CHAPTER ONE
“This has got to be some manner of mad joke from the moon goddess” Blake bellowed as he ran into the room filled with people who were supposed to be bubbly and filled with cheer from the excess wine they had consumed.
I on the other hand had found myself running after him for an explanation to what had happened just a few seconds ago.
Not only was I confused but also in a state of shock that really couldn’t be expressed.
The entire room stood silent and the DJ at the corner of the room had turned down the music he had been blasting from the speakers so he could adjust to the tempo of the room.
All eyes were now on Blake to figure out the reason for his outburst.
Deep within me I prayed that the reason I had in mind shouldn’t be it. That was all I could do about it
Pray.
“Blake honey is everything okay?” The Luna of the pack and at the same time, Blake’s mother asks as she approached him with curiosity.
He was never one to make public tantrums, in fact everyone knew Blake as the quiet mysterious heir to the throne of Adal pack; who was handsome beyond a measurable scale and he was aware of it.
“She!” he starts and points to me, making everyone turn their attention in my direction before he carried on speaking.
I kept praying strongly that he was not about to do what I thought he wanted to do. Not only would that be the worst thing to me but also the public embarrassment would be enough to make me want to fade away into thin air.
I hated attention with every fiber of my being and now he’s gotten every paired pupil in my direction awaiting his words.
That my legs hadn’t given up beneath me was a strength that I gave myself the credit for, on a normal day I would’ve passed out from so many eyes.
“She… she...” He stuttered, almost as if he couldn’t believe it and if I am not mistaken, also because of how irritated he was.
And I don’t know which part hurt me the more.
You may be wondering how we got here? Let’s rewind to the early hours of this evening
Earlier this evening…
“There is no crime in associating with your peers you know? You turn nineteen tomorrow, I wonder if you intend on downloading a mate from the internet” my mom jested as she walked into my room with a basket of clothing which belonged to her and probably my little brother too.
She was doing the laundry and the laundry room was just a few doors away from mine, so it was easy to hold a conversation with her.
“Stop that Madeline, you’re harassing the little girl” my dad yelled from wherever he was and I wasn’t even aware that he had been eavesdropping on our conversation.
The queen was hosting a party for the graduating class of Adal High school and every member of my school had been given an open invitation, all you needed to do was present your ID card and you’ll be let in.
I had decided that I wasn’t going to be leaving my house tonight but my mother had deemed it fit to make me a social butterfly like she is.
She was the more interactive one with a ton of friends and siblings whereas my dad grew up as an only child with just one friend whom I am not even sure he trusts enough to hold his car keys.
What the moon goddess was doing when she mated these two together, is something I cannot explain but she definitely knows how to whip a wolf recipe.
Because despite their contrast, it was obvious that they were truly meant to be and the love that blossomed in their marriage proved so.
Then there was me who took up my dad’s traits despite having two siblings as a middle child.
“Thank you Dad!” I yelled back to show appreciation of his support.
Support is indeed hard to come by these days… very hard.
“Little girl? Add an extra year to her age and we were married Duncan” my mom countered his words with an eyeroll he obviously couldn’t see but she hoped he would’ve felt it somewhere within his soul.
“Then I still have enough time on my hands. Twenty is still a year away”
“So, you intend on downloading your mate then?”
“Mom!”
“Just a very innocent curiosity because I have no idea how you plan on meeting your mate without leaving the house”
“I go to school”
“You saved your mate.exe file at Adal High?”
It was my turn to send her an eyeroll with a little frown, she was beginning to take the technology innuendos too far.
May I also add that my mother was the kind of woman who blamed your phone for everything?
For instance,
Mom… my hair is pulling out
‘Sorry darling, maybe if you reduced the amount of time you spent on your phone its rays could stop affecting you’
Mom… my throat hurts
‘It’s alright darling, probably next time you can remember to drink water as much as you remember to type away at your screen’
Mom… Lydia has been sick since Friday
‘Really? My goodness. Send my regards to her but you are aware that if only you reduced the way you’re on your phone, she may have recovered’
I do spend a lot of time in front of my phone, but it’s only because I really do not have much friends.
And I do not have much friends because I spend a lot of time on my phone.
It’s like a negative feedback mechanism, if you get what I mean.
“The point remains that I do leave the house” I defended myself once again.
“What assurance do you have that your mate is somewhere around your route to your school? There are tons of other schools in this pack with tons of wolves you could be paired with”
I didn’t know what else to say because she was right, we have over seven schools in this pack for children of my age grade and above and my mate might also not be in school.
“I can see that you’re beginning to change your mind” she said when I kept silent for a while trying to calculate my next excuse “Get dressed love, I’ll drop you off and I promise you… it’s going to be a night to remember”
