Ally or enemy
"I'm really sorry about Rayan . He's usually a good guy. I don't know what the hell is going on with him today. I think he's still traumatized about his mother...," he starts to say, but then interrupts himself, not finishing the sentence. He probably thinks he's going overboard with his issues.
"Yes, I know his mother died. I went to the funeral with my mother because she works at her father's company," I explain.
"Oh, that's okay, I guess. Don't take it too much to heart. I'm sure he'll be back to his old self soon."
"Are you his partner or something?" I ask curiously. I'm not looking for information about him because he's a jerk? okay, well, maybe I am. It's good to know these things, isn't it?
"Oh, God, no! We happen to be friends," he says.
"Why?" I ask, and realize how that sounds. "It's not like I mean you can't be with the jock anymore because you're a minor or something? You know what, I'll shut up now." I groan, shutting my mouth before sinking deeper into that hole. She laughs.
"It's okay. I know what you meant. I'm an intern here, so I had a rough start too," she tells me.
"When did it become bearable for you?".
"Yesterday," she says with a completely straight face.
"Great. Then I'll die before I adjust," I tell her grumbling, which makes her laugh more.
"Easy, girl, I'm just kidding. But to answer your question, Rayan and I became friends last semester when we had to pair up for labs." Before I can even answer him, a deep voice comes from our side.
"I thought I made it perfectly clear that this is not your place, scholar," a guy's voice suddenly says.
I look up and see a guy with wavy black hair, baby blue eyes, pink lips and a straight Roman nose looking down at us. He also has a square jaw and is tall and muscular. He looks to be at least six feet tall. He's a very attractive guy, and he looks at Kate as if he wants to devour her, but also as if he seems annoyed with her existence.
"That's not what you were saying the other night, you idiot !" snapping at Kate .
His jaw tenses for a second before he answers her.
"I already told you it was a mistake," he says between gritted teeth. "And that you never mentioned it again."
"Yeah, whatever, Adam . Go away if you're going to be a complete nuisance . I'm busy talking to my friend . So, as you can see, you're interrupting," she blurts out to who I now know is Adam . I can tell by her voice that she's hurt by everything she just said.
"Leave her alone, asshole," I snap at her, wanting to defend her. We're not friends yet, but I have a feeling we could be. She's not as stuck-up as everyone else seems to be, and I like that.
"Ooh, fresh meat. Well, well, well... who do we have here?" she asks, looking at me as if she just realized I was here. He smacks his lips. I don't bother answering him because, based on his words alone and the way his eyes just flashed with pain, I'm guessing they're something. And if they're not, then they're definitely orbiting around each other and she wants them to be something.
"Leave her alone. Rayan has his eye on her," Kate says and I want to die.
"No, he doesn't," I tell her.
"Well, if he doesn't, then you can come over and let me rock your world anytime you want, baby," she says, smiling at me.
"I'm not interested," I tell him.
"Get away from her, pig!" says Kate as I reply.
We don't get to say anything else because in the next second, Rayan is behind Adam and slaps him in the back of the head.
"We don't fuck animals! Last time I checked, this one looked like a cow." He snorts before pushing Adam away . He doesn't even give me a glance. Yes. The guy definitely hates me for some reason. I pretend his words don't affect me and turn my attention back to the book on my screen.
"Sometimes they can be such assholes," Kate mutters under her breath.
Thankfully, I'm spared the response as the teacher enters and gets ready to start our math class right away.
Don't ask me how I know it's him, but I feel his gaze fix on my back. It's like that for the entire class. Every time I look behind me, my eyes collide with his electric blue ones.
It's as if they want to consume and devour me with their intensity. He makes no secret of the fact that he stares at me. The hostility seems to say they are coming more towards me and I have to quickly turn around to look straight ahead again.
Everyone who has ever said that demons come with a pretty face has been right. There is no doubt in my mind that there is a demon lurking beneath the surface of all that is Rayan Riverside. Clearly it is me he has set his sights on, to play with me. I just hope I make it through this year intact.
