Chapter 17

His grandfather scolded him over the phone, harshly. After hanging up, Grandfather looked at me with a cheerful smile.

"Grace, don't worry. If that brat dares to bully you, Grandfather will break his legs."

Can I say that I came here to avoid Kenneth? Then, the next day, I was playing chess with Grandfather. What moves can I make? I’m just amusing the old man. I was about to lose miserably again –

"Grandfather, can I take back my move?" I weakly asked.

Grandfather held onto my piece, not letting me take it back, "How can you do that? There's no medicine for regrets in life."

I sighed in my heart, thinking that Grandfather was right.

"Why did Kenneth come back?" I stared at him in surprise.

Grandfather turned his head to look. Taking this opportunity, I quickly switched the pieces within a second. By the time Grandfather realized I was tricking him, I had already changed the game strategy.

"Where is he?" Grandfather didn't see anyone and asked me.

"Ah, maybe I missed him too much and my eyes are playing tricks on me." I stuck out my tongue, pretending to be lovesick.

"I remember... just now..." Grandfather adjusted his reading glasses and looked at the chessboard in disbelief, "The game wasn't like this just now, this white piece was not here, and this black piece wasn't here either, did I remember wrong?"

"Maybe... maybe you remembered wrong."

I chuckled in my heart.

"Ah, getting old, getting confused. It's your turn, continue."

"Okay, Grandfather." I happily placed a white piece down.

"Come here." A voice sounded above my head.

I was shocked. Kenneth?!

As I raised my head, I saw him standing behind me in a suit. It seemed like he had just returned from a business trip and didn't even have time to change his clothes. It had been so long since I last saw him, I was actually captivated by his handsome appearance, and my heart skipped a beat.

"I'm playing chess." I pretended to be nonchalant.

"Aren't you the one who said you missed me?" He lowered his eyes, staring at me with an enigmatic expression. "Come here."

"You brat! "Why are you being so aggressive? Making demands as soon as you come back?"

Grandpa was the first to refuse, glaring at Kenneth.

"Old man, you know this is my wife," Kenneth said, acting tough and unabashed, bending down to hold my hand and preparing to leave.

"Grandpa, he must have missed me too much. I'll come back later and play chess with you," I smiled to ease the awkwardness.

Grandpa smiled satisfactorily when he heard that. Kenneth pulled me along the way and didn't let go of my hand until we reached a corner of the garden.

"How dare you replace my grandfather in chess?"

"I... I don't know how to play chess. I am only here to please your grandfather."

He scoffed, "You spare no effort in pleasing your elders."

"It's nothing. I'll go ahead now." I didn't give him a friendly face.

Just as I was about to leave, he grabbed my hand. He pulled me towards him and whispered,

"You said you missed me. Calling my grandfather from far away just to have you by my side. I won't let you take advantage of me without saying anything."

"In broad daylight, what do you want?" I struggled to step back.

But he followed me and cornered me under a rose tree. The thorns on my back were hurting, and I had nowhere to retreat.

"You should ask yourself what you want to do to me?"

He wrapped his arm around my waist, protecting my back from the thorns, with a wicked smile on his face.

"I don't want to do anything." I rejected him while drooling.

My heart was racing at such close proximity.

"The night you pressured me, you weren't this cold-hearted." He laughed softly.

"You!" I found myself at a loss for words, too nervous to speak. "Someone!"
