Chapter 5

Diana's P. O. V

I gulped down the coffee after I finished a plate of barbecue ribs and wiped my mouth clean with a napkin. My hair suddenly stood up and I turned to see a bald guy in black combat gear watching me across the street. The way he was watching me made me nervous.

I needed to get out of here quickly.

He propped himself on a black sedan and I waited for him to take his eyes off, but he still watched me, cursing in fear.

I walked out of the restaurant acting like nothing was wrong. As I turned back, I saw the ugly bald guy leaning towards the sedan window and pointing at me.

It looked like he was talking to someone in the car, sensing an opportunity.

I turned and ran away at full speed.

I ran to the company I worked at and rushed to Mr Varane's office. He sat on his swivel chair chewing his favorite gum, he raised his head from his computer screen when I rushed in.

“Hey Diana, what's…………he stopped when he saw my face, “What's wrong Diana?” he asked.

“I saw a bald guy, watching me across Bills and Meals restaurant. He didn't look to be alone,” I said, panting. Mr Varane muttered a curse in what sounded like French.

I made a mental note to ask him later. He shut down his computer and grabbed his phone.

“I need backup now, they are here,” he said on the phone and ended the call. He turned to me, “Just stay with me Diana, we are gonna be fine”, he assured me and I nodded.

By that time, more of the sedan was outside and the bald guy in combat gear pointed at the building.

My eyes bugged when I saw them. They slipped out guns, they looked to be getting ready to breach the building. I tapped Mr. Varane.

“Umm, I think you should see this," I pointed, and he suddenly looked very worried. He grabbed his phone to make a call. When hell broke loose, the noise of gunfire seemed to be everywhere.

“Get down!” Mr. Varane yelled and I threw myself to the ground, the door blasted open and a dude with a rifle walked in and saluted Mr. Varane who slumped in relief.

“Status?” Mr. Varane asked.

“Bad” the guy replied, “We are holding them off for……………” the building shook, interrupting him. The guy frowned.

“Delta, do you copy” he said, but there was no response.

Mr. Varane's face hardened, “We have to protect her,” he said to the dude, who nodded, but before he could move he was sent flying back by the impact of a bullet and the door blasted open.

Men in black combat boots flooded the office.

One of them removed his mask and it was the bald guy from earlier. He smiled evilly at Varane.

“Nice to meet you Varane, the legendary hunter. Heard you retired, come on! Don't be shy about showing the girl your skills, and yes Mr. Steffan sends his regards, he says he wants her alive, so calmly step aside in peace. We honestly don't want blood in your luxurious office”, the bald guy said.

“You don't want blood?” Varane growled, “And you killed my entire team, Kosvo” Varane yelled, but the bald guy, Kosvo, just smiled, crazily.

“They resisted, dear old Varane. The same fate might happen to you if you resist too. Just hand her over. What has she ever given to you that you kept her from us all this……………” before Kosvo could finish his statement, Mr. Varane slipped out a coin and flipped it, in the blink of an eye it was a sword and he sliced off Kosvo's head. I nearly vomited at the sight.

“Run!” Mr. Varane yelled and he sliced bullets out of the air as Kosvo's men opened fire.

He charged upfront and took out two, creating an opening for me. I burst through and ran.

The last thing I saw was Mr. Varane kicked up a round piece of metal and using it as a shield.

I ran toward the back exit and I turned a corner to meet a man surrounded by men in the same black combat gear as the ones earlier.

Instantly my hair stood on and I knew this was the real deal. The man clapped when he saw me, he was creepy in a way.

He was not ugly, but his eyes looked wild and mad.

“Oh Diana dear, I am Steffan, I am so pleased to finally meet you. After years of searching, you truly know how to hide, or was it Varane? Oh, my men will deal with him for sure and if he escapes that……., you see these men here” he gestured to the men behind him.

“They aren't men. Varane wouldn't stand a chance, Bullock!” he called, and one of the masked men stepped forward.

“Show her,” he said, smiling, and the masked man nodded and slipped off his mask and the ugliest face I had ever seen came into view. His skin was green, he grinned widely at me and fangs were evident in his mouth. On his head were small horns.

“So you see no one can save you now, you can't escape. I am not human, either, see,” he said.

His eyes turned yellow and he started to shrink, his clothes started to rip and I could hear bones cracking.

Within minutes, a huge black wolf stood in front of me, and as I blinked, it slowly morphed back to Steffan, naked, and I averted my eyes.

He chuckled and his men gave him new clothes which he slipped on. I stood watching while racking my brain on how to escape. Steffan regarded me.

“You can't escape me, Diana, so stop trying……………..”

“I think you are wrong,” a familiar deep voice said, and everyone turned to look.

My heart soared, it was the guy from the restaurant who I crashed into.

“I am taking the lady with me, Steffan,” he said. I wisely went to stand behind him in case these beasts opened fire.

Steffan's eyes got wilder and he looked real furious, “Bullock” he roared, “Kill this prick.”

The ugly thing named Bullock charged at the guy who stood calmly. As Bullock reached him, he grabbed Bullock's outraised fist and tore it clean off his wrist.

Bullock yelled out in pain, and before Bullock could recover, the guy snapped his neck.

The rest opened fire, the guy caught one, and the rest bounced off his body.

“I got you,” he said, and I nodded. He threw something over to Steffan and his crony.

Suddenly, I couldn't see, a strong hand grabbed me and leaped. I opened my mouth to scream.

“Don't, it's me” came the handsome guy's deep voice.

When my vision cleared, we were on a deserted street with no threat in sight. I stared at his angelic, hard, chiseled face.

“Thank you” I whispered and his stormy green eyes softened, he even smiled at me.

“It's alright, miss,” he said.

“Diana” I corrected, his smile broadened.

“Luka,” he said. I smiled back, then I remembered how Mr. Varane had laid down his life for me. Did he even make it out alive?
