Weekdays at Burnsies
Michael POV:
I left the house to the care of Mrs. Changretta and got started with my plan for the day. I headed to the Precinct. it was the one I had spent close to 24 hours the day before, it felt awkward going back there but some things had to be done.
I pulled up in front of the police station and walked in. As expected they paused what they were all doing and stared at me briefly, all of them bemused to see me and wondered what I could want.
I saw Officer Mark, I felt a surge of rage, but did my best to put it in check. I needed to be as level-headed as I possibly could. I walked towards him, and they all stopped and watched what I was going to do. I dramatically approached him.
"What do you want" He said confidently and Arogantly
"I need your help," I said
He stared at me blankly, trying to read my expression to see if I was trying to mess with him or not.
"Why on earth would I want to help you"
"Because it's your job"
He doesn't seem to be buying that.
I sighed heavily
"You made your point, you and I could argue all day about who's on the right st the it wouldn't matter. I wouldn't agree and neither would you. How about we stop whining about it and move on like men."
He stared again at me for a brief moment, again trying to find the lies in my eye, I doubt he found any.
"What do you want?"
"I need information about a case"
"What case?"
"A woman was poisoned three days and I understood this precinct was in charge of the case"
"The woman you drove to the hospital?"
"Yeah"
I wasn't surprised he remembered, I made a dent in his head because of it, and he wouldn't forget for a long time.
"I need every information about the case so far, like who the person who tried to kill her was and information you have about him so far"
"They caught someone already," he asked surprised
"You don't know"
"Not that I heard of"
"I thought you all knew everything that goes on here"
"There is a heaps case file of unsolved cases and murder enough for me to worry about, I could have missed that and not known of it's existence. To me, it's just another case file on the table. "
Why is he so goddam insensitive and arrogant, I thought.
"Can you help with or direct me to those in charge of the case"
"Follow me," He said
He walked to his table and sat while I trailed behind him. Curious eyes followed me as I followed, all laced with being denied entertainment.
He placed the World Best Dad Mug on the table and cracked his knuckles before switching on his computer. The screen of his computer came to life and for a brief moment, I was distracted by it's wallpaper. In the background of Officer Mark and a beautiful young lady with a radiant smile. I was sure it was his wife, they looked so great and happy together.
"Nice Looking Family," I said
"Thanks, Man," He said, like we were best friends "We are expecting a baby soon" He added
I could see he was excited about it, seeing he already looked forward to being a father with the world's best father mug on his table. He looked so happy about it, I was moved most slightly for a child or a partner. It wasn't something I envisioned or thought about at all, not alone being jealous of it.
He punched the system till he got to a search feature with a police logo.
"Who's the woman we are talking about"
"Hardy," I said "Aurora Hardy"
He typed in her name and clicked enter. Immediately the screen went black and access denied was written boldly on the screen.
"Wait what,! That's strange" He murmured
He tried it again and the result was the same
"What's wrong" I asked
"I was denied access to the case file"
"Why? Isn't that for high-level cases like espionage" I asked
"Yes"
"Then, why are you denied access, what's so special about an average woman getting poisoned"
"I have no idea" He replied
"It is probably a mistake or the leading officer on the case doesn't want anyone speaking into his case"
"Is that a plausible reason?" I asked bemused
"The chance of it happening is not zero"
"I need to know, do you know the officer in charge? Perhaps I could ask him a few questions"
I figured I should have done that in the first place, but I simply can't walk into the police and start asking for the policeman in charge of a case.
"I can ask the rest, someone should know." He said and stood up "Wait here" he added
Where can I possibly go?
I watched him walk to join the rest, I watched his lips trying to make out what he was saying but couldn't, I gave up at some point.
After talking to a couple of them for a few more minutes, he came back walking with another man trailing behind him. I knew not his name but I recognized him from watching from a cell for 24 hours. He was level-headed and he was the only one that kept looking my way in pity when I was holed up.
"This is Officer Trey, he was in charge of the case," officer Mark said
I stood up and shook him warmly
"You!" He exclaimed "Weren't you the one that was -"
"Locked up for a whole day? Yes it was I " I replied, completing his sentence for him
"Weren't you the one-"
"That locked him up? Yes, it was I " Officer Mark replied.
"You know what?" He said raising his hands "I won't try to understand why and how you both made up nor get involved with it" He said
"Fair enough"
"So, what do you need? Mark told me you wanted information about Aurora Hardy's case"
"Yes I did, anything you might have for me is very welcome"
"I'm sorry but I have nothing"
"The chief shut me out of the case"
"What! Why?" Mark asked
"I don't know, but whatever it is, I'm sure that damn Jordan is involved"
"Leo Jordan?"
"Yes, you know him?"
"Yes I do" I replied
"Then you could ask him, Chief forbade me from calling him in for some question. He is involved with whatever the fuck happened"
Never thought I'd see the day, my premonition about that bastard was true. And someone is finally seeing the light that he is a fucking ass hole.
"What about the man that was arrested"
"What man"
"He said you arrested someone"
"The Chief shut me down before I
Could nab anyone"
"Did you ask him why?" Mark asked
"You know how the chief is, he became feral when I tried to question his decision"
"So, no one was arrested," I asked
"None that I know of"
"What in God's reincarnation" I exclaimed
What is Leo trying to hide, what the hell is he hiding? Whatever it is I will get to the bottom of it myself. Whatever it is, I'd make sure Aurora doesn't get involved.
My first instinct was to face and challenge him, but that would be quite naive, I knew how powerful he was. It would be my loss if let him know I was up to whatever he was doing, I'd rather catch him off guard.
"I will get to the bottom of this", I said
"Whatever help you might need, I'd be glad to help," Officer Trey said.
"Thanks, I will take up your offer"
"I look forward to meeting you again," he said
I watched him leave. It was Mark and I again.
"I'm sorry I couldn't help, I wish I could but as you can see my hands are tied. Is there anything else I can help with?"
I stared at him bemused by his request, an hour ago, if both of us were marooned on an island, one would maim the other. But here he was offering to help me.
"There's something I want you to help me with"
"What is that?" He asked
