Chapter 3
Eva was engaged in a spirited discussion with her best friends after their first class, occasionally noting the disapproving glares from the Crescent Black students. By her side walked Martin, the Beta’s son, and his sister Catherine, while Lex followed closely behind. An Alpha’s daughter always carried an air of authority, compelling her friends to watch over her.
“Hey, Eva, want to check out that new training center that just opened?” Catherine asked with a radiant smile, showcasing her pristine white teeth.
Eva cherished rigorous training sessions and was widely regarded as one of the pack’s most promising warriors.
“Sure,” Eva agreed with a faint smile, though she preferred the freedom of running and lifting rocks in the untamed wilderness over the confines of concrete walls. Yet, she couldn’t refuse Catherine’s request, not when she looked so earnest.
“Eva!” Lex grumbled with irritation, his hypnotic silver eyes narrowing. They seemed to contain traces of liquid mercury.
“We have our special night tonight. Have you forgotten?”
Monday nights were their private sanctuary of friendship, exclusive to the three of them. They were determined to maintain this tradition, chatting, indulging in sugary snacks, and watching a new movie each week.
“Sorry, Catherine! Duty calls,” Eva joked, raising her hands in surrender. Catherine rolled her eyes, fully aware that Eva and Lex were inseparable when it came to matters of duty.
“Oh, I forgot!” Catherine pouted.
“I think we’re all a bit disoriented today, considering the circumstances,” Martin noted, his eyes scanning a group of girls with a critical eye.
As was his customary habit, the Beta’s son passed judgment on those around him, offering sly comments and sarcastic observations.
“Considering the Alpha’s agreement with the leaders of Crescent Black, I don’t foresee many problems here,” Lex added, punctuating his words with a loud yawn. Clearly, he was not a morning person.
“Waking up early, attending pointless classes, and pretending to listen to those who ended up here because they couldn’t cut it elsewhere. It’ll be more of the same,” Lex grumbled, his arm draped over Catherine’s shoulder. She shoved him away with a growl, unamused by his grumbling.
“And what’s that, Lexi?” Martin quipped, sporting a mischievous grin.
“It’s evident, Eva,” Martin responded confidently. “What kind of Beta would I be if I couldn’t read people?”
Eva chuckled, noticing the furious girl who was now taking aim at Martin.
“Well, for your information, I am the future Luna of Crescent Black,” she declared, convinced that victory was within her grasp.
“Why hasn’t your Alpha marked you yet, princess?” Martin teased, crossing his arms and challenging her to explain the inexplicable. He had always enjoyed engaging in debates with girls, which might explain why Eva’s only female friend was his sister, Catherine.
“Or should I say, mistress?”
Eva had a theory about Martin: he wore a mask of sarcasm and solitude to conceal his true self and the loneliness he felt. Surprisingly, he was the one among their group who genuinely yearned for a mate, a fact he would never admit.
“He did mark me, but in a place you’d never think of,” the she-wolf responded, baring her fangs.
Martin’s laughter, dripping with mockery, reverberated through the corridor.
“Oh, sweetie, poor you. I can think of places you’d never go. Mine are real, whereas yours exist only in your head.”
Eva could see the girl seething with anger, while her friends were left in shock. Luna or not, she was undoubtedly someone of importance within Crescent Black pack.
“Let’s just go. The girl over there is about to pounce on you and create a scene,” Eva whispered to Martin, only to realize she had spoken aloud.
As they turned to walk away, the confrontation escalated when the girl launched herself at them. She was swift, but not swift enough to outmatch the Full Moon Alpha’s daughter.
With a fluid, precise movement, Eva pinned her to the wall, gripping her throat with a single hand. Her wolf was now in control. The girl’s heart raced wildly beneath Eva’s grasp.
“Maybe you shouldn’t mess with an Alpha’s blood like me. The next time you try, I won’t hesitate to slam your empty head against the wall.”
Eva’s wolf, when provoked, could be fiercely violent. Moreover, Titus had been on edge since they arrived in the parking lot that morning, for reasons unknown.
Gradually, Eva regained control, blinking her eyes several times.
“Sorry, my wolf got the best of me.” A moment later, the she-wolf slapped Eva so hard that she saw stars, planets, and gods laughing at her.
Martin growled in fury, deeply offended that someone had dared to touch Eva while he was present.
The situation quickly escalated, with Eva losing control and unleashing a flurry of punches, while Martin yelled and restrained the other girls, receiving scratches and bites.
“Enough!”
A terrifyingly commanding voice echoed through the halls, bringing everything to a standstill.
And then Eva heard it.
That enchanting word, the one each of us yearns to hear, the word that can absurdly alter our lives forever.
“Mate…”
With those words, the world seemed to stand still for Eva. A tumultuous mixture of fear, surprise, and anticipation washed over her. Everything she thought she knew was about to change, and she had no idea how it would affect her life or the pack.
As the word “mate” hung in the air, the tension was palpable. Eva felt a sense of foreboding, as if the entire world were on the precipice of a life-altering revelation. The implications of this discovery weighed heavily on her mind, leaving her with more questions than answers.
The unknown mate, their connection to Crescent Black, and the secrets of her pack were all intricately intertwined, and Eva couldn’t help but feel a growing sense of unease. The chapters of her life were unfolding in unexpected ways, and the journey ahead promised both challenges and revelations.
As the echoes of that fateful word reverberated through the hallway, Eva’s heart raced, and she braced herself for the uncertain future that lay ahead.
