CHAPTER 4
The employees scrambled out of the way when they noticed the boss coming. The department was a little bit shaken since the boss rarely shows up in their department ever since his cousin's brother took up the job of managing the affairs of the department.
Yet, no matter how the employees pretended to face their job and be diligent, some female employees still stole a glance at the boss. Ryan was not bothered by these stares since it isn't surprising to see ladies swooning at his sight.
But he didn't even dwell on it. His mind was completely filled with anger at what he's just discovered. He couldn't even imagine what he was going to do if his suspicions really turn out to be true.
The employees whispered in hushed tones when they saw Scott trailing after Ryan. Unlike Ryan who looked so angry and untouchable, Scott looked calm and collected. They couldn't help but wonder why the two bosses decided to grace their department with their presence today.
Chris looked up when his door suddenly burst open. He was just about to yell when he noticed Ryan and Scott. The scowl on his face turned to a smile when he saw them.
He stood up and walked to them. He looked at them, a little bit puzzled when none of them said anything. "What's wrong?," He asked slowly. Ryan just looked at him and Scott did the same thing.
"Scott, why aren't you two saying anything? What's wrong?," He asked again. Ryan threw the file at him and questioned angrily, "What's all that? What does that mean?"
Chris carried the file and looked at it, not even feeling offended with the way it had just been slammed on his face. His face revealed a surprised look when he read the contents of the file.
He looked at Ryan and Scott before facing the file again. He seemed to have gone speechless for a while not knowing what to say cause he realized why Ryan looked so angry.
"I'm listening," Ryan's cold tone resounded in the room. Chris was almost panicked. When did he start this job and he's already getting into trouble?
"I don't understand it also. This file was never even brought to my office," Chris vehemently refused the unsaid accusation.
Scott looked at Ryan curiously with an expressionless gaze. No one knows what he is thinking at that moment.
"I was told this is your job. If the file had never been brought to me by who knows... The blatant fraud would have gone unnoticed," Ryan complained.
"I'll look into it. I really have nothing to do with this and I'll prove it. I just don't know who would...," He trailed off, never finishing his words even though Scott and Ryan already understood what he is trying to say.
Scott probably understands better. Ryan opened his mouth to say something but then, he shut it back. To their surprise, he turned around and left.
Chris looked at Ryan's departing figure and turned to Scott. Scott didn't even let him say a word before he spoke, "I understand. I know you'd never do it. Brother just needed to refute his suspicions."
Saying these words, he left. Chris looked at the file and thought of Scott's words. Even though the latter was saying Ryan wasn't really accusing him, he also seemed to be pointing out the facts that Ryan was suspicious of him.
"Emily! Are we going to have a party? Why do we have to bake after all that tedious cooking?" Lena whined when Emily began to assemble the ingredients they needed to bake whatever they are planning to bake.
Emily frowned a little pissed off by Lena's endless complaints. "You know, you didn't really do anything. You didn't even help me while I was cooking so why are you complaining about baking now?" She muttered quietly.
Lena gave her usual dramatic gasp and got off the kitchen island she was sitting on. "I helped you wash the veggies so I still did something," She protested. "Baking cookies would probably take more time than cooking mom's favourite dish."
"But mom will still appreciate our efforts when she comes back after the long tiring day," Emily explained.
"I'll rather be out meeting the neighbours than getting my fingers sticky with batter."
Emily looked out through the kitchen window. "Look at the sky. It's already so dark and it seems like it's going to rain. Do you really want to meet new people with soaked clothes? I don't think they'd appreciate someone disturbing their little moments," She told Lena.
Lena angrily stuffed an apple into her mouth. Mom thinks Emily is too quiet for her age. That she's too timid... What timid!? What quietness!? She's the only one that knows that no one will be able to win an argument against Emily.
'He wasn't lying,' that small voice spoke in Ryan's head as he drove slowly on the road. He had left the office earlier than expected, no longer in the mood to deal with paperwork after all that had just transpired.
'I know. I could sense it... What have you been up to all day, Ray?' Ryan replied with a question of his own. ' What else could I have done? I can only sleep since you won't even let me out for just a minute, the wolf sounded aggrieved.
Ryan chuckled when he heard this. 'People will probably freak out if they see a black wolf running around on the expressway. We might get captured,' he tried to explain but the bored wolf was having none of it.
' You can just take a long trip back home like you used to do. Your excuse isn't good enough. I miss the woods and still don't understand why you would give all that away for this noisy city,' Ray argued.
Ryan remained silent after that. He knew regardless of anything, he wouldn't win the argument against Ray anyway.
'Your mom would be glad to see you back home,' the wolf tried to play the emotional card then when his first tactic didn't work. Ryan remained mute and continued driving.
Suddenly, it started raining cats and dogs. ' You see... The woods were still quiet then this city,' Ray tried again.
