CHAPTER 4 Regrets
After talking with Eden for a while, I was just about to fall into a deep slumber when I heard a noise that jolted me awake.
I opened my eyes and saw Brett standing beside my bed. Memories of the betrayal flooded my mind. I wanted to lash out at him, but I wouldn't allow myself to.
"What are you doing here? You finally remembered your wife is here?" I asked, managing to keep my voice neutral.
"I came to see how you are doing. I'm sorry, my love; I was caught up with work," he replied, a concerned look on his face.
"How do you think I'm doing? I'm stuck in a hospital bed," I retorted. My anger was beginning to surface; if only I didn't know what work he was caught up with, it would have been much better.
"I know, I'm sorry; you know how much I love you, but still, I have to fulfill my responsibilities." He said it, his voice barely above a whisper.
"You're sorry?" I scoffed under my breath. You should be sorry for what you did, fool. My heart was itching, and that made my heart boil.
"I am," he said, his eyes pleading for forgiveness.
"Forgiveness?" I laughed bitterly. "You don't deserve forgiveness. You deserve to suffer like I have." I said in my mind, "Oh, how I wish to cut off his neck.
"I know you're angry, but this reaction of yours is too much," he said, his voice soft.
Just as the tension between us was about to escalate, the door opened, and Dr. Jeff and Eden walked in. We both turned to face them.
I didn't even know when Eden left the room, but all the same, he was still his Alpha's Gamma.
"Good afternoon, Ellissa," Dr. Jeff greeted me with a smile. "How are you feeling today?" I smiled too, knowing that my bond with Brett would end soon, real soon.
"I'm okay, I guess," I replied, not wanting to get into the details of my pain; after all, my heart hurt more.
"And how about you, Brett? How are you holding up?" Dr. Jeff asked, turning to Brett.
"I'm hanging in there," Brett replied, his expression turning serious. "But how is Ellissa really doing?"
Dr. Jeff hesitated for a moment before delivering his unfortunate news. "Well, the good news is that she will make a full recovery physically. However, due to the accident, Ellissa has suffered from a miscarriage, and she will never be able to conceive again."
I felt like someone had punched me in the gut. All the anger and all the pain inside me turned to sheer devastation, and only after what Jeff said did I remember I was pregnant. I looked at Brett, and for the first time, I saw genuine sadness in his eyes. Great! He should suffer!
"What? How can that be? When did she become pregnant?" Brett exclaimed, and his voice rose.
"I'm sorry, Brett, but that's the truth. She has suffered some damage to her reproductive system," Dr. Jeff explained. Oh, the reproductive system," Dr. Jeff explained. Oh, God, he was really a good actor.
"I don't understand; Ellissa was never pregnant," Brett said, shaking his head in disbelief.
"Well, it's simple. She can never bear children again because she just lost her baby." Dr. Jeff spoke gently.
Brett fell silent, his eyes staring into the distance. I saw tears welling up in his eyes, and it angered me. How dare he cry after what he has done to me?
"I need to be alone," I said, turning my face to the wall.
The room fell silent as Dr. Jeff, Eden, and Brett left. I felt like my heart had been ripped out of my chest. All my dreams of being a mother and of having a happy family were shattered the very moment Brett betrayed me.
I looked at the ring on my finger, the one Brett had given me. It was a symbol of our love, or so I thought. Now, it was a reminder of the betrayal and of the hurt he had caused me.
I closed my eyes and let the tears flow. The pain was too much to bear. I wanted to scream, to shout, and to curse the world for what it had done to me.
But in my heart, I knew that the only one to blame was Brett. He had ruined my life, my dreams, and my future. And for that, he would never earn my forgiveness.
I lay on the hospital bed with tears streaming down my face as Brett stalked into the room, his normally handsome features contorted into a mask of fury. He was a sight to behold in his anger—tall, with piercing blue eyes and a muscular build that spoke of hours spent in the gym. His sharp claws were digging into his palms so hard that they drew blood, and I could see the muscles in his jaw clenching with barely contained rage.
"Brett, what's wrong?" I asked him, my voice trembling with fear.
"How... when did you get pregnant?" he asked through gritted teeth, his eyes flashing dangerously.
"I only found out today, Brett. And I lost the baby as well," I replied in a meek voice.
Brett's eyes narrowed dangerously. "You lost the baby? How could you? I was supposed to have an heir, a son who would carry on my legacy, and you were supposed to be the mother."
I flinched at the coldness in his voice. It was like I didn't matter to him anymore like all I was to him was a way to continue his bloodline. I knew that he wanted an heir; I knew I was just a baby-making machine, but I don't think he would be this cruel to look at me like he could kill me. But even as I thought this, I knew that I had to be stronger for myself and stand up to him.
"How could I have kept the baby? I had a freak accident, Brett. And why are you acting like it's all my fault?" I asked him, my voice rising.
"Because it is your fault, Elissa. You couldn't even give me an heir, and you call yourself a mate? A mate who can't even bear children?" He sneered at me.
