Chapter 5

Tragedy's POV

The Alpha's gaze bores into me, dissecting me with a calculating intensity.

His voice was deep and commanding as he spoke, every word laced with authority. "You claim to be a lost wolf seeking refuge," he stated, his voice resonating within the confines of the cell. "But I must say, I have my doubts."

Fear clenched my heart, but I summoned the small courage to meet his gaze again, even as my body trembled with trepidation.

"Please, Alpha," I pleaded, my voice wavering. "I'm not a spy. I'm just a wolf who has nowhere else to go. I-I meant no harm! I boarded a train and it brought me here." I sniffle, praying that the man would believe me.

A cold smile tugged at the corners of his lips, devoid of warmth or compassion.

"Words mean nothing to me," he stated, his voice dripping with skepticism. "Actions will determine your fate."

My heart sank further, the weight of his words crushing my spirits. The Alpha gestured to his henchmen, who unlocked the cell door with a resounding clank. They approached me with a firm grip, hauling me up to my feet.

I stumbled forward, my legs weak and numb from the tight confinement and my feet still cut and torn from the previous day.

"You will be put under strict observation," The Alpha commands, his tone brooking no argument.

"We will determine the truth of your claims and in the meantime, you will serve me, in my quarters." He concludes, as I blink up-teen times to process his words.

Was this him showing me mercy? I've to serve him in his quarters?

I nodded instantly, my throat dry as I struggled to find my voice. "I...I understand, Alpha. I will cooperate fully and I can't th-thank you enough!" I all but manage to whisper.

His gaze softened slightly, a glimmer of curiosity flickering in his eyes before it was gone...

"Good," He states, his voice tinged with a hint of intrigue. "I will personally oversee your assessment. If you prove to be innocent, there may be a chance for redemption here at our pack."

Redemption?

The word echoed in my mind, presenting a sliver of hope amidst the gruelling despair I had faced so far.

"Put her in the small room by the end of my floor! I will need her close by to fulfil her duties." He commands his two henchmen with a flick of his wrist as they nod.

The henchmen waste no time before guiding me out of the cell, leading me down the dimly lit corridor once more and back up the steps to the outside world...

My footsteps were heavy and uncertain, each step carrying the weight of my problems as the uneven ground continues to tear into my soles.

The Alpha followed closely behind us, a silent and imposing presence which made me feel uneasy...

It wasn't long before we reached a castle like building, one much larger than both my old Alpha's quarters and even our pack house back home. This place felt far more superior... far more intimidating...

Who was this man? What was this pack?

I was led upstairs by his large henchmen, deciding to keep my eyes on the floor as we passed by some of the staff - slightly embarrassed and ashamed of my current state.

Eventually, we stopped in-front of a door, before one of the men open it and push me inside.

My feet fail me, as they loosen their grips and leave me to fall forward into the room. I wince at the pain felt in my already bruised knees, before I push myself back up to stand...

The room was a decent size, much larger than what I was used to back home, as I gawked at the expensive interior and personal bathroom...

The Alpha cleared his throat, causing me to jump out of my trance, before motioning for me to stand at the center of the room.

I do as he instructs, before he begins circling me like a predator, his gaze dissecting every inch of my being.

The tension in the air was palpable as he began his interrogation - his henchmen seeming to now be gone - leaving us alone in one another's company.

"Tell me, Tragedy," He starts, his voice carrying an air of authority. "What were you doing near my pack's territory? How did you end up on that train?"

I took a deep breath, summoning all of my courage just to answer him...

"Alpha, sir, I am not a spy," I begin, my voice steady despite the roiling uncertainty within. "I was rejected by my ma-mate... who banished me... and so I boarded the train in desperation during the night, hoping it would take me far away from my painful past." By the end of my admission, a single tear falls down my cheek, as he watches it fall steadily.

The Alpha's gaze remains fixed on me, unyielding. "And what proof do you have to support your claims? If your mate had the power to banish you from the pack, then he must be of high status yes?" He pushes me.

I lowered my eyes, feeling a surge of helplessness wash over me. "I have no proof, Alpha," I admitted. "Only my word. I understand, though, that my word may not be enough, but I beg you for just a chance." I continue, as his large frame stands inches above my own.

The room fell into a heavy silence, the Alpha's scrutiny unrelenting as he seems to be in thought. Minutes stretched into eternity as he deliberated, his piercing green eyes searching for any trace of deception.

"Tell me your mates name, his status, his pack and the reason he rejected you!" He demands more knowledge next, as I tense at his tone.

"H-He... I'm a..." I begin to stutter, unable to string my words together effectively as his brows pull together in a glare.

"Start with his name?" He simplifies his ask, as I nod weakly and take a breath.

"D-Derrick Colt..." My heart clenches when saying his name aloud, as I suddenly move my hand to clutch my chest - the Alpha studying me intensely.

Why does it still hurt?

"What is his status?" He pushes, seeming suddenly bothered by the name.

"He... was my Alphas son... next in line... at the Moon Lust pack..." I continue to hold my heart as it races, surging pain through my body as I continue to remember the man who treated me so cruelly.

The disgust he held on his face as he rejected me...

"Why did he reject you?" The Alpha grits the question out, seeming enraged by the story, as I open and close my mouth in fear.

"Because sir... I... I am only a runt wolf... I was of no use to him... I was a burden to that pack." I whisper the last admission, not knowing whether he had even heard me or not.

Silence falls amongst us again, as the Alpha begins to slowly pace back and forth across the room - seeming in thought about something.

"So tell me this Tragedy... why have you not yet accepted his rejection? Do you wish to be tied to him still? Win him back? Perhaps return to your old pack one day?" The Alpha halts in his pacing, his green gaze settling on my own yet again.

"W-What? N-No?" I stumble for words, not understanding what he meant by the accusation.

"Then in order to stay here... in my pack... you must reject him this instant so that I can bare witness to you severing all ties!" He concludes, as I shuffle from foot to foot under his interrogation.

"Y-Yes sir... but I don't... know how? I didn't know I had to... accept his rejection." I tell him the truth, confused as to why I had never heard of such a thing.

The Alpha huffs slightly, seeming agitated by my lack of knowledge, before he begins - "That is why you are still in pain whenever you speak his name! You must accept that he rejected you, before you can move on!" He states as though it were obvious.

I nod in thought, thinking that it made sense.

"I-I... Tragedy... accept the rejection of... Derrick Colt... soon to be Alpha of the Moon Lust pack..." I find myself saying the statement aloud, before feeling an urge to gasp for air - my lungs suddenly feeling as though they had been released from a crushing hold.

"Good girl..." The Alpha nods his approval, his tone void of emotion as he murmurs the words.

"Clean up and get changed... I'll be back soon to discuss your next task... and make no mistake Tragedy... if you turn out to be a spy or something other... I will have you tortured and exiled... understand?" He grits, as I nod quickly, thankful for the opportunity to prove myself to him.

"Th-Thank you..." I tell him, and with that-

He leaves.
