CHAPTER 4
Autumn woke up with a splitting headache. She couldn't recall how she had arrived home last night.
All she knew was that she had bumped into a handsome stranger who stopped her from falling but before she could thank him he had dumped her on a nearby chair and walked away.
Autumn had thought his behavior was rude and she had no idea why she was thinking about the stranger now especially since her head was pounding and she had little memory of last night.
She gingerly sat up in bed and saw a note taped to the nightstand. It was from Aria; she was informing her that she wouldn't be available till later tonight.
Autumn glanced at the clock on the nightstand and groaned, the time was half past eight in the morning.
Her alarm clock blared and she picked up her phone, she saw a reminder that she had an interview with Marion Group Of Companies by 10 am.
“Shit!” Autumn mumbled under her breath.
She stood up from bed and popped some aspirin in her mouth before chugging a bottle of water. She took a quick shower and dressed up.
She still wasn't feeling wide awake so she stopped at her favorite bakery for a bagel and got coffee. Nothing kept her on her toes these two things.
The queue in the bakery was long and Autumn sighed. She was still feeling groggy and didn't have the stamina to stand in the queue.
After waiting for a little while she finally got her turn. She was so lucky as it was the last bagel, she inhaled the sweet, fresh, hot scent of the bagel and sighed contentedly as she took a sip of her coffee.
But no sooner had she stepped out of the line than she got cornered by someone.
“Excuse me.”
Autumn rolled her eyes. She didn’t want to excuse anyone till she had finished munching these things.
She faked a smile and turned to face the person but she stared back at deep blue eyes; the same eyes from yesterday.
Autumn gasped. She was about to thank him for saving her last night but his next words stopped her and made her seriously reconsider her gratitude.
“100 dollars, hand over the bagel.”
She blinked and stared at him to make sure her ears weren't playing tricks on her.
“Excuse me, what?” she questioned.
“I’m not in the habit of repeating myself.”
Autumn’s face scrunched up into a frown. Who the hell did he think he was to talk to her like that?!
“You walk up to me acting like an asshole and demand my bagel, who the hell do you think you are?!” Autumn challenged her eyes blazing with fire.
The man didn't blink or cower under her fierce stare instead he gave her a frosty look.
“That’s the last bagel. I want to have it, I'll pay you anything you want, but just give me the bagel,”
Autumn chuckled. This man was truly naive. What made him think she would accept money in exchange for her bagel?
As if he read her mind he added, “Everyone in New York wants something so just tell me what you want and I'll grant it.”
A job.
Revenge on my ex-boyfriend.
To heal my broken heart.
Her inner voice listed all the things she wanted but she ignored the tiny voice and settled on the man standing before her. He was dressed in a crisp black tuxedo with dark spiky hair.
His blue eyes shone like the sea and his Grecian face was well structured with his pointed nose. He looked like a wealthy man and was dressed as one but his attitude made her question his sanity.
Who the hell makes such an offer to a stranger for just a bagel?!
“I don't want anything from you. Stay away from me and my bagel!” she snapped at him.
“I need to have that bagel, lady, it's important,” he said in an urgent tone.
Autumn knew he was being tactical so she would release her bagel to him, maybe because he doesn't know her.
“It's important to me too,” she replied.
He gave her a weird look. “You don't know who I am?”
Autumn rolled her eyes. “I don't know and I don't care!”
There was a flash of emotion on his face but before she could read it, it vanished and she wondered maybe she might have imagined it.
“I can grant you whatever you want,” he said.
“Grant yourself a bagel. That's what I want,” Autumn replied with a smirk.
The man sighed. “You have to…”
Autumn glared at him, interrupting him sharply. “Leave me and my BAGEL ALONE!”
The way she yelled drew attention to them and most people stared at them while some ignored them. The man seemed to not want to cause a ruckus because he gave her a frosty stare before leaving the bakery while she rushed to the company she was going to.
The man watched as the woman left the bakery in a hurry before entering a taxi. He slammed his hands on his driving wheel as he adjusted his tie.
How would he go see his son without the bagel in his hands when he knew the kid loved bagels. How would he get him to talk to him now when he wasn't with his favorite snack?
If only the damn woman had just helped him out then he wouldn’t be in this situation.
He remembered the woman from when she had bumped into him at the club last night. He hadn't wanted to stick around because she reeked of alcohol and she was looking sexy in the dress she wore, he knew he might not have been able to keep his hands off her.
Now as he recalled his encounter with her in the bakery he disliked her. She hadn't even considered the fact that he saved her from smacking her butt on the floor to give him the bagel.
It was just a bagel to her but not to him!
He muttered strings of curses under his breath as he pulled out of the driveway. He was in a foul mood and now he would have to attend to today's activities like that.
It was true that there was a lot of bakery selling bagels but his son preferred only the one made by this particular bakery.
The only thought going through his mind was the woman. Who was this woman and why did he bump into her twice in a row?
He got to the office but still, he couldn't shake off the woman and how she had stared at him, he hadn't been opposed or challenged before and most ladies knew him so what was special about this woman?
Why didn't she know him or did she know him and she was pretending, waiting for the right time to strike?
He wished he could get the answers to all his questions. He just kept thinking, who the hell is the bagel girl?!
