Chapter 4 What Do You Want?

Upon further reflection, Evelyn realized something was amiss. Dermot had never met her before; he shouldn't even recognize her.

So, why was Dermot here?

Not just Evelyn, the others were also surprised to see Dermot.

They did not know Dr. Kyte, but they knew Dermot Doyle.

Dermot is a celebrity who often appears on TV!

Seeing the man who frequently appeared on television, the patient's wife finally nodded. The doctor must be competent enough to have such a big figure vouch for her.

The patient was wheeled into the operating room. Evelyn glanced at Dermot, nodded slightly, and then turned to enter the operating room.

She didn't know why he had suddenly appeared and why he was vouching for her, but she had no time to ask questions. Saving lives was always the priority.

The operating room light went on, and a group of people waited outside, including Dermot.

Three hours later.

The operating room light went off, and the door opened. A nurse came out first, and the patient's wife immediately surrounded her. "Nurse, how is my husband? How was the surgery?"

"The surgery was very successful, and the patient is no longer in life-threatening danger," the nurse replied.

Everyone breathed a sigh of relief except Dermot, who seemed unsurprised by the outcome.

Soon, the nurse wheeled out the patient, and the family followed, leaving only Dermot at the door of the operating room.

When Evelyn came out of the operating room, she noticed him immediately. He also saw her and walked toward her. "Hello, Dr. Kyte."

"Hello, Mr. Doyle," she responded, her voice weak from the three-hour surgery.

Dermot intended to get straight to the point because Cassie was in a serious condition, but hearing her weak voice, he suppressed his eagerness. "I'd like to invite you to dinner, if you would honor me with your presence."

Evelyn frowned and instinctively declined his invitation. "Mr. Doyle, you can go straight to the point."

She thought, 'You haven't invited me to dinner for once in the past two years, and now right after our divorce, you want to take me out? Isn't that absurd?'

Although she knew that Dermot didn't recognize her and had no idea that Dr. Kyte was his ex-wife who he had just divorced yesterday, Evelyn still felt reluctant and wanted nothing to do with him.

"Alright then." Dermot was a straightforward person in the first place. "I would like you to operate on a patient. These are the medical records."

He handed over the documents he had prepared earlier.

Evelyn took them and immediately saw a photo of a smiling girl with an oval face and large eyes.

She thought, 'So, Dermot ignored me for two years because of this girl? How affectionate is that! But I don't care anymore. We've divorced, and he can love whoever he wants.'

As she carefully reviewed Cassie Ackers' medical records, her expression grew more serious, and she understood why Dermot had come to her.

After a while, she handed back the medical records. "Her condition is very serious, as you must be aware."

"Yes." He nodded, his face unusually grave. "She underwent one surgery but relapsed. Now, almost everyone says there's no hope."

But he didn't want to give up, especially when Leonard Ackers had died trying to save him.

Brain tumor...

The first surgery was difficult, and the second surgery after her relapse would be even more challenging.

Perhaps sensing her hesitation, Dermot added immediately, "You can name your terms. Anything within my power."

Evelyn looked at him. Everyone thought Dermot was cold and ruthless, so she was surprised that he would do anything for his loved one.

"Where is she? I need to see the patient first," she said. Although she didn't want any business with Dermot, as a doctor, she couldn't just stand by and watch someone die, even though this person was Dermot's lover.

"She's at the Doyle family's private hospital. I can take you to see her right now," he said, somewhat surprised that Evelyn had agreed so readily. He had thought she would take the opportunity to ask for things.

But Evelyn frowned at his words. "Not at Moris Hospital?"

"No. The private hospital has better facilities all around. If you perform the surgery there, the success rate will be higher." The private hospital had state-of-the-art equipment and the best medical conditions, so he wouldn't have Cassie stay anywhere else.

However, Evelyn shook her head, apologizing, "I'm sorry, then I can't help Ms. Ackers."

"Why?" Dermot asked, his voice tight, believing she had initially agreed.

Evelyn looked helpless and was about to explain when Dermot pulled out a check and handed it to her. "Don't worry about money."

Evelyn merely glanced at it. The amount was enough to drive anyone ecstatic, but she just smiled lightly and said, "It's a lot of money, but money is not omnipotent."

"What do you want then?" Dermot asked, his anger simmering, thinking she wanted more.
