Kill The Enemy

Joe turned his head, looking at Briana for a moment. The girl's face looked pale, and she was holding back tears. Then, he took a few steps back. His eyes stared at his life-threatening opponent. He didn't have much time. He had to think, find a way to save himself and Briana.

"You guys won't get your wish easily. Fight me first," Joe said, then he reached for his gun, pulled the trigger and shot the rope binding Briana's body. It worked.

Briana fell to the ground. Her elbows and knees were sore. But she wouldn't let herself complain for long. She had to help Joe against those two.

"Are you okay?" asked Joe as he glanced at Briana briefly.

"I'm fine," Briana replied. She walked over to Joe.

Although Briana was trying to look very brave, she was actually controlling the fear that surrounded her. Her heart was beating very fast. She realized both of their lives would not be long in coming. But, she didn't want those two men to kill them so easily.

"Don't go far," Joe pleaded.

Joe focused his attention on the two men. Before he succumbed to defeat, he would fight them with all his might. It didn't matter if he ended up dying with Briana, what was certain was that he had fought hard.

"Hey, you. Don't talk so much," the man shouted.

The man pulled the trigger of his rifle. He pointed the muzzle of the gun right at Joe's chest. He smiled and grinned, then fired the bullet.

Joe managed to dodge. But the bullet had grazed his arm. Joe felt blood flowing and soaked his sleeve. He grimaced in pain, then he fired twice at the woman, piercing her left breast and stomach. The woman fell to the ground covered in blood, and died not long after.

"Adel... Adel," the man called out, mourning the loss of his beloved.

Then he ran towards Joe with a horrible face from holding back his anger. He attacked blindly, throwing punches and kicks at Joe. He wanted to avenge Joe for causing his lover's death.

With difficulty Joe managed to parry the blows. But only for a while. Finally, he was overwhelmed by the parry because one of his hands was injured. He fell backwards. There was no other choice for him. Soon he would be lying on the ground.

Then came the sound of a barrage of gunfire that startled Joe. He stared wide-eyed at the source of the sound. He froze when he realized it was Briana who shot the man to the ground.

"I killed him," Briana said with trembling lips. Her eyes were wide as she stared at the rifle that was slowly falling out of her hands. Her whole body shook violently, and she burst into tears.

Joe ran over to her. "It's okay. You saved both our lives." Joe hugged Briana tightly while patting her back lightly.

"Are you okay?" asked Briana as she glanced at Joe's injured arm.

Joe looked at his arm, then shook his head slowly. "This is nothing compared to all the cuts I've gotten in the past," Joe said trying to remain calm, even though he was now enduring the pain that pierced his skin.

Briana immediately fell silent after hearing Joe's words. She seemed to be reminded of the previous incident when they were making love a few days earlier. Her eyes had caught some of the scars on Joe's back. But at that time she didn't pay much attention to it because she was focused on their romance.

"I'll look for more firewood. This fire won't last much longer," Joe said after successfully starting the bonfire.

"Go away. .... I can take care of myself. You don't have to worry about me." Briana showed the rifle that she had used to kill earlier.

Joe said no more. After making sure the surroundings were safe, he walked away. He carried the rifle in case he encountered wild animals later.

Meanwhile, Briana sat hugging her knees. In front of her, tongues of flame danced beautifully, hypnotizing her for a few moments. Then she gasped as she heard a strange sound behind her, the sound of dry leaves being stepped on by someone. She reached for her rifle, then her eyes gazed warily.

"It's me. You can lower your rifle."

It was Joe's voice that had returned. Joe threw some branches onto the campfire. He was carrying a dead rabbit.

"We'll have this for dinner," Joe said, laying the poor animal on the ground. "Can I borrow that knife you still have?"

Briana reached into her shirt. She pulled out the knife she had tucked into her pants and gave it to Joe. It had been tucked away since the morning Joe handed it to her.

"I don't want to eat that," Briana said with a shudder as she looked at the dried blood on the rabbit's stomach.

"Why wouldn't you? You haven't eaten anything since this afternoon." Joe's hands deftly skinned the rabbit. It was as if he had gotten used to the job before.

"I'd rather starve than eat that rabbit."

Joe didn't argue. His body felt tired. He would rather not argue with Briana. Now all he wanted was to finish his dinner, then go to bed.

"Tonight we can sleep with this." Joe patted the pile of branches that still had leaves for their bed tonight.

Briana smiled slightly. She looked at the bed that Joe had prepared. It looked uncomfortable, but she would try to sleep on it anyway. Joe had been kind enough to take care of her, so she shouldn't protest.

"Thank you," Briana said, and then she lay down, curled up with her back to Joe.

"Get some sleep. I'll catch up with you in a minute," Joe said, then threw a dry twig into the fire, making the flames burn even hotter.

Briana tried to close her eyes. She could faintly hear the howls of the wolf packs as they howled at each other. The wolves made her feel uneasy.

"You don't have to be afraid. I'm right here." Joe lay down beside Briana. He turned Briana's body to face him. Then he hugged her tightly.

The next morning. They woke up to the roar of a helicopter flying right above them. Joe immediately stood up, and ran to an open area where the helicopter driver could see them clearly.

"Hey .... We're here!" shouted Jo loudly. He grabbed a wooden branch and waved it in the air.

Briana rose to her feet and followed suit. "Hey .... Don't leave us!" Briana shouted as she saw the helicopter flying away. Her shoulders slumped, and her face turned sad.

"There's no need to be sad. I'm sure they'll be back here." Joe tried to calm her down. Though he was not sure of his own words.

Then they turned their heads together as they heard the sound of a helicopter not far away. Joe picked up his rifle, as well as Briana's. Without waiting long, he grabbed Briana's hand, pulling her to run in the direction of the helicopter. He smiled broadly because soon they could go back home.
