Chapter 3 Can't Bear to Part
Annie arrived at her friend Fiona Barkley's place with a suitcase in hand. She raised her hand and lightly knocked on the door, standing quietly beside it, waiting patiently.
Both Annie and Fiona were orphans who grew up together in an orphanage and could be said to be as close as sisters. Annie remembered when Brandon took her away, Fiona told her: "Annie if he doesn't want you anymore, remember to come home." It was because of this sentence that Annie had the courage not to take Brandon's house.
Fiona quickly opened the door and saw that it was Annie. Her mouth immediately curved upwards into a smile with raised eyebrows. "Annie, why are you here?"
Annie tightened her grip on the handle of the suitcase and said somewhat embarrassedly: "Fiona, I've come to seek refuge with you."
Only then did Fiona see the luggage in her hand and instantly froze with a puzzled expression on her face? "What happened?"
Annie pretended nothing had happened and smiled. "I broke up with him."
Fiona paused for a moment before looking at Annie, who was forcing herself to smile.
Her face was so thin that it made deep eye sockets stand out even more prominently while she looked pale.
Standing outside in the cold wind made her body seem paper-thin.
Seeing such an Annie suddenly made Fiona feel heartbroken for her friend.
She hurried forward and hugged Annie tightly, saying, "Don't be sad. I'm with you."
Hearing this sentence caused tears to well up in Annie's eyes uncontrollably.
She hugged back tightly onto Fiona while gently patting her back, saying, "I'm fine, don't worry about me."
Fiona knew she was just comforting herself by doing so since she knew how much Annie loved Brandon over these past five years.
To gather one million dollars to pay back Brandon, Annie worked hard and foolishly thought that this would change Brandon's impression of her. But in the end, she was still ruthlessly abandoned by him.
Fiona suddenly remembered the rainy night five years ago...
If Annie hadn't sold herself for Luke Stone, she wouldn't have met Brandon.
Then Annie would definitely have lived a happy life.
Unfortunately, everything couldn't be redone...
Annie didn't want Fiona to feel sad with her; after gently pushing her away, she smiled softly at Fiona, saying, "Are you not willing to take me in? You've kept me standing outside in the cold wind for so long that I'm almost freezing!"
Seeing that Annie was still as strong as before made Fiona slowly let go of her worries. She believed that Annie would soon get over it since they were both unwanted children who had been abandoned many times before. As long as they lived well, there wasn't any obstacle they couldn't overcome.
Thinking like this made Fiona feel better; she took hold of Annie's suitcase and led her into the house, "Don't say anything about whether or not I'll take you in anymore; this is your home now! Stay here for however long you want!"
After speaking, she turned around and brought out a clean set of pyjamas, handing them over to Annie, saying, "Go take a shower first while I make some delicious food for you. Then sleep well without thinking about anything else."
Annie took the pyjamas obediently, nodding, "Okay."
Fiona always treated her unconditionally like a beam of light warming up every aspect of her life.
It was just too bad that it wouldn't be much longer due to late-stage heart failure until it took away Fiona's life from this world.
If Fiona knew she would leave soon, then perhaps she'd cry.
She didn't want to make such a gentle and kind person cry.
She looked towards the busy figure in the kitchen and slowly walked over, saying, "Fiona, I want to quit my job."
Fiona nodded approvingly. "You should rest; these past few years, you've been working so hard just for that little bit of overtime pay. You should quickly resign and rest at home while leaving money-making matters to me from now on!"
Annie's heart warmed up as she obediently replied with tears in her eyes before turning around and heading into the bathroom.
Fate had never favoured her.
Since it was destined for them to part ways, then let her spend these last three months accompanying Fiona by her side well.
The next morning, after putting on makeup and covering up her pale face with thick powder, Annie got up to go resign from work.
Just as she sat down at her desk preparing to write out a resignation letter on the computer, Rolla came rolling over in her chair, asking, "Annie, have you checked your email?"
Annie shook her head. She was taken away by Brandon on the weekend, so she didn't have time to check her emails. Rolla told her that Miss Sterling, the chairman's daughter, would come to take over as CEO today. Annie had no impression of the chairman's daughter and wasn't interested anyway since she would resign soon; it didn't matter who took over as CEO.
However, Rolla was very interested and gossiped about how Miss Sterling had just returned from studying abroad with a PhD in business management but lacked practical experience.
Mia sitting next to Rolla, sneered and said: "Who dares to gossip about her? She is Brandon Ross's crush."
