CHAPTER 2

AVA CLARKE

I find a beautiful, big kitchen, and Lucius goes on about the kind of antique decoration in the house. He tells me that I can live with them and take care of his only daughter.

We return to the living room and climb the long staircase.

"Mystic Fell is a small town, but I'm sure you'll adapt quickly, we didn't talk about your university through the messages.", Lucius says, holding my bags, when we're at the bottom of the stairs.

"Oh, yes! I got into the university in this town, I'm looking forward to it because my parents also studied there a long time ago."

"Did your family live here?", he asks, staring at me, and I nod.

"Well, I'm sure you'll have a good time here, my brother also goes to this university, and you could talk about it, but Damien is a difficult person.", he says, smiling, and I frown.

"Well, on this side are all the guest rooms, which are 10 in total, and one of them will be your new room, and I hope you like it. And on the other side are our rooms. Could I ask you something unusual, Ava?"

"Yes, of course!"

"My brother is a difficult person to live with, but don't worry because he doesn't stay in this house for long, and Elara is very shy with people she hasn't met yet. I wanted to warn you that this part of the mansion is very restricted."

He's trying to tell me that I can't go to the other side of the mansion, but he's trying to say it in polite words.

"No problem!", I say, smiling, and he looks relieved that I've agreed.

"There's food in the kitchen, and you can feel free to eat at any time, this is your room, we've organized everything and prepared it for you.", he says, opening the door and putting my bags inside the room.

"When does Elara usually wake up?", I ask, holding the door and still looking at him.

"Well, she's a girl who likes to wake up very early but don't worry, have a good night, Ava. And don't hesitate to call me if you need anything.", I nod, watching him walk away quickly.

I sigh as I enter the room and close the door behind me. Likewise, I look around the room and see what a large space it is. Furthermore, I feel like a princess as I look at the large bed in the center of the room.

This room looks different because the walls are in very light colors as if it were a room made for a woman. I walk over to the long glass window and pull aside the white curtains, looking out at the night landscape.

I smile, feeling eager to start my new life in this city.

Furthermore, I opened my suitcases and started organizing all my clothes and things in the room. There is a large bathroom with a golden bathtub, and I take the opportunity to take a quick shower and put on comfortable clothes.

It's very cold outside, but the climate here is very pleasant. I'm wearing my favorite pajamas when I hear the sound of my cell phone.

It's my aunt and uncle, and I promised to call them when I arrived, and I need to do it now. I'm lying in bed talking to them when I hear a childish giggle.

I frown, thinking I'm imagining things, but I hear the same childish giggle coming from outside my new room, and it makes me get out of bed and look at the closed door.

"I'm very tired from the trip, and it's very late now. I'll talk to you tomorrow. I love you.", I slide my cell phone out and walk barefoot to the door when I hear footsteps.

Still frowning, I quickly open the door and look both ways down the corridor, seeing no one there. I think I'm too tired and imagining things that aren't there.

It's too dark in here for an eight-year-old girl to be playing at this hour, and I remember that Lucius said she was playing.

"Hello?", I ask, looking down the dark corridor, but there's no one, and I close my eyes, smiling.

"You need to stop acting like a crazy girl, Ava...", I say to myself as I leave my room and close the door behind me.

I follow the light up the stairs, seeing that I'm alone now, everyone is asleep, and I can't make much noise.

I walk barefoot to the kitchen to get a glass of water. Furthermore, I'm on my back drinking water when I feel that someone is watching me right now.

I gulp down the water quickly, still holding the glass in my hands when I turn around and scream loudly to see a tall, white-haired man looking at me with a smile.

"Holy shit!", I shout, opening my eyes wide and putting my hand over my heart.

"Oh my God!", I say this, breathing hard and trying to calm my heartbeat.

How did he get here, I didn't hear anything?

I stare in silence at the man in front of me. He's tall and slim with straight white hair, and I can see a few strands falling over his eyes. Bright green eyes.

He is Damien, Lucius' younger brother.

"Hello, my name is Ava, and I'm your niece's new nanny. Sorry to react like that, but you scared the hell out of me...", I say, smiling nervously when I see his eyes on my body.

I look down and see that my favorite pajamas look very indecent at the moment, it's a short blouse and short shorts around my thighs, and I feel embarrassed to be like this in front of him.

"Hello, little mouse.", he says in a husky voice, and I frown when I hear him call me that.

"I'm sorry, what did you call me?", I ask, stepping back when I see him approaching me.

I feel my back hit the fridge as he stands in front of me. I take a deep breath, smelling his expensive perfume.

Why are he and Lucius so handsome?

They have a different kind of beauty from everyone else, they seem unique.

"Little mouse. Don't you agree? You're small and like to venture out into the dark. It's a perfect name for you, little mouse.", he says, smiling provocatively, and I feel irritated at that moment.

Looking at him now, I remember what Lucius said about him, he said that Damien is a difficult person, and now I see it.

"My name is Ava.", I say, looking at him with a serious expression, and I stop breathing when he brings his face close to mine and looks at the neckline of my pajamas.

I feel strange around him. When I was in front of Lucius, I thought he was a very polite and kind person, but in front of his younger brother, I felt a kind of danger and seduction at the same time.

"This is going to be a lot of fun. I'm going to love playing with you, little mouse...", he whispers, looking at my lips, and I see him smile and quickly walk away from me as I stand here.

He drives off, and I take a deep breath, realizing what has happened here. When I was in that taxi, I thought I'd have a peaceful life in this city, but I could see that he was going to keep annoying me, and I couldn't let that destroy my new life.

I grab something to eat from the fridge and hurry back to my room, and I don't see anyone this time. I close the bedroom door and lie down on the big bed before closing my eyes.

Furthermore, I can still smell his perfume, and I still can't understand how he got into the kitchen without me seeing him.

I pull the blanket over my body and turn off the bedside lamp. Today has certainly been a long day for me, and I'm feeling very tired.

Tomorrow I have the day off to meet Elara and look after her, and the next day will be my first day at university, and I snort in annoyance when I remember that Damien is also studying there.

God!

Little mouse? Really?

I sigh, trying to calm down and let sleep take over, and this time there's no childish laughter outside my door.

I'm almost asleep, listening to the cold night wind beating against the window.

Furthermore, I have a new life now.

I've never looked after a child before, I have no siblings, and it came as a total surprise to me when Lucius decided to hire me to look after his only daughter.

The pay is very good, and it was one of the reasons that made me take the job so quickly.

I turn off the alarm on my cell phone, rub my eyes, and sit up in bed. I look at the room, fully lit with daylight through the large window.

Likewise, I get up and head to the bathroom for a quick shower because Lucius says his daughter always wakes up too early.

After showering and putting on clean clothes, I head towards the exit and control myself not to scream again when I see a little girl standing outside the door.

This family likes to show up without anyone seeing, and I need to get used to it, or I'm going to have a heart attack at some point.

I sigh and look more closely at the girl in front of me, she has black hair, white skin, and green eyes like Lucius. She looks a lot like him.

She's wearing a purple dress and long white socks, and I notice that she's holding a pink stuffed rabbit in her arms.

Furthermore, she's a beautiful girl, and I understand that the genetics of this family are perfect.

"Oh, hello! You must be Elara.", I say, smiling at the girl, who winks and walks away.

I see her heading toward the stairs without saying anything to me.

She didn't like me either? How is that possible?

My desire for a quiet life is fading fast.

I walk down the long corridor and the stairs quickly, hearing voices in the kitchen. When I enter the room, I see the three people sitting at the large table.

Lucius smiles when he sees me, Damien stands up quickly, and Elara keeps looking at me with a serious expression.

"Good morning!", I say this while smiling and watch as Damien quickly leaves the kitchen as if he doesn't want to be around me after what happened last night.

"Sit down, Ava!", Lucius asks, pointing to a chair at the table, and I sit down quickly, still looking at the girl.

"Don't be a shy girl, Elara. Say hello to Ava, she's a really nice person, and she'll be your new nanny. It's important that you let her get to know you better.", he says to the girl, who nods and looks at me again.

"Hello, Ava!", she says, and I smile when I hear her cute voice.

"How was your night, Ava? I hope you slept well...", Lucius says, and I smile again.

"Yes, the bed is very comfortable.", I say, making him laugh at my joke.

I look over at the table as I am starting to eat my breakfast and see that Lucius and Elara are drinking something from a shiny silver cup. I don't know what it is, but I don't ask either.

"Today is Ava's first day with us, and you need to behave and treat her like a good girl, okay? Don't forget to be nice, dear...", I see him touch his daughter's face as she gets up from the table, walks over to me, and pulls on my arm.
