Chapter 7 The Banquet

Daniel stood there dumbfounded, thinking that he must have misheard.

He was fired?

Fired without any warning?

Beside him, Scarlett also had a momentary pause and then a smile appeared on her face, fleeting.

To her, Daniel was just a backup plan.

Of course, Daniel's position was already quite good. Despite being relatively young, he had climbed to the position of HR director at Riverdale's largest logistics company, with an annual salary of several hundred thousand.

However, Scarlett had high standards, especially after seeing Elizabeth find Ryan Murphy. Her standards had since risen.

She believed she wasn't much worse than Elizabeth; she could find someone like Ryan Murphy or even better.

Of course, they judged a man's worth based on his financial strength.

"Mr. Campbell... What's going on?" Daniel didn't care about Scarlett's expression anymore. After a short moment of confusion, he quickly asked.

Mr. Campbell looked at him with indifference and said, "Our company has been acquired. The new owners have made changes to the management."

“The new owner is a young man, and the first thing he said when he came up was to ask you to leave. It is out of my hands."

Daniel wanted to ask something else, but Mr. Campbell had already turned around and said, "I have things to do, you know who you offended."

After that, he turned and left. Daniel slumped into the nearby chair. He had offended people before, but among those who he had offended, there couldn't possibly be such a powerful figure who could acquire this company. He...died without a clear reason.

On the other side, after the acquisition was completed, under Chloe Ross's arrangement, Me. Campbell chose to stay in the company and continue overseeing its operations, but as a salaried employee, no longer a boss, while Matthew just became a mere figurehead!

For Matthew, this was a good thing. He didn't understand all these business matters, leave it to the professionals to handle.

When the matter was finished, Chloe stood up and said, "Well, I guess I managed this matter. I'll leave first."

Matthew also stood up, saying, "I have something to do, let's go together."

Until now, Chloe had not mentioned anything about compensation.

In fact, Matthew really wanted to appear in front of Scarlett as the boss now, but he had something to do, so he had to leave.

The short-haired beautiful woman had been coming to see him around 12 o'clock these past few days, and it was almost that time.

Chloe adjusted her glasses and smiled sweetly, saying, "Okay."

The two of them walked out of the company, and Matthew exhaled and said, "Manager Ross, I still don't know how to thank you, and there's probably a lot more I'll trouble you with in the future. Let me know how much compensation would be appropriate for you."

Chloe smiled slightly and said, "As for compensation, forget it. You are a diamond card user at our bank, as long as you make a request, our bank will fully cooperate with you."

Matthew was taken aback, unexpectedly diamond card users at Portman Bank had such high privileges.

"Of course, if you really want to thank me, you can do me a favor, accompany me to a dinner tonight." Chloe smiled sweetly and said, "In simple terms, just pretend to be my boyfriend."

Matthew paused for a moment, then nodded and said, "No problem at all."

Chloe's eyes lit up slightly, then nodded and said, "You better not go back on your word! I'll call you tonight and come pick you up."

Matthew nodded.

During their conversation, they arrived at the entrance. After bidding farewell to each other, they went their separate ways.

The car drove away.

At exactly 11:20 in the afternoon, Matthew arrived on time at the entrance of the construction site. As expected, just as he reached the entrance, he saw the girl with short hair walking out of the site with a lunchbox in her hand, wearing a disappointed expression.

When she saw Matthew, her eyes lit up and she ran over to him.

"I thought you weren't coming," she said with a smile as she approached him.

"Yesterday, I went to the bank to check my account balance. You didn't deceive me," Matthew sighed.

"So, are you willing to go back with me now?" the girl asked, her eyes shining.

Matthew nodded. "Yes."

"Yes!" the beautiful girl pumped her fist and exclaimed, "Night Guard Number Zero is finally returning to this world."

"Night Guard Number Zero?" Matthew furrowed his brows. "What does that mean?"

"We are a secret unit, so we all have our own code names, mostly given in numbers. The more formidable one is, the lower the number. You were the Number Zero of Night Guard before, the strongest weapon!" she explained.

She then continued awkwardly, "But because you disappeared for three years, many people thought you died in the last major mission. So, the title of Number Zero belongs to someone else now. But as long as you regain your memory, I believe you can reclaim it soon."

Matthew scratched his head, completely unable to understand what she was saying. He cleared his throat and asked, "What do I need to do to regain my memory?"

"Well, I'll take you to see Dr. Bennett now," the girl said. "Dr. Bennett is the best doctor in our Night Guard and one of the best doctors in the world."

"Okay. By the way, I still don't know how to address you." Matthew remarked.

The girl hesitated for a moment, then scratched her head and said, "I'm currently referred to as Number 66. As for my name, you should be able to remember it once you regain your memory."

Matthew felt a strange sensation. Calling someone by a number code name made him feel like he was calling a technician.

She flagged down a cab and they both got in.

Their destination was not a hospital or clinic, but rather a place Matthew was very familiar with.

The Garden District!

Yes, their destination was the Garden District!

"Because we planned for you to come back for work, we bought a house in the building next to yours. Both Dr. Bennett and I live there." the girl explained, smiling.

The two quickly arrived at their destination.

Dr. Bennett, also known as Evelyn Bennett, was a woman, quite different from Matthew's imagination.

He had initially expected Evelyn Bennett to be an older person, but when he saw her, he was surprised.

She was beautiful, even more so than beauties like Elizabeth. And she appeared to be under thirty, very young.

When she saw Matthew, her expression wasn't very pleasant. She gave him a cold look and raised her beautiful eyebrows, saying, "Amnesia?"

"I suppose." Matthew replied.

"Lie down on the couch," Evelyn Bennett coldly instructed. "I'll go get something."

After speaking, she turned around and walked towards the bedroom.

Matthew felt a bit awkward. He cleared his throat and quietly asked, "Um, did I owe the doctor any money before?"

"Not really," the girl with short hair chuckled. "It's just that when you were in Night Guard before, you kept confessing your love to Dr. Bennett, saying you would only marry her. This time when I came to find you and investigate your information, I found out that you gotten married. It seems to have made Dr. Bennett a bit angry."

"She liked the old me?" Matthew was astonished.

Was he really so capable in the past that even beauties of this level were interested in him?

"Not really. Dr. Bennett rejected you so many times." The girl laughed cheerfully.

Matthew was speechless. Why would she get angry just because I got married?

"Don't talk nonsense," at this moment, Evelyn Bennett came out. She took out a pocket watch from her pocket and said coolly, "Keep your eyes on the pocket watch."

The pocket watch began to sway from side to side. Matthew's eyeballs followed the movements of the pocket watch.

Evelyn Bennett also started speaking, her voice no longer cold, but instead exuding an incredibly gentle feeling.

Slowly, Matthew felt a wave of drowsiness come over him. He slowly closed his eyes, and at the same time, gentle whispers continued to ring in his ears.

"You are Matthew Parker, born in Prince Ford City. At the age of 18, you..."

Along with the voice, images followed, guiding him, and countless memories began to surface in Matthew's mind.
