Chapter 4 Divorce Sebastian
The villa had no heating, and the large room was as cold as death.
Eleanor kicked off her high heels and stumbled into the bathroom like a drunkard, collapsing in the bathtub like a dead person.
It took her four years to completely exhaust herself from liking Sebastian to now feeling endless despair.
On this day,it seemed that she had cried all her tears for a lifetime. Eleanor put her hand on her heart and bitterly mocked herself: "Clearly my stomach hurts, why am I pretending it's my heart?"
Her phone suddenly vibrated in her bag. Eleanor reflexively sat up and quickly opened her bag to retrieve the phone. When she saw the incoming call information on the screen, she felt as if all of her strength had been drained from her body.
It wasn't him... What are you hoping for,Eleanor?
She stared blankly at the phone for two seconds before sliding up with stiff fingers to answer the call.
"David." Eleanor's voice was hoarse, like a blade scraping against a sharpening stone; it sounded somewhat harsh.
David Miller was childhood friends with Eleanor. To Eleanor,David was like an older brother to her.
On his end of the line,David asked worriedly: "Eleanor, why is your voice so hoarse? Are you sick?"
"I have a bit of a cold. Just woke up after taking a nap..."
"Eleanor," interrupted David concernedly. "Are you trying to lie even to me? Have you forgotten that I'm also your doctor? I can tell apart voices right after waking up versus those affected by crying due to illness."
She couldn't explain anything and could only laugh bitterly in response.
"Eleanor, can you tell me why you're crying?"
Eleanor held onto her phone while staring at the wooden floorboards; nobody likes exposing their weakest points. She shook her head and refused,"I can't."
David had to change the subject: "What were the results of your medical examination today?"
"It's fine."
David said,"If you don't want to say it then forget it. I have the qualifications to check your medical report myself at that hospital."
David was a chief surgeon at that hospital; checking her report would be an easy task for him.
Eleanor lost her composure: "Cancer. Late-stage gastric cancer."
"How is this possible... You're still so young..." David muttered softly, his voice gradually choking up.
"Come to the hospital and let me re-examine you," he suggested.
Eleanor refused: "No matter how many times I get checked, the result will always be the same. David,my body is mine alone; perhaps this is just retribution..."
"Nonsense! Eleanor listen to me. Stay in the hospital for treatment properly; you'll recover..." David's voice was filled with sorrow. How could Eleanor let herself become like this? David didn't know how to persuade her sometimes - it wasn't about whether she wanted or not wanted to live but rather if fate allowed it or not - her time was already limited and there were only two options given by hospitals: either stay in for several more years or give up on treatment and leave everything up to fate... Either way meant death.
"Eleanor, divorce Sebastian. Look at what he has done to you during these four years together."
Divorce? Eleanor never thought about divorcing Sebastian before.
Eleanor tightly gripped her phone until her knuckles turned white from exertion before finally saying with great effort: "I'll consider it."
David advised her again and asked that she go back tomorrow for another check-up,but Eleanor only gave lip service without truly taking his words into heart.
Aside from being Sebastian's wife, she also managed Stone's family business; there were always various matters pressing down on her.
A person's endurance is like that of a camel - it can carry heavy loads under high pressure, but often the straw that breaks its back is just one more added to the pile.
After hanging up,Eleanor casually threw her phone onto the bedside table and opened a drawer to retrieve two bottles of medicine: painkillers and sleeping pills. She took two pills from each bottle before lying down on the bed.
She didn't know if it was due to the effects of medication or not,but her brain began feeling muddled. She had frequent nightmares as if being pressed by ghosts; she couldn't breathe properly with something heavy weighing down on her chest. As she struggled to wake up while shaking her head, she suddenly realized that Sebastian was pressing against her.
"Sebastian... Why did you come back?"
