps.

Once they're gone, my knees feel weak and I slumped to the ground, only for Lucas to catch me and he says, worriedly, “Are you alright?”

I shake my head, “What happened? What just happened?”

He gives me a proud look, “You gave them a run for their money. I don't know what you would like before we met but they clearly expected you to bow down and you didn’t.”

“Because I knew you would back me up,” I mumble, still feeling shell-shocked.

“Always,” He says, quietly.

I look towards the tree line and my hands shake, “Why did they accept the back into the pack?”

Lucas follows my gaze and then he looks at me, “But isn't that what you wanted?”

I give him a horrified look, “No! Do you know what they'll do to me in the den? Not just the two of them but the rest of the pack? They think I'm a traitor. God knows what else they’ve been told. They’ll torture me and shun me and I can’t take that. I would rather be here with you!”

Lucas’s eyes turn tight with anger, “They’re not going to stop coming after you, Sarah. Now that they know you can communicate with the wolves, the pack isn’t going to let go of you that easily. The reason the Cold Mountain Wolves went into hiding was because of how their abilities were coveted. Their females were kidnapped and forcibly bred.”

My face turns pale.

“I don't know how you ended up with this ability but it’s clear that both Valerie and Hunter can see the use of it. I think you’re safer right now within your own family. Because Hunter is going to make sure that he sends me on more missions to keep me away from you so that you’re vulnerable. I think you need to return to the pack for a while.”

So that my father can protect me.

My whole body goes cold.
