Alice and Robert belonged to important families, although they had known each other since they were children, they did not see each other again until they learned that they were engaged.  Robert refused to marry her, as he neither loved her nor knew her.  When Alice learned that Robert did not want that marriage, she was relieved, as she did not want to marry him either and loved another man, so she appealed to her parents to annul the engagement, but they refused, as if they refused it would seem that they were more important and powerful, so the Taylors had to honor that engagement.  Everything went on until the day of the wedding and once celebrated, Robert vented his anger against young Alice for forcing him to marry her and not refuse as he did.  But Alice tries to explain to him that she didn't want to marry him either, and even confesses to him that she loves someone else.  But those words only make Robert angry, believing all the time that Alice feels superior to him and so he demands her to tell him who is the man she loves, but Alice can't tell him that, because he is Robert's best friend.
