Teenage angst and boy problems
While Seph was eating alone in the corner during the celebration after the welcoming ceremony, Jaimie had come to sit with Seph. They didn’t say much, but there was a strangely comfortable silence, like usual, between the two. For some reason, they were just content; he was one of the few people that Seph didn’t immediately hate, maybe because he didn’t hate her. Dextra didn’t like him much, and she warned Seph he was a monster and that Seph shouldn’t trust him. Kailiani had stopped by for a few minutes to congratulate Seph on not killing anyone, which was her biggest fear going into the ceremony; she also fed Dextra some chicken, which Dextra loved. Though Kailiani soon realised it was a bad idea, Dextra attempted to char the chicken. She missed, and the burst of fire scorched the floor barely millimetres from Kailiani’s foot. Kailiani squealed loudly, leaping aside quickly, “Dex! You terrified me! You could have burnt me. Bad……fire creature!” She told Dextra, who chuffed smoke back and took the chicken from her hand. Seph and Jaimie just laughed at the interaction between them. Seph was sure that Dextra only did these things to scare Kailiani. Dextra had pretty decent aim when she was deliberately using her fire now. All bets were off if she was startled, scared, or even angry, though her aim went to pot. But if Kailiani wasn’t hit now, Dextra didn’t plan to hit her, only make her jump because Dextra thought it was funny to scare people.
Seph and Jaimie seemed to spend more and more time together over the next year. They shared a tutor because they both had a good command of the element of air. They started sharing those sessions. Jaimie did pretty well in training. It took Seph a little longer to get things because she couldn’t use the regular spells; she had to devise her own. They spent time doing homework together, helping each other where they could. They practised their magic and generally hung out. They both enjoyed being outside; Jaimie would offer to walk dogs for other coven members, and Dextra would play with the dogs, shunning Jaimie whenever he tried to interact. Seph and Jaimie often sat under trees, watching the animals and chatting about nothing in particular.
Jaimie finally asked Seph out on their first date just before she turned 15; it was September, and they went to see a scary movie and had pizza at a well-known local restaurant. It was Seph’s first date and, at the end of the night, her first kiss too.
It was the start of a seemingly adorable relationship. Seph and Jaimie already spent much of their free time together; now, they were joined at the hip. They went practically everywhere together. Jaimie did seem to calm Seph down, to begin with. They would go out every couple of weeks. The coven elders were sure there would be a handfasting after the pair finished school. They approved of the relationship, especially as Jaimie seemed to be a calming influence on Seph. There was some concern that Seph would be a bad influence on Jaimie; however, this was quickly dismissed. The coven expected that the relationship would fall into their typical expectations, him being the more dominant partner and being able to control her rather than being swept up in her nonsense. Jamie was pleasant enough right now, a decent boy and good boyfriend who seemed to care about Seph and Dextra, but the coven, in general, seemed to be stuck in the ’50s; they encouraged traditional gender roles.

The teenagers were still being taught by the coven about their powers and how to use them. As they turned 16, though, these sessions started over the summer, so Seph was a little younger. They would teach boys and girls separately; girls were taught how to use their powers to help them keep house, look after children, and potions that would clear up spots, healing magic for when children injured themselves. Seph’s powers were not suited for cooking, housework, makeup, and stuff; they were tailored for blowing shit up and defending people and places. When this became clear to everyone Seph was taught with the boys, things changed a bit between the young couple. They would often be paired together, Seph would hold back, not wanting to hurt him, but he went at her full strength. When Seph returned with her full power, he got seriously injured, and she was no longer allowed to train with the others.
From then on, he was always rougher with Seph, dragging her around and talking over her and making decisions for her, “you know, you useless piece of witch, you had better learn how to cook and keep a house like a human because I sure as hell will not be doing it” he would often tell her. But whenever he pushed Seph too far, so she tried to dump him, he would be nice again for a while.
There were more and more arguments; some turned physical; well, mostly Jaimie got physical. Sometimes, Seph tried to defend herself in the first few arguments, but she stopped when it only worsened things. Her mother expressed concern about this behaviour, though she was the only one. However, Seph was too far sucked into Jaimie’s stories and apologies. The promises of “I love you so much, baby”, and “It’ll never happen again, I swear,” or even “if you stopped doing X and winding me up, then it wouldn’t happen.” Seph’s behaviour took another nosedive. Her clothes were darker and her accessories scarier. She was fighting and arguing more at school.

Seph’s parents threw her a Halloween-themed 16th birthday party. Everyone dressed up, and the food was green, black, and purple. Seph dressed in her skeleton costume, her face painted with incredible detail. Jaimie was also dressed up as a skeleton; though he had a mask on, he refused to let Seph put makeup on him.
It was a brilliant evening. A few people managed to sneak in bottles of alcohol, and most of the teenagers sat in a corner drinking subtly, then playing spin the bottle truth or dare with an empty bottle. Seph was dared to sing karaoke, go and dance with Peter and other elders, let Dextra loose to char the food, and take Jaimie out onto the dance floor and properly snog him where everyone could see. Luckily she drank enough not to remember most of these things or anything else she did that night.
Unfortunately, the elders were sober, and they remembered. Seph received an exceptionally long lecture on her behaviour and being responsible. As a punishment, Seph was made to clean the community centre without magic (not that she would have tried to use any).

16 gave way to 17 for Seph and Jaimie. Their relationship was turbulent as ever, and a few people questioned whether they should be allowed to continue or if an actual adult needed to step in. Looking back on this time of her life, Seph wished they had stepped in with everything she had. She knew deep down that they would be doing it for him and not her if they did. Seph had really grown into herself; she was still only 5 feet tall and pretty sure she would be stuck being short for the rest of her life. But her pixie-cut hair suited her perfectly, even if she was forced to leave it her natural dirty blonde for now. She had a stunning size 12 body, a DD chest, an ass that was just the right mix of soft and pert, and a perfect size for her body. Her nose was straight, and her skin unblemished and smooth. Her green eyes, though, were her most prominent feature. They seemed to glow when she used her powers or was really angry. The humans, of course, just wrote it off as a trick of the light or their imagination. She was often described as the hot goth girl, at least by the human boys at school. But they also said she was too scary to approach and broken by Jaimie. Either way, no one intervened; no one else dared to approach Seph. She tried her best to make things work out.
Jaimie’s parents loved Seph. They weren’t so interested in coven politics and weren’t bothered by her powers. They liked that she was calm (well, she was when she was there anyway) and seemed like a good wife for their son. They had given her an open invitation to come whenever she wanted. Seph spent a lot of time around at the Johnson’s place, her and Jaimie’s younger sister, only by 11 months, as Charlie was so quick to point out, clicked very quickly.
Charlie was Jaimie’s complete opposite. Charlie was sweet and soft and funny. Seph couldn’t imagine Charlie even saying a harsh word to her, let alone trying to hurt her. Over the months, as Charlie grew up a little and she and Seph bonded, Seph found that she enjoyed Charlie’s company more than her brothers. Jaimie didn’t seem to care or notice that Seph spent more time with his sister and more nights sleeping on the floor in her room than in his bed; his parents wouldn’t care if she shared his bed. They didn’t believe that the teens should be kept apart, nor did they think that he was a danger to Seph, as others had suggested.
Over time, the more time she spent with Charlie, the more she wanted to spend with her; Seph slowly felt her feelings towards the other girl changing. She was feeling the first tingles of attraction towards her. Charlie was on her mind more than Jaimie most days by the time the exams were starting that year; she loved catching a glimpse of Charlie in the corridor and being able to have a little conversation or walk in the same direction together for a little while. Dextra liked Charlie better. She tried to talk to the girl; Dextra would bring her food and presents, granted they weren’t the usual type of presents, hot coals and pretty stones, charred mice, flames. In general, not really anything Charlie wanted, but Dextra liked to give them. Charlie took them because Dextra’s happy dance was adorable, a kind of tiny little wiggle with huffs of smoke and usually at least one transformation. Seph was getting increasingly confused as time went on. She felt more and more attracted to Charlie the more time they spent together.
