Chapter 2
Kara
I didn't sleep all night.
I cried the whole time.
My eyes became swollen and red. The worst part was that I still felt like crying.
Last night, Stefan insisted I stay at his house, but not for the reasons I expected. Maybe his conscience wouldn't allow him to kick me out in the middle of the night. But instead of apologizing, he left with his driver, and my mind wandered.
Had he gone to see Sara, the traitor? Would he stay with her? Would he love her as he used to love me?
Tears streamed down my face as I touched my belly. I felt helpless, trapped in a whirlwind of emotions. The contract on the table reminded me of reality. According to his rules, our legal marriage had ended. And Stefan Stefan offered me more than $50,000 to leave, causing no trouble.
His money couldn't heal the pain and betrayal I felt. Stefan (my mate) had left me pregnant and stabbed me in the back. How could a werewolf reject his mate?
I thought about my parents and the shame I would face when I told them about the divorce. In our family, divorce was an aberration, something that had never happened before. And it would get worse when I told them I was carrying a baby in my belly.
Why had Stefan fallen in love with Sara? Many werewolf men in the pack desired me, and women envied me for my beauty. But the man I loved had left me for my best friend.
I swore I would show them they made a mistake. The cook interrupted my thoughts and reminded me of Stefan's presence.
"Hello, ma'am. What would you and the Alpha like for breakfast?" she asked.
"The usual for me. I'll be the only one eating today. The Alpha hasn't come home," I replied, my throat tightening.
Breakfast barely touched my lips. I felt worse and worse and disoriented until I finally lost consciousness and fell to the floor.
I don't know how long I was unconscious. When I woke up, I was in a hospital room with Amanda. She was the maid from the mansion. Amanda looked at me worriedly.
"Amanda, what happened?" I asked weakly.
"You fainted, Luna," she replied. "I called the Alpha to come to the hospital, but he hasn't answered my previous calls."
My heart raced as Amanda answered a call. I wanted to ask her not to do it. I didn't want Stefan to know about my fainting, but a part of me was eager. I wanted to know if Stefan cared about me.
"Mr. Stefan! I'm anxious. I know you don't like to be interrupted while you're working. I'm sorry for calling you so many times. Luna fainted, and we're at the hospital! The doctors have run medical tests, and we're waiting for the results."
I heard Stefan's voice on the other end of the line. A woman laughed. He was with Sara.
"I can't right now, Amanda," Stefan replied, and my heart sank even further. "She's not my wife anymore."
Amanda looked at me sympathetically, and I felt a wave of shame.
"Leave me alone, Amanda," I said, and she left the room.
I felt humiliated again and cried until the doctor arrived in my room.
I wiped my tears, trying to compose myself amid the shocking news the doctor had given me.
"Kara," the man said, a good friend of my father and my trusted doctor.
I knew something was wrong. Stefan didn't have a pleasant expression on his face. The last thing I needed was another piece of bad news.
"What happened to me, doctor?" I asked, still dazed.
"I'm afraid I have bad news, Kara. It's about the baby," he said. His expression was neutral.
"What? Have I lost it?" I exclaimed, fearing the worst.
"No, but you have a high-risk pregnancy. You're at risk, Kara. Your body is weak. I don't know if you'll be able to carry two babies," he warned.
"Two babies? No, you're mistaken, doctor," I replied, incredulous.
"No, you'll have twins, Luna. Where's Stefan? He needs to know this," he insisted.
"No! He knows nothing, doctor. Please, I beg you not to tell my family, not even Stefan," I pleaded, aware of the rumors that could spread and my parents' judgment.
I demanded that another doctor attend to me. The most experienced gynecologist in the hospital arrived and performed an ultrasound. As the doctor looked at the screen, she informed me of the unexpected news.
"Do you see this sac here?" she pointed at the screen. "Those are two babies. Congratulations, Luna! You're having twins! But we need to take good care of you. You're weak."
The idea of divorce and having two twin babies overwhelmed me. I had always wanted a large family. But the news of the divorce had tarnished my dreams.
"Is there a risk of losing them?" I asked fearfully.
"Yes, you could have a miscarriage. I need you to attend all your medical appointments and take lots of vitamins."
"Please, don't let the news spread through the hospital! Nobody must find out," I begged, aware of the Luna's curse I had heard about.
"It's for the best. We'll keep your pregnancy a secret," the doctor agreed.
I left the hospital alone, my mind filled with thoughts and conflicting emotions. I walked to the river where Stefan had proposed to me a year ago. We had planned a future together, but now he was with Sara, and I was amid an emotional storm.
My hands instinctively rested on my belly. My nerves were harming the pregnancy. I regretted not telling Stefan about the babies when I called him the night before,
thinking it might change his mind and prevent the divorce.
Finally, I went to the company to collect some of my belongings. However, something strange caught my attention before entering my office. The door was slightly ajar, something I never did. I heard murmurs and laughter coming from inside.
Determined to confront the situation, I entered and found Sara sitting on Stefan's lap while he stroked her hair. Rage consumed me as I heard Sara's words.
"I love you, Stefan!" she exclaimed enthusiastically.
"I love you too, Sara," he replied, and my heart ached painfully.
Fury overcame me. I wanted them out of my office.
"Can I know what you're doing here?!" I exclaimed, furious. Sara was sitting at my desk, and Stefan seemed pleased.
Sara smiled maliciously when she saw me and hugged Stefan.
"This isn't fair. Get out of my office!" I yelled, feeling humiliated and displaced.
Stefan responded coldly.
"You're no longer my Luna."
"Maybe I'm no longer your Luna, but this is still my office," I protested, but Stefan had other plans.
"Wrong. It's my office now. You can't be here anymore because the company belongs to Stefan," he said, and Sara smiled triumphantly.
My tears welled up, and I felt helpless in the situation. I rushed out of the office, not caring what the employees who saw me devastated might think. I felt like I had lost everything.
Anguish, pain, and desperation overwhelmed me. I descended the building's stairs, crying inconsolably. I heard the footsteps of a woman approaching, but I didn't care to look at who it was.
Suddenly, I felt a push from behind. That made me lose my balance and tumble down the stairs. Despite the fall, I didn't lose consciousness. But I knew I had to return to the hospital. My babies were in danger.
I looked up, and that's when I saw Sara. She had been the one who pushed me.
I wanted to get up. I wanted to hurt Sara. That woman was driving me out of my mind.
My best friend. The traitor.
