Chapter 2 – Hard life
The early morning light filtered through the tattered curtains, casting a dim glow on the tiny bedroom shared by my younger brother, Ken, and me. As the cries of hunger echoed through the room, my eyes fluttered open, filled with both weariness and determination.
"Ken, hush," I whispered softly, my voice laced with exhaustion. "I'll find something for you to eat."
Ken, his young face contorted with hunger, clung to my worn-out shirt. "But I'm so hungry, Samantha. Why is there never enough food?"
My heart ached as I looked around our cramped living space. The bare walls, threadbare furniture, and empty cupboards were constant reminders of our impoverished existence. But I refused to let despair consume me.
With a heavy sigh, I gently pried myself away from Ken's grasp and made my way to the kitchen, my footsteps echoing on the worn linoleum floor. The sight that greeted me was all too familiar – an empty refrigerator and meager pantry shelves devoid of sustenance.
Tears welled up in my eyes as I watched my mother, worn and weary, toil over a basin of laundry. The smell of detergent hung in the air, mingling with the stench of our desperation.
"Mom," I called out, my voice a mix of concern and frustration. "We need food. Ken is starving. I thought you said we would have something today."
My mother, her face lined with exhaustion and worry, turned to face me. "I'm sorry, sweetheart. I'm doing what I can. These laundry jobs barely pay enough to cover our basic needs. I promise I'll try to find more work."
My voice trembled with pent-up emotion. "Mom, I know you're doing your best, but we can't keep living like this. I graduated with honors, I have a degree, but I can't find a stable job. I can't even provide for my own brother."
Tears streamed down my cheeks as I looked at Ken's emaciated form. I wiped my tears away, my voice filled with determination and desperation. "That's why I'm going to the Lewis Group today. I heard they have well-paying positions available. If I can land a job there, we won't have to suffer like this anymore."
My mother's weary eyes widened with a glimmer of hope. "Oh, Samantha, I pray that you're right. We need a miracle. We need stability."
I took a deep breath, my resolve hardening. "I won't give up, Mom. I'll do whatever it takes to provide for Ken and give him a better life. Today is the beginning of our journey out of poverty."
With newfound determination burning in my eyes, I grabbed my threadbare coat and rushed towards the door, ready to face the challenges that awaited me at the Lewis Group. The weight of our destitution pressed heavily on my shoulders, but I refused to let it crush my spirit.
As I stepped out into the world, hope and desperation intertwined in my heart. I knew the road ahead would be difficult, but my love for my family and my unyielding determination would propel me forward, pushing me to seize any opportunity that came my way, even if it meant encountering the short-tempered and ruthless boss I had heard about – Mr. Jake Lewis.
Little did I know that my journey would not only test my resilience and strength but would also intertwine my fate with a world beyond my wildest imagination, where the secrets of the supernatural awaited me, and where the path to stability would be paved with unexpected twists and the unraveling of my own deepest desires.
Ken, his small frame filled with innocence and confusion, looked up at our mother, Marcy, with wide eyes. "Mom, why don't we ask Dad for help? Doesn't he care about us?"
Marcy's face contorted with pain, her voice trembling as she struggled to find the right words. "Oh, Ken, your father... He has a new family now. He has moved on and forgotten about us."
Ken's brows furrowed in disbelief. "But Mom, how can he forget about us? We're his children. Doesn't he love us anymore?"
Tears welled up in Marcy's eyes as she knelt down to Ken's level, her voice filled with a mixture of sadness and bitterness. "I wish I had the answers, Ken. Sometimes people change, and their priorities shift. Your father made a choice, a choice that left us behind."
I stood nearby, my heart heavy with the weight of our shattered family. "But Mom, how could he abandon us like this? How could he turn his back on his own flesh and blood?"
Marcy, her voice tinged with resignation, spoke with a mixture of pain and acceptance. "Samantha, my dear, I've asked myself those questions countless times. But dwelling on it won't change our situation. We have to forge our own path, despite the hardships."
Ken's voice quivered as he clung to our mother's hand. "Does that mean we'll always struggle, Mom? Will we never have enough to eat or a place to call home?"
Marcy's eyes glistened with tears as she wrapped her arms around Ken, her voice filled with determination. "No, my sweet boy. I refuse to accept that. We may be facing hardships now, but I believe in the strength of our family. Samantha is out there fighting for a better future for us, and I will do everything in my power to support her. We will rise above this, together."
I looked at my family, my voice filled with determination. "You're right, Mom. We may not have our father's support, but we have each other. I will work tirelessly to provide for us, to create a stable and secure future. And one day, we will find the strength to forgive, but we will never forget the pain we endured."
Ken, his young face a mix of sadness and hope, squeezed our mother's hand tightly. "I believe in you, Samantha. I believe that you will make things better for us."
Marcy looked at us, her voice filled with fierce determination. "We will overcome this, my loves. We will find a way to build a life filled with love and abundance. Our family may be broken, but we are not defeated."
As the weight of our struggles lingered in the air, we stood together, united in our shared determination to rise above our circumstances. With hearts brimming with resilience and a glimmer of hope, we faced the challenges ahead, knowing that love and the unwavering bond of family would guide us through the darkest of times.
