Chapter 2

I was still recovering from shock at what Mr Varane told me after Meera came in to drop some files. He said an evil werewolf killed his daughter. Who would go to length to kill an innocent lady, was it to get back at Mr Varane? I was honestly sorry for poor old Mr. Varane. Sighing, I grabbed a carton of milk from a shelf and drank. The creamy milk soothed my insides and my head became clearer.

I went to the bedroom and grabbed my notepad, and I scribbled down,

Killed, raped

Unknown werewolf killer

I sighed and my eyes started to droop. I stared at what I had written down and, oddly enough, there was this feeling, like a sixth sense, gnawing at me that this was related to my parents' disappearance.

On the day my parents left me, I got a note which said I would never see my parents again. Hours later, the lawyers came and said my parents died in a car accident. I didn't even remember seeing any buried bodies, but now I hear Mr Varane talk about his daughter’s murder.

I just felt this was the way to investigate my parents. My eyes finally refused to stay open and I fell asleep. Of course, my memories came again as dreams.

“Diana dear, won’t you go to see your aunt, Brielle? She has some cool tricks, ya know.”

“Yes Mommy, can I have my milk now? I don’t even care who Aunt Brielle is, all I want is my milk,” Diana said, playing with her mother’s hair as her mother did her pinafore. Her mother straightened and led Diana to the table. She poured some milk into the cereal first, then poured another into a glass.

“Yum Mommy, why is milk so good?” Diana yelled, grinning cheekily at her. Her mother shrugged and ruffled Diana’s blond hair.

“Milk is special compared to other drinks because it comes from living breathing mammals like humans, goats, and cows,” her mother explained.

“Is that the only drink mammals can produce Mom?” Diana asked, gulping down the last of her milk.

“I……I think so,” her mother replied.

“Really Mom? What about pee?” Diana asked seriously.

“You can’t drink pee, you know that, hon” her mom answered.

“What about the white sticky stuff that males produce” Diana asked, and her mother's face reddened. How the hell did she know that? She was just twelve.

“Who told you that?” Her mother said sternly and Diana raised a brow.

“Chill Mom, our Science teacher told us in class, Mom do you know how it works?” Diana asked and her mom shook her head.

“Stop lying mom, I know that white stuff made me. Just tell me how you and Dad did it, please Mom”

I woke to the sound of knocking and opened the door to see Dave with a parcel. He smiled when he saw me.

“Hi Diana, this is for you. Sign here please,” he said, and I signed. He grinned again and winked at me.

“Hey Dave, what’s up? Where is Max?” I asked, and Dave smiled.

“He's chasing rats at home, and I now have a bike”, he pointed to a brand new red bike, “Can’t carry the stubborn dog in that”, he explained.

“Oh, you said this is for me?” I asked and he nodded.

“Gotta go now Diana, bye” he waved and I watched him climb his bike and drive off. I smiled and walked inside.

I stared at the brown paper bag, tore the seal, and dug my hand into the bag. I took out an envelope and opened it. Inside the envelope was a note and it read.

It’s your turn, I am coming.

I stared at the note and fear washed over me, I was scared to hell of dying, and now this. I grabbed my phone and dialed Mara's number but it was redirected to a business call.

Who the hell is after me now?

I have no money. This house was left to me by my parents. It's funny how I had no real home back then.

After the disappearance of my parents, the lawyer came and took me to an orphanage, telling me I was too young to handle the house. I was moved from the orphanage to various foster homes until I was of age and the lawyer found me.

I wish I remembered the lawyer’s face. I would like to thank him someday, but right now I have a lot of things to figure out, and I won’t rest till I get my answers.

My phone buzzed, it was a message from Mr Varane. It read:

"Stay indoors Diana, I got a bad feeling, the same feeling I felt before my daughter died. I’ll see you tomorrow. Always watch your back."

I stared at the message, confused, this death of Mr. Varane's daughter seemed to be linked to my parents. If Mr Varane had a bad feeling that something was gonna happen minutes after I got the damned note, then I think it was connected.

If only I could get some clues and I got the feeling Mr Varane wasn’t telling me something, and I got the feeling if he told me, my life was gonna change.

I picked up my phone and dialed the number that Mr. Varane used to message me and he picked up at the first ring.

“Hello Diana, miss me already?” He said chuckling and I laughed, but my mood changed immediately.

“You are right, Mr Varane,” I said.

“How? The message?” He asked.

“I got a note,” I told him what the note said and I could hear his breathing being labored on the phone.

“I knew this would happen” his voice sounded so tired, “I am so sorry Diana, sorry I didn’t tell you” his accent made his voice deeper.

“Mr Varane, what are you talking about?”

“I am your Lawyer, Diana”, he dropped the bomb, and I nearly dropped my phone.

“What!” I yelled.

“Yes Diana, I have been watching over you, keeping you from danger. Now I have contacted you, he knows and he is coming,” he said.

“Wait who?” I asked.

“Holyshit, Dammit!” he yelled over the line.

“W…wait!” I yelled, but the line went dead, and I sat wearily on my bed.

Mr Varane was my lawyer. It was all I could comprehend. Is he ok? Why did he hang up the call?
