Chapter 5 Not Knowing One's Own Identity?

Remington brought these vegetables and chickens, with dirt on his pants, suggesting that he must have just finished helping out in the fields.

"What's wrong with being a farmer? Don't you eat rice grown by farmers?" Sophia immediately retorted against Connor.

"I didn't mean to look down on farmers," Connor seemed well-intentioned, "I just think that nowadays, farmers have shifted to other professions, and those who stay in rural areas can't earn much. I'm just afraid that you'll suffer if you follow him. Also, when you two were talking outside yesterday, I heard that your husband's company went bankrupt, the house and car got seized by the bank, and he's broke. Is it true or did I hear it wrong?"

"You eavesdropped on our conversation yesterday?"

"What eavesdropping? I just happened to overhear," Connor continued to pretend to be a good person, "Sophia, I'm just worried that you might be deceived. If he asks you for a hundred thousand dollars on the first day of your marriage, it's really alarming. Could it be that he saw your capabilities and earning potential and married you to rely on you for a living?"

Sophia rejected his advances and cursed him, but then she married Remington, which remained a grudge in Connor's heart.

Saying that, Connor pretended to be concerned, looking Remington up and down.

"Sophia, to put it nicely, you got married, but to put it bluntly, you found a loser. How could you make such a big decision without discussing it with me and Lilly? Look at what an unreliable loser you married."

Under Connor's guidance, everyone began whispering to each other.

"So Miss Sophia found an incompetent guy."

"He does look handsome, didn't expect that."

"What's so surprising, many pretty boys nowadays want to rely on women for a living."

The people at the company pointed and whispered about Remington. They originally thought that he was tall and handsome, and that Sophia had made a good choice, but now it was all negative opinions.

Remington didn't pay any attention to it at all.

He stood at the top of the food chain, and these people were like ants scurrying beneath him while he admired the scenery.

Squeezing them to death would be effortless. But he didn't have the time for that. He simply continued to enjoy his view.

He was curious to see Sophia's reaction, so his gaze remained fixed on her. Sophia thought Remington was embarrassed and in a difficult situation, so he kept silent.

Men care about their reputation. Although they lack emotions, at least she chose him herself.

How could Connor be so heartless?

"Connor, I remember when you started your company, you were also broke. It was Lilly who took out fifty thousand and asked relatives and friends for another fifty thousand to make up one hundred thousand for you to invest in the company, right? At that time, your whole family came to the city without jobs or income. The entire family's expenses were paid for by her, right?"

"So, it seems that you are also incapable, huh?" Sophia retorted without any reservation, causing Connor's face to instantly turn red.

Not satisfied with this, Sophia deliberately grabbed Remington's arm and said, "My man did indeed go bankrupt and has no money, but he is diligent and will soon start looking for work to make a living. A man like him, who has fallen and risen, has incredible resilience and determination. He will surely achieve great things in the future. Unlike some people who are used to living off others and still see others as freeloaders."

Connor's expression became increasingly unpleasant. "Sophia, don't make baseless accusations. I've been making money all these years and haven't asked Lilly for a penny."

"Wasn't it Lilly who provided the money for your house?" Sophia countered.

"I... " Connor couldn't refute.

The other people in the company also developed a new understanding of Connor, who had always been successful.

“So Mr. Walker actually relied on his wife to start his business?”

“But it's strange! Miss Sophia and Mr. Walker always got along well, didn't they?”

“Why does it feel like they are competing with each other today?”

“Could they have fallen out?”

Everyone realized this, and of course, Sophia did too.

She rejected Connor's confession and didn't satisfy his vile and disgusting demands, so he held a grudge.

The days to come would not be peaceful!

But Sophia was not afraid.

"Connor, why is your face so pale? Does what I said make you uncomfortable? If you're uncomfortable, then go home quickly and don't come to dinner with us. Don't ruin your appetite later." Saying that, Sophia signaled everyone to get in the car.

There were only two cars in the company, a business van and a sedan. After arranging the dozen or so employees, there was no room left for her and Remington. So she called an Uber.

Connor was still standing there. After the company's employees left, he didn't even bother to maintain appearances. He wished he could devour Sophia.

"You bitch! Did you have to make a fool out of me in front of the employees? Do I have a grudge against you?"

"Connor, after working with me for so many years, don't you know me? I usually don't provoke anyone, but if someone provokes me, I will definitely not let it go. Besides, you were the one who mocked and ridiculed my husband first."

Connor looked at the departing car with disdain once again.

The hem of Remington's trousers was covered in mud.

"He is originally a bankrupt and useless man, incapable of doing anything. Are we not allowed to say that?"

"Say that again!" Sophia warned Connor with the calmest and most piercing gaze.

Connor didn't dare to say anything more.

He was afraid that this woman would go crazy, just like last time in the hotel room when she almost destroyed his dick.

The two of them were in such an unpleasant quarrel. However, Remington, who was watching from the side, remained calm throughout.

Bankruptcy and being penniless were identities arranged for him by Charles. But being a kept man and a farmer, these two new identities intrigued Remington.

Surprisingly, these identities didn't make Sophia feel embarrassed at all!

It was at this moment that the Uber driver called.

After picking up the call, Sophia looked at the car parked on the side of the road and intentionally held Remington's hand in front of Connor. "Darling, let's go."

This was the second time today that Sophia held Remington's hand. Remington knew that she was intentionally doing it in front of Connor. He didn't refuse.

After getting into the car, Remington looked at Sophia and deliberately asked, "Did I make you feel embarrassed just now?"

"There's nothing to be embarrassed about."

Only then did Sophia realize that she was still holding Remington's hand and hurriedly let go, then comforted him.

"Don't take Connor's words to heart. Instead of wasting time on these useless social interactions, why not do something more meaningful with your energy," Sophia said.

Remington often said these words to the executives and employees of the company, so Sophia didn't need to teach him. But when Sophia said it, he actually listened patiently.

After finishing speaking, Sophia asked the driver to take them back to the rental house first and put the chicken and vegetables that Remington brought into the refrigerator. Remington also changed his clothes.

On the way to the hotel again, Sophia asked, "Your father has a bad back, right? Will it hurt his back to do farming? Make sure he rests and doesn't overexert himself."

Indeed, the vegetables were grown by Remington's family, and the chicken was raised by Charles himself. But it was the servants of the estate who actually did the work. They had a large estate in the city center, and the old master, with nothing else to do, liked to order the servants to work the land.

But Remington wouldn't reveal the truth and just responded with a faint, "hmm."

When they arrived at the hotel, the shameless Connor and a dozen employees were already there. However, they were all refused entry to the private room.

The chubby hotel manager apologized, "Mr. Walker, I'm truly sorry, but the private room you reserved was already taken. The other private rooms are also fully occupied today, I apologize."

Connor argued, "But I reserved that private room already. You're telling me someone is already inside? I don't care who it is that entered LuxePalate, but today you must free up the private room for me."

"Mr. Walker, I already told you, the person inside the private room is a local councilor. I can't offend such a high-ranking leader just for you."

"So you mean my status is inferior to the one inside, right?"
