The next morning I got ready normally, I had hardly been able to sleep well because of what I had seen. A huge wolf prowling around here. It was super dangerous since someone could have walked outside and they could have attacked him. I had breakfast, Lucas was leaving the house without even eating and I didn't have time to offer him anything. Dad was already gone. I was the only one here. After brushing my teeth I took my backpack, when I opened the door I was surprised to see someone standing at my door, he had his hand raised as if he was about to knock.
Jon.
"Hello, what are you doing here?" I wanted to know, closing behind me.
“How are you? I was passing by and I was wondering if I could accompany you to classes. Since we are going in the same direction.” he tells me, Jon was a very handsome boy, tall, fair skinned and blue eyes. His hair was blonde. He seemed like a good match but I had something that didn't compare to Kessler.
I can't believe I thought that.
“Sure. Why not? Where do you live?” I asked, the weather was still the same as yesterday. It was normal because we were in winter. There was no sun, only gray clouds, no wind, but fog and cold. I adjusted my yellow jacket.
"Following this path." He pointed to the same road but further on. It gave me chills because there was only forest there—even inside.
“Is far away. Aren't you afraid of being there alone?” at that moment I remembered the wolf from yesterday and the others because I knew that wolves walked in packs. So there's a pack of huge wolves lurking around here. I began to think at that moment that perhaps the disappearances had to do with them.
It made a lot of sense.
We were walking quietly down the road when a car stopped next to us. I rolled my eyes because I knew who it was.
'You're not wasting time, Jonny.” Kesler snapped. He sounded annoyed.
"Relax, Walton," he snapped again. Kessler got out of the car and walked around until he reached Jon and faced him.
"We've talked about this before, Cox, don't make me repeat it." Kessler looked so imposing and his gaze was one of pure hate. I don't know what these two were up to but I didn't like it at all.
"That's enough," I pushed them away, "don't bother, Kessler.”
"Yeah, better go and take care of Riley, your future spore." When Jon said that, I froze in the same place. Did he say future wife? I looked at Kessler as if I was berating him or waiting for an explanation. I didn't know why I acted that way if I didn't care about this boy.
“Shut up” Kessler wanted to go to Jon but I stopped him but it didn't help because Kessler took advantage of the situation and took me by the waist, squeezing me tight towards him.
"Get away from me, Walton." I clenched my fists, ready to hit him. I knew the blonde girl I’d seen him with was Riley. And now I knew they were getting married.
“Eva, please don't ever believe a shit Jonny tells you. Do not do it.” He told me, he sounded sincere. At that moment he slowly released me, got in his car and drove off. I felt a strange emptiness when he left.
“Sorry about the show, Kessler has always been so arrogant.”
“It doesn't matter.” We keep walking. I felt somewhat uncomfortable.
"Have you gotten used to the place?" He asks me.
“More or less.” I wanted to ask him about the wolves but I didn't dare the truth.
When we got to the school I looked at the police car parked in front. There were people, several boys outside. I knew it was the car my father drives. Kessler and the Riley girl were off to the side, with their group of friends. Kessler seemed angry, he looked at us then.
“What's happening?” I asked Jon, ignoring Kessler and his little girlfriend.
"I don't know," he replies. I advanced to the entrance, at that moment my father appeared in my field of vision.
"Dad, what are you doing here?" I wanted to know. As soon as my father saw me, he took me by the arm and took me to a place further away from people.
“Eva, we have reports of a missing girl yesterday afternoon. In the office we received a call from him, asking for help and assistance. He gave us the address of the school but when we arrived there was nothing. Only blood in the library. That's why we think maybe someone did something to her.”
I felt something in my chest when he said that, I swallowed hard thinking about that huge wolf from yesterday.
“Who was?” I wanted to know, with a lump in my throat.
“She only identified herself as Charlotte on the call.”
Those words resonated with me, Lottie. It was her.
“Lottie,” I whispered.
"Did you know her?"
"I only met her yesterday. She's dead?”
“We don't know that yet, there was a lot of blood so your chances are slim. If it is, it has to be somewhere in the woods. Eva, please go straight home when you get out of school. Don't stay alone anywhere and no, listen to me carefully, don't trust anyone” he said that, dad looked behind me. Following his gaze I realized that he was looking at Kessler and his group, who are very weird by the way. Kessler looked at us too, I felt his gaze fixed on me, like daggers.
“I'll do it do not worry. If you have any news of Lottie, please let me know.”
“Peaceful. Dad gave me a warm hug and then left.”
I couldn't believe something like this had happened, I felt shocked and I didn't even know how much time had passed under this tree since my father left but I felt like it was a lot. When I came back to myself and reacted, I turned around to go inside, however, a hand took my arm and turned me around.
"Kessler," I called his name.
“Always so lonely, Bailey.”
Now he knew my last name.
"I’m better alone than in bad company," I attacked him.
He half smiled.
“I heard something happened to your friend. I'm sorry.”
I raised an eyebrow.
"Are you really sorry?"
“Yes, tough you do not believe it.”
“You're not fooling me, Kessler Walton, I know you're hiding something. I'm sorry.”
“What?” he laughed “You barely know us and you think we're serial killers or something like that. You watch a lot of movies, kitty.”
“I'm not playing, Walton. I always listen to my intuition and my intuition tells me that you are strange and mysterious and have something wrong inside.”
"Maybe" he took my arm very tightly "So you better stay away from me, kitten, maybe there's a beast inside me that wants to devour you."
Okay, maybe Kessler was joking, but deep down I felt like it was more of a confession. Although maybe I'm delusional because I'm so nervous about what happened with Lottie.
“Last night I looked at a wolf. And it was huge” I got out of his grip “I'm sure my father doesn't know about them because otherwise there would be hunters looking for them right now to kill them.”
Kessler's smile disappeared at that moment, as if he had been annoyed by what I said.
"Shut your mouth Bailey, if you dare say anything you could be next." at that moment his face softened “And I don't want anything bad to happen to you “” he caressed my hair. A strange gesture for me.
"Kessler?" a woman's voice brought us out of our "moment" when I looked behind him it was his girlfriend Riley.
