Chapter 5

Clyde's pov

Try as much as I might, a part of me had a soft spot for her.

"Damn you" I yelled

Turning to Brandon, I said,

"Let's go hunting"

"You didn't need to be here, you know"

"I can do the hunting quite alone" I can quite well go hunting on my own.

It's good to have a break from London.

"I mean, look at the two of us. A vampire and a human, friends"

"You ever try to make that reference again and I would be using you for sport" I answered walking out towards the green area, the most important reason why I had bought this place.

"What's going on?"

"It's complex."

"Isn't it always with you?" He asked

"What the...?" He yelled as I sped ahead, reaching for a deer, and draining it of its blood.

"You have blood on your face. Clyde. I think you're wise to keep your distance from the witch."

"Yes. But the problem is, she has something that I need but I can't point it out yet. And I don't know why but I feel like she's in danger like she needs me"

"Think about what's happened in the past to women, you've craved. Eve, Cate..." He started before I interrupted him

"I wish I'd never told you."

"But you did because you wanted me to be your conscience."

"After Cate, I swore to myself that I would never get involved with another warmblood again and you know that!"

"But, Matt, you've never talked about another woman the way you do about Carissa. I'm just trying to protect you."

"I'll try to take your advice. Don't try." I admonished

"Do. If you hurt her, you'll never forgive

yourself and I couldn't bear it. Don't go back to France until you're sure you can control yourself around Carissa." He advised.

Carissa's pov

Sarah, the recent witch friend I had made earlier had begged for me to see a man she claimed would help me use my powers more appropriately.

I relayed my fears to her.

"I want to be normal," I said

"You couldn't be normal if you tried. It's so typical something like this would happen to you."

"What shall I do, Sarah?" I asked

"Carry on with your life." She advised

"Yeah, but that's nearly impossible with all these...creatures and the restaurant."

"Not the vampire that was following you before?" She asked

"No. He seems to have given up on me."

"Oh, that's our relief at least."

"I don't know. There is something about him. He...He seemed to know more about me than anyone else. I should have asked him about it. Instead, I...I told him to leave me alone." I admitted, almost regretting it

"You're quite right, too."

"Have you ever talked to them?"

"No."

"So you don't know what they're like?" I asked

"And you do, after one conversation?" She retorted

"He didn't seem to be as prejudiced against us as we are against them.

"I gotta go. I have a meeting to attend"

"Thank you. Sorry to burden you with this." And she left.

After the usual greetings and all, he began his talk about the need for power and taking out the vampires.

"Vampires have used their brute power and longevity to gain far too much control, but if we created them...then we could un-create them." He finished

"I won't have any part of that. I don't want to have anything to do with it. I want to lead a normal life. I want to be normal." I objected

"But you didn't tell me a vampire's been following you."

"How do you know that?" I questioned

"Can't you see the danger you're in?"

"I can take care of myself."

"Laudable, but naive. The fact that vampires are now involved makes this so much more urgent."

"I'm not going to bring up my powers for you."

"Why not?"

"Because I don't happen to like the idea of un-creating other species."

"They would do the same to us if they could."

"If I've made up my mind I don't change it."

"Carissa. Think about what you're doing. You must be true to your blood and your heritage. Don't make me force you

to call out your powers. Carissa. Don't walk away! You can't escape me that easily. I can be with you wherever you are. I need your power. We need your power." He continued even as I was leaving

"Get out of my head!" I screamed

I had to look for that vampire, perhaps he can help me.

Clyde's pov

(Paris, France)

"You were right... about creatures coming to look for me. I don't know...I don't know who he was." Marissa had started when she came, I just knew that she would need me and here she was. Glad I didn't listen to Brandon.

"Try to calm down. Your adrenaline is very high." I advised

"You can smell my adrenaline?"

"Course I can."

"Thank you." She said

"Why did you come to me? The last time I saw you, you said you never wanted to see me again." I was curious

"I have no one else to talk to." She shook her head sadly

"You must have friends."

"None I can trust. It was a mistake to come here. I'm sorry I disturbed you." She said and made for the exit before I stopped her

"Why does he want your power?"

"He says mine is ancient power, powerful enough to create"

"Is that what you think it is?" I asked

"He believes that witches with my power created everything and everyone. I'm not of that opinion." She replied

"Does he know that you don't use your powers?"

"Yes. He wants me to try and learn so I could get it out for him"

"Will you?"

"I don't want him to have it." She responded.

Picking up a letter lying on the table, she began to read,

"Dear sir...Your letter of 15th October

has reached me at last."

"Did you know Leonardo da Vinci?" She asked, wide-eyed

"Yes. I met him on several occasions particularly when he was doing his last painting. I was desperate to understand his works. You see, I'd already heard rumors, whisperings about a painting...

hidden from human eyes, a masterpiece. That man had an uncanny ability to paint bizarre works. And I found and saw every one of them."

"Mmm. How old are you?" She asked

"I'm older than I look," I admitted

"Three hundred years?"

"Mmm," I responded smiling, not wanting to answer her

"Five hundred years? Did you know Hitler? Survive the World War?"

"Which of the World War?" I asked and she gasped, shocked.

I'd like to show you some of my work. The work I've been doing recently. I won't harm you. You have my word." I said

"Alright." She agreed

"Put this on. You're cold." I said helping her with a jacket.

"How do you know that?" She inquired

"Adrenalin causes a rise in metabolic heat production. Your adrenalin has dropped and so has your heart rate."

"You can hear my heart?" She asked too many questions for a witch

"Yes. All the time." I admitted.
