Chapter 3
That day, Simon exploded in rage.
He snatched the glass and smashed it directly onto me, saying, "What do you think you are? You want to compare yourself to her?"
"She's not as despicable as you. She wouldn't sell herself for three-hundred-thousand dollars."
I blinked my sore eyes and said, "Alright, I'll drink it then."
The lives of the poor are worthless, let alone their dignity.
I indeed received three-hundred-thousand dollars from him.
It was what I deserved.
Before Cecilia went abroad, she was already a popular A-list celebrity.
Upon returning with a gleaming aura, she received numerous film offers.
She called and said that she had just returned to the country and needed a competent assistant.
"I think that Diana by your side is good; it seems like she knows how to serve people."
Simon remained silent for two seconds. She chuckled, "What? Are you reluctant?"
"No," Simon said calmly, "Since you need her, then I'll let her go."
I followed Cecilia to the film set.
During a break, the second female lead, Jasmine Ortiz, came over and struck up a conversation, "Cecilia, your assistant looks quite similar to you."
"It's just that her eyes aren't quite the same. She has a beauty mark, making her look even more charming than you," Jasmine was originally cast as the female lead for this film, but unfortunately, Cecilia interrupted and directly took her role.
She felt unsettled in her heart.
She intentionally said this to taunt Cecilia.
As expected, Cecilia's expression changed, and her disdain towards me was hardly concealed in her gaze.
After finishing work in the afternoon, she said that she lost her ring.
"It must have gotten lost when we were filming by the lake; it must have fallen into the water." Her gaze shifted, eventually landing on me, "Diana, jump into the lake and help me find it."
The artificial lake's water level was not high, just reaching my waist.
I wadded into the water, bending down, searching the muddy riverbed bit by bit.
The evening sun on the horizon resembled blood.
With the arrival of night, the light gradually dimmed.
I knew Cecilia was deliberately making things difficult, and everyone on the shore watched silently.
No one would stand up for an unknown assistant.
My fingers wrinkled and turned pale from the cold lake water. When I picked something up, the mud fell off from it.
Suddenly, I thought of my time in college.
I immersed myself in the laboratory, working on my graduation project.
I had to keep my hands dry and clean, picking up test tubes, culture dishes, and slides, observing results and recording data.
My senior and mentor would always say that I was a talented student and would go far in this field.
But an ordinary person's life couldn't withstand any setbacks.
Just a small obstacle could destroy everything.
Even if it was just a tiny bit of adversity, it can suffocate.
Three years had passed, but it felt like a distant memory from another lifetime.
Finally, when the sky was completely dark, the stylist spoke up, "Cecilia, I found your ring, it was on the table in the dressing room."
"Maybe I accidentally left it there," Cecilia replied, taking the ring and casually tossing it into her Hermes bag.
"Come on, Diana, tidy yourself up. Don't let others misunderstand that I've mistreated you," she added.
