Chapter 8

Sierra

Being in the car with Jayden Grey was breathtakingly painful. By that I mean I was forcing myself to breathe and relax. I was aware of how our knees touched. He didn’t speak much for the short car ride to the fast food joint.

Imagine my surprise when we pulled up at this fancy place. I narrowed my eyes, wondering if the super rich had a different definition for fast food and takeaway.

Jayden got out and stretched out his hand for me. I took it almost too quickly. Brian got out using the left door and walked in. So this was a regular spot for them. I realized he still had my hand and I coughed.

“After you,” he said and I smiled. His voice when he spoke was just so sexy.

I walked into this simple yet classy restaurant and followed Jayden to a reserved table. The hostess left us in the care of a waitress who smiled at us.

“Will you be having the usual Brian?” she asked. Brian nodded and she turned to me, handing me a menu.

“Welcome back Mr. Jay, want to try our special for the day?”

I swear I almost laughed out when I heard my boss being called so callously. I stifle my laughter turning it to a cough and focused on the menu. Honestly speaking, I knew nothing about Thai food and I noticed I was the only one who had been given the coffee-color menu.

“I’ll take it and I think Sierra will have the same,” I heard him. I was slightly grateful and surprised he could sense my indecisiveness at what to order. She took the orders and left.

“Thank you Mr. Jay,” I said, smiling at him insincerely.

“I prefer Mr. Grey,” he shot back at me with a very insincere smile on his face.

I fumbled my hands under the white tablecloth and looked at him, “How long will the orders take?”

Jayden made a show by looking at his watch then replied, “Usually fifteen minutes ah here are the drinks. I didn’t know if you consume alcohol so I played it safe. Besides, I make it a point not to take hard drinks in front of Brian.”

The waitress smiled and served the different drinks to the three. “A glass of Nom yen for Brian.” An iced bright pink drink in a tall glass was placed before him.

A deep blue liquid in a transparent glass teapot was put in front of me, “This is the nam dok anchan or butterfly pea tea.”

“A glass of nab thabthim for you sir,’ the waitress said, placing the final drink in front of Jayden.

I sipped at my drink, not sure of what to expect. I saw Jayden watching me as I took a tentative sip. To my surprise I liked it though I have never been a fan of tea.

We sipped our drinks in silence for a while. For me I was enjoying the drink. Brian had pulled out a tablet from his bag and was playing a game on it.

I sneaked a glance at Jayden and my heart almost melted when we locked eye contact. He gave me the smallest of smiles then looked away.

“Brian isn’t that drink super sweet?”

The boy looked up from his tablet and gave a slight nod, “The color makes it look sugary but it’s not. Want to try?”

I shook my head because I didn’t like sugary drinks and two I didn’t know how it would look taking my boss’s son’s drink.

The waitress came back and set the table but before I could comment, two food runners dropped our orders; plated.

“I thought it was takeaway,” I said looking at the steaming food in front of me. Jayden looked sheepish and I sighed internally. I took my first bite before I noticed they were both watching me keenly.

“Can a lady eat in peace,” I grumbled then put the food in my mouth. The burst of flavors in my mouth was intense but I liked it and I could not help but let out a little mew.

Both of them started laughing and dug in.

“That’s dad’s recipe you are eating,” Brian said, taking another bite.

I frowned wondering what that meant. “You own this place too? Why am I not surprised? But the staff here are very casual.”

“Yes I own it but only two people know, the head chef and the GM.” Jayden answered, leaning back on his chair. He had finished eating and was wiping his lips with the white cloth napkin

Though I shouldn’t be surprised. Earlier on in the day when I was free, I did an in-depth search on Jayden. What I found was mostly about his financial side of life. Very little was available about his personal life. Not even Brian was mentioned by name in the article.

I learnt that Jayden was a self-made billionaire in the city. He had inherited a little money from his grandparents and using both luck and skill had started his first company at the age of 18.

“Hello, earth to Sierra,” Jayden called out to me. I looked at him not realizing I had spaced out.

“Sorry my mind was...” I let that hang and smiled, “What were you saying?”

“I was just saying how beautiful you are.”

I whipped my head around to where Brian was sitting but his spot was empty. I blushed furiously and looked down, not daring to look at Jayden in his eyes. I heard a chair being pulled and was glad to hear Brian’s voice.

“Dad I am done, let us go home.”

The ride back was quiet. I was dropped off at my place before the car took off to drop Jayden and Brian home. I was glad that I did not have to cook anything. Dessert and my leftovers had been packed for me to carry.

When Jayden had told me I was beautiful, I felt very good but at the same time I was scared. No man had complimented me except for my ex fiancé. Jayden telling me that immediately made my mind switch over to Mark.

The betrayal was still fresh in my mind, of all people he had to cheat on me with Lisa. I wish it had been anyone else other than my friend. I only came to know about it by accident. I had gone to visit Lisa at her apartment and when she was in the shower, a series of texts popped up.

I had no intention of snooping around but when the images were pictures of a dick; one that I knew all too well because of a certain birthmark on the shaft. I clicked on the picture and I confirmed it. I read through the messages and found out their affair had been going on for more than two years.

I started seeing red at that moment and had Lisa been near me at that time I would have hurt her.

I walked out of the apartment and went to my place where I found Mark watching television. He casually greeted me then stopped sensing my mood.

I went to my room and started packing up my luggage but when he came to ask me what I was doing is where I snapped and lashed out at him.

I swear it felt good when my long nails tore at his face leaving three long lacerations like a cat had attacked him. I screamed at him letting him know that I knew about his affair with Lisa. He then froze like a deer in headlights.

It was my plan to move out without causing a scene but I changed my mind and told him to leave.

That was a few months ago and the pain was still fresh. Lisa had tried to reach me but I blocked them both from my life and I decided to move.

Now these feelings that were starting to develop whenever I was around Jayden were just confusing me and I didn’t know what to do.

I flopped into bed and let the tears flow down my face.
