Chapter 1

POV ALISSON COOPER

As I stepped out of bed, my eyes fixated on the dreaded clock. With a groggy hand, I silenced the alarm and dragged myself toward the bathroom in a sleepy haze. After completing my morning hygiene routine and enduring an icy cold shower that jolted me awake, I returned to my room to don my uniform. Standing before the mirror, ensuring every detail was in place for another day's work.

Exiting the room with anticipation brewing within me, a delightful aroma wafted through the air the scent of freshly brewed coffee lovingly prepared by Bonnie my precious savior who had provided not only shelter but also stability and employment that supported both our lives without any worry.

"Good morning Ms. Bonnie," I greeted her warmly as I approached her side planting a gentle kiss on her cheek.

Without her benevolence guiding us from destitution into security; we would have been left wandering on unforgiving streets devoid of even necessities like shelter or stable income.

"Good morning green eyes! How did you sleep?" she asked affectionately.

"Very well." My movements around the kitchen were purposeful as if preparing coffee held some sacred ritualistic significance.

"Do you think Debbie will visit today?"

"I'm afraid not I'll be taking public transportation to work."

"Oh, what a shame...but let me warn you dear Alisson: Tonight won't find me at home."

"Not that it concerns me directly but where are you going then?"

"Well, naturally it does concern your wellbeing Alisson for considering yourself akin to being family a daughter who deserves transparency."

"And likewise Ms. Bonnie you're more than just someone who took care of mere survival needs you've become like a mother figure whose presence is cherished deeply."

"I shall spend tonight at one friend's house we plan embarkation tomorrow for an exciting cruise journey!"

"A cruise? That sounds amazing!"

"Yes indeed an opportunity for relaxation awaits."

"Oh, alright then have a wonderful time," I replied with genuine enthusiasm.

Yet behind her eyes lay a hint of concern and worry. Bonnie approached me, gently grasping my hands in hers.

"I didn't want to leave you alone at home."

"But I won't be alone I'll have the companionship of my books."

"You could come along if you wanted..."

"You know that's not possible I have work commitments."

"Then stay over at a friend's place for the night?"

"After all these years together you should know by now that staying overnight anywhere other than here isn't something I'm inclined towards."

"So it seems like I am dealing with an old-fashioned lady!"

"I simply find comfort in solitude a loyal companion from days gone by; nothing quite compares to its embrace."

I swiftly diverted our conversation back to reality as my gaze darted toward the clock the realization struck me abruptly. With hurried steps, bag clutched tightly in the hand, I made my way towards the door preparing myself mentally for another day on the go.

"And when I return later tonight...you won't be here either, right?" A question lingered before departure.

"That is correct! You're welcome to bring your boyfriend should one exist!" she jested playfully.

"My job serves as both partner and provider" a response delivered without missing a beat.

A smile graced Bonnie’s lips momentarily,

"Well said indeed he will surely support you!"

"Precisely," was all that escaped from mine.

With determined strides through bustling morning streets, Bonnie fades into background noise. I arrived promptly at the bus stop where once again, the wristwatch became the focal point. The third time this week tardiness would plague arrival. The workplace awaited impatiently, a disapproving boss poised ready to unleash wrath upon sight. My path led down the corridor until the staff area came into view an escape route beckoning urgently. Sparing no moment further, I stowed away belongings, settled apron securely around my waist, gloves adorning my hands ready to face the day.

As I approached the counter, a wave of customers filled every available space within the bustling coffee shop. It was only 8 in the morning, yet this place thrived with energy and activity a hub for soccer enthusiasts and cultural aficionados alike. Men seemed particularly drawn to its vibrant atmosphere an observation not lost on me.

This café had become my refuge the sole employment opportunity that presented itself when options were limited. It was either here or resorting to being a maid which wasn't exactly my forte. Ms. Bonnie played an instrumental role in securing this job, and everything I possess today could be attributed solely to her. She extended a helping hand right after leaving the orphanage where I spent the majority of my childhood, nestled away somewhere up north. A humble establishment sustained by charitable donations from well-to-do individuals. When I turned eighteen, the caretakers informed me that the time had come to part ways. With big gates closing behind me, I found myself alone in an unfamiliar world devoid of guidance, and no money to buy food I stood utterly alone.

Initial days proved challenging as no one desired services from a dirty girl with unkempt hair. Fortune smiled upon me from Madam Bonnie one fateful encounter while assisting her during household shopping. Her compassionate heart resonated instantaneously. Unbeknownst to me, she offered shelter within her home. Instantly she transformed into an angelic figure clad in uncaring attire. A middle-aged widow, having no children, living a solitary existence it felt as though God Himself sent her to rescue me.

"Ma'am, would you like to take your order?"

"I apologize, did you say something?" My attention snapped back to reality as a teenage girl demanded service.

After promptly taking down the young customer's request, I noticed Debbie approaching. Perhaps it was time for our customary card game:

"How are you, Ms. Bonnie?"

"Just fine and she specifically asked about your presence today."

"She can't bear living without me I might drop by later to pay her a visit."

"You'll be wasting your time, I must warn you."

"Oh really? Why's that?"

"She won't be at home off on a cruise adventure instead!"

"How intriguing! So, you're home alone then?"

"Yes, but I have no intentions of exploiting the solitude," I retorted firmly.

"And why not? We could invite some guys over and make it a game night."

"I'm simply not in the mood for such revelry. I intend to enjoy the absence with my books and savor the tranquility." My voice carried an air of defiance.

With the conversation concluded, I returned to work. Fulfilling customers' demands became a priority. Some were pleasant and polite, others displayed rudeness accompanied by lingering gazes filled with malice. Amongst them, lurked those who regarded me as a mere object a piece of meat. Their advances were met with indifference; never once did Given entertain their harassment.

As soon as the workday came to an end, I hopped into Debbie's car. We exchanged farewells, and I made my way upstairs. It was 6 pm the hour when all I desired was a rejuvenating shower followed by sound slumber.
