Chapter 3

The silence between us is almost awkward, as I rewind the night before and Adam is too busy on the phone. I want to ask him about what happened yesterday. He understood me like no one else, as if he knew the feeling of being in crisis. I open my mouth and close it a few times, thinking if I should really do it.

"I don't mind answering, whatever it is," He continues staring at the screen.

"Yesterday, you knew exactly what to do..." He finally looks at me.

"I just deduced."

"You're lying."

"No, I'm not."

"You are. You won't make me believe that, Mr. Davis."

"Why can't you just call me Adam, Miss?" He goes back to his phone again, which bothers me.

"For the same reason you refer to me as Miss. Can you please look at me?" I raise my voice.

"Yes, Mia." he smiles faintly, doing as I ask.

"I had some panic attacks when Amy's mother died in the accident." He says after a while, the smile giving way to a distant look.

"My therapist always talked about breathing, and that's how I managed to control my attacks. They are different symptoms of anxiety, but similar, so I deduced it could work for you."

" You was being honest."

"Yeah, I was."

"I'm sorry for insisting."

"Don't apologize, after all, I owed you a secret back." He smiled again, and I followed suit.

The boarding call is announced, Adam nervously swinging his legs while trying to call his daughter again, who finally answers.

"Amy, please tell me you're coming."

"You need to board, I won't be able to make it in time. The main road in the city is closed due to an accident, we can't get out of here and I'm very far from the airport." I hear her say.

"Without you, we're not going anywhere."

"Dad, listen to me, you need to attend the opening. You always wanted a branch of the restaurant over there... The next flight is tomorrow early morning, I promise I will be there to have lunch with you, as we agreed."

"Dear..."

"Dad, trust me, you'll do great. Apologize to Mia and tell her to have fun for me tonight, she really needs to open up to the male sex. Love you, I'll call you later, and please keep your fingers crossed for me!"

My cheeks turn red instantly, abhorring Amy for completely exposing my failed love life. Why did she have to be so unfiltered?

Adam hangs up the phone and looks at me, perplexed, trying to find the right words.

"Traffic problems, then?" I am the first to speak.

"Yeah, traffic problems." He repeats in a hoarser voice, still fixed on me until the last announcement echoes and he turns to our luggage.

"We have to go."

The economy class was full, but Adam didn't seem to mind, even though he had enough money to always be in first class. My friend would probably regret convincing her father to buy the cheapest tickets when she realized the limited menu options, but that was my condition for going on this trip. We agreed that I would be responsible for the expenses, but I was far from being able to afford something more luxurious with the salary I received from the campus library, where I was interning.

As the plane takes off, there is hardly any space between me and Adam, as he decided to sit beside me. His eyes are glued to the laptop on his lap, so I decided it was time to continue my reading. I try to concentrate, but one page takes almost twenty minutes, with Adam so close and making annoying noise. I close the book and put on my headphones, convincing myself to focus only on the music.

While the beat plays, at some point, Adam's warm hand removes one of my headphones after putting the notebook aside.

"Are you nervous about my presence, Mia?" He touches my leg, which was swinging, holding it in place.

"N-no." I answer weakly, and he moves even closer to my face, brushing his thumb over my cheek.

"Then why are you breathing so hard?" He smiles in a mischievous way, squeezing my thigh.

I close my eyes, leaning back and holding back a moan. I wanted much more than that. I would like to feel his mouth on mine immediately.

"Adam…" It's all I can say.

"Tell me what you want, Mia." He slides from my cheek to my lips.

"Kiss me… please." I almost whisper, fixed on his gaze.

Without delay, he does what I ask for gently and sweetly. He asks for entrance with his tongue, and I give it, feeling his mint taste. Our tongues fit perfectly, fast and fiery movements in a sensual game. He bites my lower lip carefully before pulling away and smiling.

"Mia, we're about to land." I feel a whisper in my ear.

My body shivers and my eyes open back to reality. I had dreamt about my best friend's dad. Shit, at what point did my eyes get heavy? I notice his body under my head, I fell asleep on Adam's shoulder. My cheeks flush and I quickly get up, but taking care not to get too close to his mouth, although I can't take my eyes off it. Damn dream.

"Are you okay?" He looks at me curiously.

"Yes." I deflect, grabbing my books.

"There's a car waiting for us." He informs me and walks away to look for our luggage.

Luckily, Adam doesn't have time to notice how restless I am. He talks on the phone the whole way to the lodge, about his restaurant in our city, emphasizing how they should replace him. That place would probably be his biggest passion if it weren't for Amy.

"Please take my bags to the usual cottage and guide Mia to hers with her belongings." He tells the driver as he parks, putting his hand on the speaker.

"Is it okay if I come to your cottage later?" He turns to me.

I should deny it, it's too dangerous to be alone with Adam in a room. He may notice how my body reacts to every movement he makes, but in the end, I just look back at him and answer "Yes."
