Chapter 4
Luka's P. O. V
I stared at the ceiling in the cozy building. Besides me, on the gigantic bed was my pet husky. I knew my people were waiting, waiting for me to choose a mate, but I couldn't, not why guilt flooded my every system. Steel whined as if sensing my mood. It's strange how he could understand me so well.
Maybe it's the fact that I am not fully human.
I have been called many names as I grew up: Warrior, Soldier, Rogue, Heartless, Monster, then finally, Alpha. My father gave me the throne when he died at a very good age, and my mother stayed at her brother's pack in a city far away.
And yes, I am a werewolf and the current alpha of my pack.
I love my people fiercely and will protect them to the last.
A knock jolted me from my thoughts and Steel barked loudly, he jumped down from the bed and stood in front of me, but I stared into his eyes hard and he understood and lowered himself to the ground. I turned to the door and yelled, “Come in.”
One of my guards came in, clad in full combat gear, his boots echoed on my tiled room floor, “Your majesty………….”
“Stop,” I said, “I prefer you call me by my name or Sir or Alpha, anything but not Your Majesty.”
The guard nodded, “We have sighted no threat. It seems clear.”
“It's not,” I said, I could feel it, “Something is coming big, right at me and to this pack”.
“Yes Alpha, the people are also agitated, saying you should choose a mate fast or the link between you and the pack will weaken” the guard reported, and I nodded and put on a shirt.
“It's alright, go back to your post, stay armed” I ordered, and he rushed off.
I scowled, I hated this uncanny feeling I had, that my people would follow me to the end. I was starting to think I was a psycho like that crazy lady yesterday. I slipped on my pants as my thoughts shifted to yesterday's incident. I have never seen a lady that infuriated me the most like her.
She literally crashed into me and was still claiming I was in the way.
I shook my head.
Steel stood where he sat and barked excitedly when he saw me bring out a huge chunk of meat from the freezer. I threw one to him, then I tore into the other, relishing the steamed meat flavor. I finished the meat and stared at my messy hand and sighed, sometimes I even wondered why my dad ever made me alpha.
“You sure, you don't want any weapons” my right-hand man and best friend, Tyler, asked me as we fixed our comm devices.
One advantage of being an alpha was I became damned rich, and I have access to lots of cool gadgets. I also have a team among my people who manufacture our type of gadgets like Spy glasses, laser watches, super sharp swords, near invulnerable cars, almost like the Black panther movie I once watched.
“Luka?”
“Yeah, yeah, we don't need weapons today,” I said, Tyler grinned at me mischievously and I raised a brow.
“Got a mate yet?” he asked.
I grunted and put on my suit. I glanced at Tyler.
“You know I don't need one”, I growled and Tyler laughed, and slapped me on the back.
“Look at you, Luka, the mighty ruthless killer of enemies, scared of getting a mate,” Tyler joked.
“You know that's not why,” I said as we walked to a Ferrari, “I’ll drive,” I said as the doors automatically opened and we slipped in.
As I started the car, I slammed my foot on the gas and the car shot out of my garage. I like driving like a maniac. Tyler just sat beside me in the passenger seat and put on his earphones.
“You need a mate to strengthen you and our pack bond,” Tyler said, and I nodded. I wasn't really thinking of that now.
I thought of Logan, my younger brother, not like in blood though Logan was just a teen I rescued when I was much younger. I think I was even a teen back then. He is almost eighteen now.
“How do you think Logan is faring right now” I asked Tyler. Tyler chuckled.
“That kid is way too smart for his own good. I am sure he will be doing fine,” Tyler said.
We reached the place where Logan had been studying for four years. Today was his last day here and that's why we came to pick him up. He sat somewhere on the pavement, and my mouth widened to a grin.
“Logan!” I called, and he turned to me. His eyes lit up and he jogged over to us.
I noticed his backpack looked heavy, “Yo bro, you look………..more a man” I said.
Logan had really changed. We were so much taller, almost as tall as me and Tyler, which was much for an eighteen-year-old kid, his puppy brown eyes looked at me in admiration.
“I am so happy you came and hey, hi Tyler,” Logan said, his voice even deeper.
Tyler gave him a fist bump and patted his shoulders, we grabbed his belongings and loaded them in the back of the Ferrari, and we sped off. I just wish life was just as relaxed as this, where I get to pick my kid brother, not prepare for war as the alpha, but I knew the war was coming whether I wanted it or not.
Suddenly, an idea flashed through my mind.
The lady who bumped into me yesterday, I could choose her as a mate.
I know she is not human.
I could sense something else in her but my wolf instincts couldn't figure out what that was. Oddly enough, I could smell she was a wolf. She looked like one I could pay to act like a fake mate. I could use it to boost my people's morale, I smiled to myself as we neared Avalon, a modernized town in Neonhaven for werewolves.
The city still amazed even me, the alpha.
I grinned at Logan, “Still remember the sight?” I asked. Logan stared and grinned at me, and my day never felt better. I only knew this feeling would last only an hour, as my memories would come back to haunt me.
If only I could find this lady and persuade her to be my temporary mate
