CHAPTER 2

Autumn sat there for a long time, her face twisted in anger and shame but she did not believe it. This could not be. There was no way that Shawn could do this to her.?

She decided that the best thing to do would be to leave here first and then go to Shawn’s house but she would need her credit card returned first.

The young, blonde waiter returned and took one look at her, and nodded.

“Do you have something to tell me?” she asked and he shook his head.

“I’m sorry, Miss. There is nothing,” he said and she nodded then took her card from him and left.

It was only when she stood did she realize how tall he was. She could not even clear his shoulders and she had heels on. She did not dwell on it. She was maddened with rage.

Autumn called him severally but he did not pick up. Even as she was always in the car, she was desperately hoping that this was some lie and it was then that she checked her phone and saw what made her heart sink to her stomach.

“Multi-millionaire tech mogul set to get married to Mayor’s daughter,”?she watched the news over and over again and felt like she would stop breathing.

She pulled out her phone and dialed Kevin, Shawn’s colleague at work. He picked up instantly.

“Hi, Autumn. How are you? Oh my God, Did anything happen between you and Shawn? I did not know that you guys had broken up,” he said.

He had a high-pitched, whiny voice that she always found amusing but right now, it was just annoying.

“Kevin, do you know where Shawn is?” she asked him.

He sighed deeply and said nothing for a while before he spoke slowly.

“Yeah, told me that he was going out partying with his boys and when I checked his location, I saw that he was back at home. Seems like he is trying to throw you off,” Kevin said. She gritted her teeth and nodded.

“Thank you,” she said and she heard an exasperated sigh from the man.

“I am just saying don’t go doing anything stupid. I do not think that it is worth it. You should maybe think through this and…” she turned off the phone. She did not care what Kevin thought at this time.

She came to the cozy yet elaborate mansion that belonged to Shawn. She had the codes to the gate so she just keyed them in and went in.

He was standing just outside his door, his eyes on his phone, and a mixture of anger and shame welled up in her as she looked at him. He was so calm, so unbothered.

“Shawn!” She called out over the noise.

He turned to look at her. His blue eyes, as always seemed to be looking right at her soul but this time, there was surprise and shame.

She did not even need to ask to know that everything that she had seen on the news was true but she still had to ask. She wanted to hear the words.

She showed him the picture and the news that was on her phone.

“Is this true?” she asked him. He stared at the phone for a while then at her.

“Autumn, baby. It is not wha…”

“Do not fucking lie to me. Is what I am seeing her true? Tell me!” she screamed.

“Look. It is not exactly what you think. I can explain. I can…”

“What can you explain?” she asked, tears in her eyes.

She was even struggling to see his face, the strong chin and delicate nose, the pink, full lips, and the coal black hair.

“What can you explain, Shawn? Explain the fact that you have been cheating on me with the mayor’s daughter and not only that, you just decided to marry her like that, huh? You did not even…”

He cut her off just then when he threw his head back and laughed in a way that was just maniacal.

“What do you mean? You had to have seen this coming. There is no way that I will be able to put up with your ass. You are of no use to me and the only thing you do is just sit there and moan about how much you love me. Wake the fuck up. This is the real world and you are a boring ass girl that I just got tired of. Do you understand me?” he said to her.

She felt like the whole world would cave in like her heart had been ripped from her chest and at that moment, there was only one thing to do.

“It's over, Shawn. She said then she turned and left.

She wished her best friend was around but since she wasn't she ordered an Uber.

She arrived home and Aria was already blowing up her phone with texts and calls. She sat down in her sitting room and picked up the call.

It was a video call and Aria’s face stared back at her from her phone screen.

“Hi, Autumn.”

She smiled. “Thanks for calling, Aria.”

“Anytime. Wanna talk about it?”

Autumn shrugged, wiping off a stray tear. “What's there to talk about?”

Autumn shoved an ice cream into her mouth. She had managed to get one from her fridge, she didn't know she had some left over from the other night. Now she just wanted to stuff her face full.

“You know it's not helping you to just sit down here and stare at the wall all day and eat all that junk. I am starting to worry about you,” Aria said over the phone.

She was staring at Autumn with so much worry and concern. Autumn looked at Aria with eyes that were swollen and dark then she looked away.

It had been two hours since the breakup but every time she thought of it and even when she glanced at her phone and saw the marriage buzz, she felt like her heart was being ripped out of her chest again.

Autumn wanted to answer but she just could not explain. She could not explain it to Aria. She tried to but the only thing that could come out of her mouth was the same thing that had come out of her mouth since she had broken up.

“I am fine,” she said.

“I don’t think that you should be here for all this. The entire town is abuzz and they are kinda calling it the event of the decade. I think that you should get away. Come and meet me in New York to change your environment and get your mind off things.”

“New York?” she asked and her friend nodded.

“Yeah, if you want to. Just come meet me, okay? There are many other things in life except for that huge ass Shawn. It would help clear your mind,” she said. Autumn sighed heavily as she imagined it. It could help her.

“I guess that I need to get away from this shit town anyway. Just…get away,” she said softly. Her friend stared at her and then nodded repeatedly.

“It will be so much fun, I promise you,” she said, and then Autumn nodded.

She would go. Fuck Shawn and his fucking fiancee.
