Chapter 4

“Now we really must go, I don’t know how much time we have before the chosen realise where you are. We need to get you to a safe place.” Wallen proclaimed, clearing his throat.

“Ok.” I replied, rising from my seat as I nervously rubbed my sweaty hands on my skirt. Fearful of the sudden turn in the my life. What was I getting myself into?

“you will be alright, just follow us.” Wallen said sweetly, taking my hand in his.

I said nothing as I allowed the vampires to lead me from the interrogation room, their pace fast and almost desperate. Were they really that concerned for my safety? Or was it simply their job? They led me through the precinct in silence, their eyes roaming over everyone they saw, ensuring that they weren’t the chosen. I squeezed Wallen’s hand as we walked, noticing instantly when four vampires walked in through the stations front door ... The very same creatures that killed my sister the night before.

Panic ripped through my chest as I locked eyes with Yornie, my steps slowing as I panted for breath. He placed a hand on my shoulder and turned towards the others, Wallen's grasp on my hand tightening. They already knew who the creatures were, and we were too late. The chosen were here.

“Don’t fret, we have a plan.” Wallen whispered, carefully leading me to a small desk. “wait here.”

I nodded mutely, taking a seat at one of the two metal chairs as I watched my protectors split up, each one moving with purpose. I could tell what they were doing after a few painfully long minutes, the chosen closing in on my position. Yornie, Wallen and Edward were flanking the other creatures, ensuring that their way out of the station was impossible as cops moved to block both the main entrance and the side.

The chosen didn’t seem to notice any of this as their eyes dropped onto my shaking form, a smile etched on each of their murderous faces as they closed in around me. My heart thumped in reckless motions against my chest as one of them knelt in front of me, his red eyes the true shade of a vampire. He didn’t even take the time to use fake contact lenses, that proved that they didn’t care at all about mankind finding out that they were real. That vampires roamed our cities in force, killing whoever they pleased.

“Hello Ariel.” The knelt creature greeted me as my eyes darted around in panic, his smile triumphant.

“What do you want?” I whispered back, already knowing the answer.

“Your life.” He replied quickly, rising back to his feet as he forced me to stand.

I had no inkling of what to do as he wrapped his hand around my throat, lifting me from the ground whilst I squirmed, attempting to free myself from his deadly grasp. I screamed at the top of my lungs, the entire precinct snapping their heads towards me and the vampire who was slowly crushing my neck in his bulky hand. Not knowing what else to do I lashed out with my right leg, crashing it into his knee. He growled, dropping me back into the chair as he collapsed onto one knee, his eyes alright with rage. Did he really expect me to just let him kill me? No way.

I jumped back when he reached out for me again, climbing over the desk as I searched around for Yornie and the others, but they were no where to be seen as I rushed towards one of the cops, quickly taking his gun form his holster. I spun around just in time to see the four creatures closing in around me, blocking any chance I had of escaping.

I knew that the bullets in the gun wouldn’t kill them, and they knew that also, but from Wallen's reaction, I knew that it was painful to be shot. It might just give me the time that I need.

The vampire that I had kicked stopped forward, his tone dangerously low. “Put the gun down and I will make your death quick.”

“No.” I responded nervously, pulling the trigger as I clenched my eyes shut, praying that he would die. I quickly imagined his body being torn apart, his limbs scattered across the police station.

The shot rang out, filling the air with a gut-wrenching scream that echoed through the precinct, yet it was not from me pulling the trigger. I opened my eyes slowly to find the enemy in pieces on the ground, blood coating the floor as I gasped. The bullet couldn’t have done that, so what did? I took a step back, dropping the gun in shock, the other vampires began to panic, none of them knowing what had happened to their friend. My mind raced over the possibilities as I took another step back away from the blood thirsty creatures.

“I would suggest that the three of you leave this precinct before the same happens to you.” Yornie growled, appearing beside me as I jumped, recoiling away from him. Had he torn the other vampire apart?

The chosen vampires nodded, slowly backing away from me and Yornie. Wallen and Edward nowhere to be seen. I turned towards the vampire who stood beside me, knowing deep within my mind that he would not harm me, though that did not stop my chest from heaving as I fought for breath. Terrified that I would end up like the pile of blood and guts on the floor, my limbs torn from me as I begged for mercy. My heart raced and panic overwhelmed my mind, irrational thoughts consuming me. Would Yornie kill me next? How had the other vampires not seen him? Was he faster than the others? Stronger?
