Chapter 5 Cassie Is Lucky
"Mr. Doyle, according to regulations, licensed physicians must practice within their registered medical institutions. My registration is with Moris Hospital, so... You understand what I mean, right?" she explained so much for the sake of the patient.
"You mean you can't perform the surgery in a private hospital?" he asked.
"That's right." She didn't want to jeopardize her medical career.
Dermot fell silent and hesitated, clearly not expecting such regulations.
"If that's all, I should get going. You better make decisions soon, Mr. Doyle." Seeing Dermot's hesitation, Evelyn knew he was reluctant to transfer the patient to Moris Hospital. He probably distrusted the facilities and conditions there.
If that was the case, there was nothing more she could help with.
Evelyn disappeared from Dermot's view. A few minutes later, Todd approached. "Mr. Doyle, did Dr. Kyte agree to perform the surgery on Ms. Ackers?"
Dermot shook his head. However, she didn't refuse. He was the hesitating one.
Todd, unaware of Dermot's struggle, was slightly surprised. "They say the more renowned the doctor, the stranger their personality. It seems to hold true."
He thought, 'Dr. Kyte is indeed a tough person. She even refused Mr. Doyle. Women are so hard!'
With what had happened yesterday, the hospital staff showed more respect to Evelyn, and patients to be operated by her were less resistant.
In one day, Evelyn performed three surgeries, exhausting her colleagues. Yet, she remained energetic.
"Any more surgeries today?" she asked Marina, who was behind her.
"No more for today." Marina shook her head. The neurosurgery department at Moris Hospital had been below average, so there weren't many patients.
However, she had a feeling that everything was about to change with Dr. Kyte joining them.
"Dr. Kyte, I apologize for underestimating you before. You are definitely the most impressive neurosurgeon I've ever met," another doctor said, admiration in his eyes.
"And the most dedicated," another chimed in with a bitter smile.
Evelyn laughed, "Tired already? I once performed six surgeries in one day, from dawn till dusk without a break."
At that, everyone gave her thumbs up.
They all knew how long one neurosurgery could last, and constant vigilance was needed due to the complexity of brain nerves. One surgery would be exhausting enough. Six was unimaginable.
"Now you know how amazing Dr. Kyte is," Marina said proudly, confident in her idol.
"Indeed, we do."
"Alright, everyone, thank you for your hard work today. I'll treat you all to a big dinner tonight," Evelyn told them. It was time to bond with the department.
"No need for you to pay. The director already said he would treat you to a welcome dinner."
Laughing and joking, they all headed toward the director's office.
Suddenly, a tall figure approached. Everyone was shocked when they recognized that it was Dermot.
Why was he here again?
Everyone looked at Evelyn, knowing he was probably here for her surgical skills. Realizing such an influential figure was seeking Dr. Kyte's help, they held her in even higher esteem.
"Go ahead with your tasks. We'll meet up tonight," she told them, acting as if she hadn't noticed Dermot.
They quickly dispersed, leaving only Dermot and Evelyn in the hallway.
Evelyn looked up at the man before her. "Mr. Doyle, I assume you've made your decision."
Dermot nodded. "I've transferred Cassie here. She's already in the ward. When can you come to check on her?"
Evelyn was satisfied, appreciating Dermot's decisiveness.
"I can do it now," she replied. Having no other urgencies, she wanted to assess Cassie's condition soon. If surgery was necessary, she needed to make many preparations.
The two headed toward the ward. Along their way, Evelyn remained silent, ignoring Dermot completely.
Inside the ward, Cassie was pale and frail due to her serious condition.
Cassie looked up and noticed the stunning woman right away.
"Dermot, who is she?"
"This is your surgeon, Dr. Kyte," he introduced.
Cassie was shocked, not expecting her surgeon to be so young. Had she not known Dermot's character, she might have thought he was joking.
"Hello, Dr. Kyte, thank you for helping me," she said weakly, her face colorless from her illness.
Evelyn nodded. "I've reviewed your medical records. Don't worry. It's not a big deal."
"Really?" Cassie could hardly believe it. The private hospital had given up on saving her!
