Chapter 5

Dani -

Marisala walked in with two cupcakes and I squealed.

‘I think I can find her!!’

She collapsed beside me on the bed, falling on her back.

Marisala: ‘Dani, even if you do, it was one night. You don't need to get all worked up.’

She handed me a cupcake.

‘It was a good night though. I'm not saying I want to propose.’

Marisala: ‘Dani, I'm serious.’

‘I hook up with people all the time and you never get like this. What's up?’

Marisala: ‘You haven't been with anyone more than two weeks. They come onto you, you either let them take you out a few times or blew them off. Dani, you had that look on your face watching her the whole damn night. I was just waiting to see you make a move.’

‘So I'm not allowed to actually like someone?’

Marisala: ‘I'm being an annoying, protective best friend. I want you happy, but I want you to be ok too. Just, if y'all start hanging out, let me meet her? Threaten her nicely about hurting you?’

‘No threats. But I'll be ok. I promise.’

I finished my cupcake and tried the watch.

‘Please have your number. Please have your number.’

I mumbled trying to figure out how to work the watch.

Marisala took it from me and handed it back with a number on the screen.

Marisala: ‘You're welcome.’

She nudged me and left the room.

I plugged the number into my phone.

‘-Khloe?’

It felt like it took forever for a reply to come, but the time stamp said it was only a minute.

*‘Yes? Who is this?

-We woke up topless together. If you still need more hints you'll be breaking my heart.

Dani? How'd you get my number?’*

I snapped a pic of her watch.

*‘Dammit. I was looking for that.

-I'd be happy to have your screen fixed, or get you a new one. You have to let me take you to dinner though.

I'm sorry, but I fly home tomorrow. I'm out here visiting.’*

I felt like I was punched in the stomach.

*‘-So....chance of you letting me see you before you go?

I really enjoyed last night Dani. I don't think I can explain how much, but I don't think that's a good idea.

-I won't push, but I would be lying to say I am not really disappointed. Is there anything I could do to change your mind?

You don't even know me.

-I'd like to change that. Did I do something wrong? I thought we got along really well.

We did, I really liked getting to hang out with you. It's not that, I promise.

-Then just let me take you to dinner. No funny business.

I don't know if I can, like I said, I'm visiting.

-Check and let me know?’*

The next ten minutes nearly drove me crazy.

Waiting.

*‘I can do dinner, but can't be out late. Like I said, I have a flight tomorrow.

-Where should I pick you up?

I'll come to the house. I can get there around 6.

-Any allergies or food you don't like?

No, I can eat almost anything. But if I'm going out tonight, I need to go for now. Text you later?

-Of course. Looking forward to it.’*
