Chapter 5 My Husband Wanted Me DEAD
Regina’s POV
An escaped slave?
I couldn’t believe my ears.
I wasn’t a slave. I was Nigel’s wife!
And why did Miss Angel issue my search order anyway? Did Nigel tell her that I left? Did he want me captured?
But I hadn’t done anything wrong. I did sneak out of my house, but I was meeting my brother. I would come home tomorrow.
Why did they over-react like this?
I didn’t dare to breath too loudly nor move around my body. I was afraid that they would notice me here.
The group of guards finished with their questioning and moved down the road to continue with their search. I waited in the bush for them to go away and finally came out.
This whole thing is so confusing. But I was sure that there was some sort of misunderstanding in this.
My top priority now is to meet with my brother and to get the money. And after that, I would explain everything to Nigel. Hopefully he would understand.
Those guards were everywhere. So I couldn’t take the main road. Now the only way left to go is to travel across the forest, which was a long detour and could be potentially dangerous during the night. But I should be able to make it across the forest by dusk, so I should be alright.
I checked my direction for the one last time and started heading towards the south.
Yet soon I realized that I was harder to travel in the forest than I had expected.
To begin with, all the woods looked the same. I walked for 1 hour and started to feel like that I was traveling in circle. And there was absolutely no signal in the wilderness. So I couldn’t check the map neither.
I thought I was heading towards the south.
But the truth was I was lost.
Traveling in the forest alone got me thinking about my brother Gray again. He was a strong werewolf and a great hunter.
When we were little, he would take me to hunt in the mountains alone. He could always tell the direction by the rings of the trees, the way moss grows on the ground or the flow of streams. He was amazing. He knew everything.
Gray wanted to teach me those stuffs, because he believed that as Alpha’s kid I needed to know these stuffs.
But I never listened.
I was too busy having fun back then. I was either chasing butterflies or picking wildflowers to make a corolla for him.
“I passed every exam in the Academy. Please, Gray, just let me have fun now.” I used to say these to him.
Gray couldn’t keep a poker face with me and force me to learn. In the end, he could only sigh helplessly and rub my hair smiling:
“It was OK if you aren’t interested in these things. You will always have me by your side, keeping you safe.”
None of us knew at that point that I would leave him one day in the future.
Now I regretted not listening to him when I had a chance.
A sore feeling rose up in me every time I thought of Gray. Ever since I left him, it felt like a part of me was dead inside. Even being with Nigel couldn’t make me completely happy again.
I guessed it was the magical part of having a brother. We were always connected emotionally no matter how far away we were from one another.
And I was about to see him very soon now.
Plucking myself up, I decided to climb up to a tree and tried to figure out the direction.
I picked the highest tree in this area and climbed my way up.
The sun was setting on the horizon when I reached top. I didn’t have much time left. But luckily, I could already see the edge of the forest. It wouldn’t take long for me to reach the borderline.
I felt my heartrate quickening and my mouth turned dry.
Gray…Wait for me.
I was almost there.
I was about to climb down the tree when I heard a series of noise down below. Keeping myself perfectly still on the branches, I looked down and found a group of people approaching me from the distance.
To my shock, it was Nigel, Angel and their guards.
How did they find me here anyway?
“Still not yet?” I heard Miss Angel snapped, “I thought you could trace her by her scent! How fast can that bitch run?!”
“Soon, very soon.” Nigel said to her with an ingratiating voice. “Her scent has got very strong here. I can tell that she isn’t very far away.”
“Spread out and search for her!” Angel cried and her guards spread out.
She and Nigel continued to talk underneath the tree.
“We need to find her, Nigel. Officer Gavin made it clear that he wanted that bitch!” Angel said with an anxious voice, “If he doesn’t get what he wants, he won’t give you that ambassador job. Then you don’t have a decent identity to meet with my father. And everything falls apart!”
“I know…Just calm down babe—”
“How can I calm down!” Angel shrieked, “You should have fucking locked her in a fucking room after last night! You should tie her up and toss her onto Officer Gavin’s bed. How can you let her run away?!”
“I didn’t have a choice…Officer Gavin said he didn’t want to force himself upon her. He wanted her to submit to him willingly.”
“That twisted bastard!” Angel cursed, “I don’t care. When we get her, I want you to spread her legs and hold them for Officer Gavin if needed. You hear me?”
“Of course, darling.”
From my point of view, I could see Nigel smiling flattering at Miss Angel. I suddenly got a very nausea feeling like I was about to puke.
Was this the same Nigel that I fell in love with?
He was so handsome and so attractive back in school. He was a walking magnet. Every girl liked him in the Academy.
But when did he become this ass-kissing, shameless clown who was even willing to sacrifice his own wife for his career?
I closed my eyes and tears streamed down my cheek.
I could hardly recognize him anymore.
Just then, I heard Angel asked Nigel, “Supposed that we can get her to Officer Gavin, how should we do afterwards?”
“I will divorce her and marry you instead, like we have discussed.”
I bit my lip so hardly that there was blood in my mouth.
“No, I meant—how should we deal with her!” Angel pursued, “We can’t let her stay in this pack. She will tell everyone how you gave you to Officer Gavin and abandoned her afterwards.”
“Then we’ll ask your father to expel her.”
“But that won’t stop her from talking! As long as she is alive, she WILL tell somebody!”
A deadly silence fell upon us.
I couldn’t believe what I just heard.
Was Angel…Was her seriously suggesting that—
Then I heard Nigel’s deep voice again, which was filled with viciousness:
“If it can make you feel safe…I will kill Regina myself.”
“Really?” Angel sounds pleased, “Even though she was once your wife?”
“I NEVER wanted to marry her in the first place. She begged me and forced me into this. It disgusted me every time I touched her! Truth to be told, I wanted her dead for a long time already!”
NO.
Tears blurred my eyes.
NO. That wasn’t the truth!
I remembered how Nigel got on his one knee and proposed me in front of all of our classmates. I remembered how he used to hold my hands and say that he would cherish me forever.
I loved him. But I never forced him to marry me.
It was he who changed his heart!
A strong wave of emotions washed over me, causing my body to tremble. The branch underneath my feet shook and a leaf fell.
It fell directly on Angel’s head.
Nigel noticed that falling leaf and he casually looked up—
Then our eyes met in the air.
“Y—You—”
He widened his eyes at me and cried out loudly the next second, “She is here—Regina is here!”
“GRAB HER!”
Yelling, shouting and wolf howls filled my ears as I jumped down from the tree. It was goddamn high. But I shifted into my wolf in the midair and landed on the ground elegantly.
Somebody jumped at me waving a knife, but I dodged.
Then I started running, as fast as possible to the south, and threw everything behind my back.
My paws barely touched the ground as I ran. I was basically flying. I could hear my wolf purred excitedly because I hadn’t let her run this freely for a very long time.
But those guards still caught up with me gradually from behind.
I was fast among she-wolves.
But there was still no way I could beat mature werewolves.
“REGINA—”
Nigel shouted behind my back.
“Regina! Stop running and come back! There’s a misunderstanding! Let me explain!”
No…Liar.
I was done listening to him.
I wanted to run back to my brother Gray.
Faster. Faster. I kept urging my wolf.
And gradually I could see the forest opening up in front of me. And I could almost see a group of people gathered by the borderline in the distance.
There was a very familiar figure.
It seemed like Gray—
“AHHH—”
A gun shot came behind me, followed by sharp pain that came from my leg and caused me to lurch forward and fell.
I dropped down on the ground, curling myself up in pain. Tears blurred my eyes.
I was so close…Why…
“I got her!”
I heard a guard yelling excitedly. He rushed forward and grabbed me by my hair. Yet his body froze the next second.
“Hold on a second…” he murmured in disbelief, “Who was that—”
“No way…It’s Ever Moon Pack! What are they doing here by the border?!”
“God they are coming at us—RUN—”
The grip on my hair loosened. And I dropped back down on the ground. I vaguely hear furious wolf howls, the sound of fighting, and desperate cries.
But I couldn’t focus.
My leg was still bleeding. And I felt so cold…
Somebody helped me…Please…
Then a pair of large hands picked me up gently. His arms were so warm around me.
A shaky kiss was planted on my forehead.
I struggled to look up and met with a pair of emerald, green eyes.
It was him.
My brother, Gray.
