Chapter 2

I hugged June, I needed to get home.

" Be careful, please," June said to me.

I sure will be careful.

" I will see you tomorrow," I said to June, and she waved her hands at me.

I left the library, came out, boarded a cab, got in, and went home.

As soon as I got home, I opened the door, I knew Grandma would be at home. I got inside and saw her and I did not know where to start from as I did not want to make her upset.

" Good evening, Grandma" I greeted her

" Welcome my dear," she said back to me, her eyes smiling at me, she looked happy, and I felt so bad that I would be ruining that happiness with my questions.

I went into my room, it was the same way I had left it, not like I was expecting any changes too. I leaned on the wall. I did not know how to start up the conversation with my Grandma.

I entered the bathroom to freshen up. After I was done, I got dressed, in a simple gown, it always looked pretty on me, and I loved it as well.

I came out of my room, I met my grandma in the kitchen, she was dishing out our food.

I took mine to the little dining table we had in the house to eat. She also came too. She sat opposite me.

I know I had to tell her what happened at work, I could not keep it in me, I had to let her know what happened, maybe she would have a better explanation to give me.

" Something happened today," I said out loud, she looked at me, wondering what it was.

" What is that, what happened at work?" She asked me

I played with my spoon for some seconds because I did not want to tell her, no, I want to tell her but I hope she doesn't freak out.

" A woman came to where I work, you know the mother of that rich man, can't remember his name right now but he owns the estates and the businesses all over the place," I said to her, trying to sound calm

My grandma was quiet, she did not utter a word. She just kept mute and that scared me.

" What does she want" she asked

" She said she would be coming here to clear things, that you do know all about it, she must be mistaking me for someone else, or, do you not think so?" I asked her

" No" that was all she answered me.

" Tell me it is a big joke"

I said to her and she just sighed, I could see the worried look on her face, I could tell that she was not happy with what I told her. She looked uncomfortable.

I stretched my hands to touch hers

" It's fine grandma" I wished I could assure her more, she looked unhappy and worried. That must have triggered something.

At this point in my life, I wished my parents were here to explain all of these to me.

I have been here with Grandma since I was seven.

" Your parents had something with them" and then grandma brought me out of my thoughts, what would my parents possibly have with them? I am not sure my parents were on the same level with them. They were comfortable but not on the same financial level as that family.

I thought hard, but could not grab it. My head hurts.

I finished eating and had to clear the dishes.

I went back to my room but noticed that Grandma still stayed in the sitting room. I shouldn't have told her, but she still has to know and the woman will come here.

I went back to Grandma, and sat beside her, holding her hands, her eyes were fixed on the wall.

" Do you want to tell me more about it?" I asked her, hoping we could talk more about whatever was going on.

" I'm sorry, Emily, your parents had only that option to free themselves, her son looked responsible for caring for you," she said, confusing me more.

Why is everyone sounding so crazy, what is wrong with everyone today, maybe June and I are the only ones that are in the right frame of mind.

What is this about?" I asked her

" I should have told you earlier but I did not know that she would be here so soon for it," she said, leaving me dazed.

I breathed in and out but had an instant headache. I was not having any of it or even understanding what she was talking about.

I told her that she needed to rest herself, maybe she would wake up tomorrow and be better, or maybe I would wake up tomorrow and all of this was wrong.

I helped her stand on her feet, leading her to her room. I opened the door for her, and she got in. Switching off the light in her room, I told her goodnight.

I went to the kitchen to get cold water to drink, I must be going crazy, trust me, I would not forget this day in such a hurry.

I sat down and thought about my parents. When I was seven, I had last seen them, passed away in a car accident, and left me, all alone, well not alone like that because Grandma took me in. I moved to this place and stayed with my grandma.

But the void, their absence still hurts, I think about them all the time, maybe all of the things that happened during the day maybe, they are connected to my parents.

And that woman was right all along?

Well, I did not know what to say for real, I felt sad that my parents were not here, and then I felt tired of all of it.

I dropped the cup that I held, went to my room, lay in bed and closed my eyes, drifted off to sleep, not knowing the next day was waiting for me.
