Chapter 2
Edward looked slightly puzzled, retracting his hand as he spoke. “How can you tell I am what you call a monster?”
“I can tell that you don’t breathe!” I screamed, crawling back on the ground.
“interesting.” Another vampire smiled, his name Yornie.
The third creature shook his head in amazement, his crystal blue eyes as fake as his life. Wallen was his name. “But how can she possibly tell?”
“I do not know.” Edward mumbled before turning towards me, his tone light and seemingly caring. Though I could tell it was fake. “We aren’t going to hurt you Ariel.”
“Don’t lie to me, you have come here to kill me!” I stammered, using the wall to stand. “So go ahead, your kind have taken everything from me!”
“She’s certainly brave.” Wallen smiled, taking a step towards me, his bleached blonde hair falling over his shoulders. “Or stupid. I can’t decide which.”
“Stay back!” I commanded, quickly pulling a gun from the ‘Good Cop’s' holster and pointing it towards the vampires, my hands shaking violently.
“Ariel, I would advise you to put the gun down. Someone could get hurt.” Yornie growled, baring his fangs.
Panic ripped through my chest as I saw them, the teeth that would puncture my skin, allowing them to drain me dry. Closing my eyes for a brief moment I pulled the trigger, a echoing shot ringing out, the bullet soaring through the air and into Wallen's chest; knocking him into the ground. I moved the gun and pointed it at Edward who’s hands were raised high, his eyes wide.
Though I knew he wasn’t afraid, I could tell it was all a show to make me feel better, like I had the upper hand. But that wasn’t the case and I lost concentration for a split moment, that was all they needed. With a speed that I had witnessed when my parents had been murdered, Yornie appeared behind me, forcing me to release the gun as I cried out, his arms wrapping around my waist. He lifted me from the ground and shook me once, the gun falling into the ground. Edward quickly taking it from where it had fell and giving it back to the human cop, who nodded towards the undead man in appreciation.
“let go of me!” I sobbed, knowing that this was the end for me, I would die along with everyone I loved. I would meet them in heaven this day.
“I will release you when I am certain that you have calmed down.” Yornie stated, his grip on me tightening.
I watched in horror as Wallen stood from where he had fallen, the bullet wound nowhere to be seen. He smiled down at me, pushing his hair to the side as he spoke. “You need to listen to us, if we were here to kill you, we would have done it already.”
I panted for breath, realising that what he said was true. Vampires didn’t play with their food much, at least not as much as this, they loved the kill too much. My shoulders sagged slightly as I tried to relax in Yornie's arms, knowing that I had to be calm. I couldn’t allow myself to have another outburst like that, otherwise I might just find myself entering the afterlife anyway.
“If you aren’t here to kill me ... Then what do you want?” I whispered, dreading the answer.
“We want to place you into protective custody, your life is in danger.” Edward said slowly, his mystic brown eyes radiating truth.
“Why? Why does your kind want to kill me?” I asked after a long pause, hoping that they would have an answer. “Why did they go after my parents, my sister?”
“It is not all of our race that wants to kill you, it is a different faction within our people that call themselves the chosen. They have found something within your family line that they do not like.” Wallen explained, brushing off the dust that now clung to his suit.
I thought for a moment before I spoke, confusion littering my tone. “What did they find?”
The vampires turned to glance at each other before anyone spoke, as though they were deciding whether to tell me or not. Yornie placed me onto the ground gently, his tone light with humour; “Now you must keep an open mind here. We need to know that you won’t freak out and shoot one of us again.”
“Ok.” I whispered, adjusting my school skirt as I spoke.
I was more nervous than I had ever been as the men pulled out a file from Edward's briefcase, not knowing what to expect. My mind racing over the possibilities, what could it possibly be? Was I from some sort of family where are blood is better? Was I a vampire? Was my mother or father undead?
Edward placed the file onto the metal table, inviting me forward with his hand as he spoke. “It took us a while to figure this out, so bare with the scribbles of information. Some If It is hard to read.”
I nodded, nervously taking a seat on one of the hard chairs. Was I ready to learn why my family was murdered? Could I really handle this?
“Did you know that you originated from Scotland?” Yornie asked me, taking the seat beside me as I stared down at the closed file, my name in bold letters across the front.
I shook my head, “No, I don’t know anything about my family, I was seven when my parents were killed and my sister was eleven. Our parents didn’t talk about it much, and when they did ... the information was somehow guarded, like pieces were left out.”
Wallen bobbed his head, “We thought as much, you are still a young girl. If I were your parents I would try and keep it from you as long as I could also.”
“What do you mean? What is the big secret?” I questioned them, my heart once again racing. Why weren’t they just telling me? What could be so bad that they had to be so cryptic?
