Chapter 6 Her Pride

"I promise you," Evelyn said, her lips curling into a confident smile.

Cassie was lucky. If Evelyn had not divorced Dermot, Dr. Kyte might still be in retirement, and Cassie would never have had the chance to be saved.

After briefly assessing Cassie's condition, she went out of the ward with Dermot. It was only then that her smile faded from her face. "You should have had her undergo surgery earlier."

"I know." Dermot nodded. "But I found you just recently."

"There are other surgeons in the country who can perform the operation," Evelyn said, not understanding why Dermot insisted on having her do it.

"Maybe you're right, but..." Dermot paused, then added, "I don't want to take any risks."

Dr. Kyte's reputation was internationally renowned. She was trained by a top neurosurgeon and was the most skilled neurosurgeon nowadays.

So, he preferred to wait until he found Evelyn rather than put Cassie at the slightest risk.

Hearing this, Evelyn was a bit down as she thought, 'Dermot, it turns out that you can be so considerate. Then why haven't you ever been considerate to your wife, whom you have never met? No, your ex-wife.'

She was upset not because she liked Dermot but simply because she had her pride.

Evelyn had always been ambitious since childhood, striving to succeed in everything. Her only failure was her marriage to Dermot, in which she felt insulted.

She didn't mind that Dermot didn't fall for her, but not even deigning to meet her was too much for her, a person with high self-esteem.

She had thought that they would never meet after the divorce, but he came to her for the sake of saving his lover.

He was stepping on her pride!

However, she couldn't just leave the patient there, which made her feel even more frustrated.

"Mr. Doyle, don't be too happy yet. Although I've agreed to save Ms. Ackers, I have my conditions." She decided to let Dermot pay a hefty price, or else it would be too unfair to her.

"Please let me know." He was glad to hear that she had conditions because it would make things easier.

Evelyn thought for a moment and then said, "I'm setting up a laboratory and need funding and equipment."

"No problem. The Doyle family will provide that," he replied.

"Moris Hospital is lacking the latest surgical equipment," she added.

"The Doyle family will provide that too." He would provide that even if Evelyn hadn't mentioned it because he couldn't put Cassie at any risk.

He agreed on everything without hesitation. Evelyn glanced at him, feeling a bit upset. "Mr. Doyle, I'm surprised. You are willing to do anything for Ms. Ackers."

"Yes, because she is very important to me." He nodded. He had to take care of Cassie because that was the last wish of his lifesaver.

Evelyn thought, 'So, he is only heartless to me. Well, why do I care about it? After all, we have divorced. After this surgery, we will be complete strangers.'

"In that case, Mr. Doyle, why not donate a building? We're in dire need of a new inpatient building."

The conditions at Moris Hospital were quite poor. With limited beds in the inpatient department, many patients were unable to be admitted. Asking Dermot to donate a building was a way to benefit the medical community in Moris City.

Dermot's face darkened immediately. He gritted his teeth in annoyance. "Dr. Kyte, you do everything to benefit your hospital."

The equipment and funding alone would cost him a few million, and now she was asking him to donate a building, which would cost him more!

Evelyn didn't mind pissing him off. "Mr. Doyle, you seem reluctant. I'm not forcing you. However, about Ms. Ackers..."

"I'll donate!" Dermot said through clenched teeth.

Evelyn knew that he would agree. For Cassie, he would pay whatever he had to.

"Dr. Kyte, any other conditions? Just tell me all at once," he said with a steely face, his aura intimidating. It seemed that he was ready to strangle her if she named more conditions.

Evelyn knew when to stop. Moreover, even if Dermot refused to provide anything, she would still save the patient, so she was satisfied with what he had agreed to offer.

"That's all." She shook her head.

"Then the surgery..."

"Once the equipment is donated, we can start," she said.

"The equipment will be delivered tomorrow," he said, then looked at Evelyn earnestly. "Dr. Kyte, please save Cassie."
