Prologue
The ground felt unstable beneath my paws, and my lungs yearned for air. Every step I took in that dense forest was a challenge, with twisted branches and roots that seemed to want to bring me down. I felt like I was dancing on treacherous terrain.
Even I, who always took pleasure in declaring that I knew every meter of that territory, now looked stunned at the imposing trees surrounding me. The thick vegetation blocked the path ahead, making my escape even more difficult. Every broken branch emitted a loud crack as if the forest itself was warning me of my vulnerability.
"We can sense your desperation!" a howl sent shivers down the fur on my neck, echoing among the giant trees.
I looked around, searching for any sign of help, and that's when I noticed a stream running nearby. Without hesitation, I ran towards the stream, leaping over the slippery rocks lining its banks.
"What are we doing?" a melodic and frightened voice echoed as the breeze whispered through the leaves of the trees.
The cold water enveloped my paws, relieving the heat of the pursuit. I glanced back, seeing the wolves closing in, their eyes gleaming with predatory fury. They wanted to destroy me and thus destroy my father's kingdom.
"We've received clear orders," a harsher voice silenced their comrades. "I want him dead by sunrise."
Knowing I couldn't hide in the water forever, I gathered my strength and leaped to the opposite bank of the stream. Now in more open terrain, my senses sharpened to find an escape route. A majestic cliff rose before me, its imposing walls seemingly touching the sky. It would be a risky leap, but perhaps it was my only chance to escape. I took a deep breath, feeling the energy pulsating in my veins, and launched myself into the air.
While I was plummeting in freefall, an indescribable sensation of freedom and danger intertwined. The wind buzzed in my ears, and I could see the scenery unfolding below me. Adrenaline rushed through my blood, and I knew I was alive, fighting for my survival.
"ELDRIC!" A somber howl undulated behind me. "Stop running, boy. Let's talk." His sardonic laughter continued to pursue me, but now I was one step ahead, the steep descent giving me an advantage. The cliff was my strategy, a daring act to show that I wasn't easy prey.
"Luna, help me! Give me a way out..." I whispered as gravity pulled me down.
I remembered everything I was, and who I represented. I was part of this wild nature, with survival instincts flowing in my veins. The lineage coursing through my blood was powerful and unwavering. Luna's gentle voice infiltrated my bones, echoing among the cliff walls.
"As the future leader of the Lunar Roar nation, Eldric, your followers expect you to fight and embrace your inner wolf."
I looked back and saw that the six wolves were much closer than before. Their imposing presence filled the space between us, but I didn't falter. I knew I was ready to fight.
"For my pack and my kingdom, I choose to fight!" I murmured with determination, finding strength in my voice.
I positioned myself, waiting for the pursuing wolves to come closer so I could identify each one.
Amidst the dense nocturnal forest, where shadows danced among the tall trees, I stood tall with a firm posture. The full moon bathed the surroundings in its silvery light, casting a mysterious glow over the scene.
"I will hunt every one of you to hell, if necessary!" I shouted, bristling my fur to increase my size and convey my determination.
"You won't have that opportunity." I wasn't the first time I had seen that black wolf; he had recently infiltrated my kingdom. He claimed to be seeking refuge and shelter, but now I realized that his real interest was to overthrow my father from his position.
Curious and suspicious, I observed the wolves accompanying him, each with their confused and sorrowful gazes. I recognized some of them and even played with one when we were younger. Confusion was set in my mind, as it made no sense for them to hunt me now.
"Why are you doing this?" I questioned, slamming my paw forcefully on the ground, the sound echoing through the trees, and waiting for a plausible answer.
"Your father is weak! You are weak! The next Alpha will bring prosperity and decency to the Lunar Roar." I noticed some heads lowering, disapproving of the black wolf's words. "Don't expect mercy, we have no intention of letting you live." His laughter frightened me, and I took a small step back, feeling a shiver run down my spine.
At that moment, I felt insignificant. I always expected everyone to see in me what they saw in my father. I thought being his son was enough to grant me the status of Alpha, but I was mistaken. What they wanted was a display of strength, proof that I was worthy of the throne.
"You are so cowardly that you needed a pack to stop me," I tried to maintain my sarcasm, despite the anxiety engulfing me. "If you want to challenge me, here I am, waiting for any of you to try to stop me."
A gray wolf, with a coat as silver as the moon itself, ran towards me with bared teeth, his fierce expression reflected in the gleam of his eyes. However, I realized that he was smaller and weaker compared to the others. With an agile movement, I freed myself from him and attacked his jugular, making his blood flow and stain the ground within seconds.
"Is this all you have for me?" My confidence was being restored, and my voice echoed with a mixture of challenge and superiority. "I thought you desired my place on the throne." The black wolf growled in irritation, its eyes shining with hatred, while two more wolves advanced toward me.
This time, the battle was more difficult. Sharp claws scratched the ground, teeth gnashed, and howls echoed through the forest. As I fought to disentangle myself from the attacks, I ended up wounded. One of my adversaries struck my hind leg, yours teeth penetrating deep into my flesh, causing me to howl in pain and defiance simultaneously.
Their action triggered an adrenaline rush within me, and I tore their throats apart, mixing my blood with theirs.
"Go, kill him," commanded the black wolf, pointing to yours last remaining allies. I was surprised to discover their identities.
Both seemed reluctant as if they didn't want to be there, but something in their gazes told me that there was more at stake.
"I don't understand..." I murmured, and the she-wolf looked at me with compassion.
"I deeply regret this," she bowed before me. "But he has what I hold most dear." Those were her final words.
Her husband, a formidable opponent, was the first to try and stop me. Though I knew he was stronger than me, I realized he intended to buy me time.
The black wolf lunged toward the she-wolf, forcing her to come closer to me, and we engaged in a more intense battle than before. Our gazes met constantly, and desperation was evident in their expressions.
In a moment of distraction, I hurled the she-wolf against the wall of rocks behind us, while her husband momentarily lost track of me, allowing me to attack his neck.
The she-wolf howled desperately, disoriented by the impact. I distanced myself from the remains of her husband and approached her slowly.
"Why did they do this?" I asked, gazing deep into her eyes. "You had everything!" I shouted in her ear.
"Protect her for me, Eldric. I know I don't deserve your mercy, but my baby is innocent. Protect her!"
"I swear..." I took a deep breath, watching the black wolf flee the scene. "I swear I will hunt down and end any Evergreen that crosses my path." I snapped her neck instantly, without giving her a chance to convince me otherwise.
Exhausted, I let my body collapse onto the ground. My mind teemed with the idea of epic revenge against all who dared oppose my kingdom.
