No sign of him

"Oh shit," I hissed to myself when I realized the spot. I had been initially to spy on the wolves now had the bald man in my place bent over sniffing at the empty air.

Ducking behind a vent, I closed my eyes and held my breath to calm my beating heart. I wasn't afraid of a fight if it came to it.

I was excited.

A part of me wanted to be discovered. To have to fight my way out of this. Something so ingrained in me since I could take my first steps. How to kill and how to do it well.

I dared to peek around the vent and look for the bald werewolf. Disappointment ran through me when I saw he wasn't there. But not a moment too soon. I heard the light thud of boots on the roof behind me. He was following my trail and had made it to the second building.

As much as I wanted to turn and fight him, I knew it was too early on my mission to give away the fact that someone was coming after those who were pushing Mist. If word got to Apollo that his operations were being looked into, he might go into hiding.

I didn't want to make this job harder on myself, but there was an appeal in the idea of a new hunt. Oh, and to hunt a man like Apollo. Something inside of me purred at the thought.

Maybe it was the darkness born into me since the day the organization created me.

"Come out! I know you're there!" I heard his deep voice proclaim, followed by more footsteps that were getting closer. If I stayed still, he would get to me and I knew it was in my best interest to leave without a fight. For now.

I willed myself to blend into the shadows as I crouched into a lunge position with one hand braced on the cold metal of the vent at my back. With one final deep breath, I coiled my body tight as I readied myself.

"I can smell you..." the wolf snarled and an involuntary shiver crept up my spine and I grimaced.

And then I released the tension in my body and sprung over the edge of the warehouse roof. Only seconds passed as I soared through the air with the ground quickly coming up to meet me. This was going to hurt, and I knew it.

My body pulled itself into a ball, and I curled and rolled onto the landing on the concrete. My breath left in a cough as the force of my landing washed over me.

"Hey! Stop!" The bald man was looking down at me with his clawed hands digging into the gutters overhead. That jump would be a lot easier for him than it had been for me. I only had seconds to move.

Despite the pain of landing on the hard ground from the tall warehouse, I pushed myself up and bolted toward the black bike, waiting for me. I didn't get far before the sound of another body hitting the pavement reached my ears, but he didn't need the recovery time I had needed. Already the sound of crunching glass and gravel under heavy boots was coming after me.

I pushed back the tarp hiding my black motorcycle and swung my leg over, pushing it to life before I was seated comfortably. The motor roared to life and I let the sound briefly soothe me when the wheels spun, and I was heading into the street.

My relief didn't last long when I noticed in the side mirrors that a massive brown wolf was now chasing me down the empty street.

Ah, fuck.

His rage fueled growl fell over me and my heart skipped a beat. Worry creased my brows as I pushed the bike to its limit. We raced down the empty street as I realized we were quickly coming up to an exit that would lead me to a main road. Even at this time of night, there would be too many cars for the wolf to follow me while shifted.

Suddenly, the bike jolted and swerved on the grit under the tired. I turned to see that the wolf had caught up and was swiping his claws at the back tire.

My eyes swept over the road and, almost without thinking, I turned the bike down a narrow alley. Bright lights flashed in my eyes and a furious snarl followed as I made the turn and sped towards the main road at the end of the alley.

The bike shot out between the buildings making up the alley and landed roughly on smooth highway asphalt. My body tensed as I kept the bike in place between my legs and turned in time to miss being hit by a truck speeding down the street, blaring its horn at my sudden appearance.

A haunting howl followed me through the air as I raced away under the streetlights.

It might have been smarter to wait longer than a few days to come back to the port. There might be more security or wolves looking out after they'd seen someone watching them a few nights ago.

However, I needed as much information as I could get before jumping into something involving wolves. I'd fought them in the past, but this was potentially an entire pack I'd be dealing with in the dark. Even with my training, it would be stupid to fight several wolves on my own.

Perhaps I was stupid.

I was on another rooftop, peering over the edge and waiting to see if the same dingy boat would pull in. I'd gotten word that they scheduled to bring in another load tonight, and I needed to see if Apollo would make an appearance. So far, Lucky had been the only person to state this could be Apollo's pack behind the drug.

In the days since my last time on the dock, I'd had techs back at headquarters document all of Apollo's movements and his daily schedule for me. While I met with shady creatures in the dark to dig up information on this drug and where it would lead me, the Alpha was meeting with other influential leaders in fancy restaurants to prepare for the upcoming event.

I looked through the scope of my rifle as the familiar dingy fishing boat pulled up to the dock. A flash of movement showed a large man tying the boat in place and gesture for his companions to get moving.

My attention was drawn to another truck pulling up through the lot to get the boat. I cursed to myself when I realized this time there was a black SUV accompanying the storage vehicle. They definitely had back up this time.

I put the rifle to the side and got out my binoculars, and turned on their recording function. The men from the boat were already unloading their cases with the now familiar lyre embossed on the front.

The same bald wolf who had chased me into the street got out of the driver's seat and I narrowed my eyes with a grimace as he straightened his suit jacket and swiveled his head to survey the area. As the car door slammed, I looked to see the same short man from before getting out of the backseat of the vehicle, as well as two more stocky men.

I thought that the short man was someone of authority and these other werewolves were just part of the pack. He never turned his face in my direction, though, only looking out to the boat and truck being loaded up.

Again, no sign of Apollo being with them.
