Chapter 4 No Second Time for Secret Joy
Gabriel extended his hand politely, but Teresa swallowed hard and didn't reach out to shake it.
So the man she had encountered in the hotel hallway that morning was Gabriel, and he seemed to be quite familiar with Liam.
Gabriel's deep eyes never left Teresa's face, and Liam broke the silence, "Sorry, my girlfriend isn't feeling well today."
"It's okay." Gabriel withdrew his hand and his gaze from Teresa, a meaningful smile playing on his lips, his eyes inscrutable and hard to read. "Ms. Bennett, did you sleep well last night?"
Teresa's body began to tremble uncontrollably.
"Teresa, last night you..." Liam's face changed completely, his previously gentle eyes now filled with shock, confusion, and an unbearable pain.
He looked at Teresa in disbelief, his voice trembling as if he feared hearing something that would shatter him.
She felt all her explanations were futile, under Gabriel's all-knowing gaze, she felt exposed and vulnerable.
"Wasn't Ms. Bennett volunteering as a translator at the Frostpine Grand Hotel last night? Liam, you didn't know?" Gabriel's tone was openly mocking.
"Teresa, is what he's saying true?" Liam's voice trembled even more, unable to accept the reality or believe that his trusted girlfriend had deceived and betrayed him.
Teresa couldn't hold on any longer. She slowly closed her eyes, hiding the despair and pain in them, but the tears burned her cheeks and her heart.
It was all over.
She and Liam could never go back to how they were.
The humiliation of last night and lies had completely destroyed the fragile trust and feelings between them.
"I'll go get the car, wait here," Liam suddenly said, his voice cold and stiff, as if speaking to a stranger.
He didn't look at Teresa again, nor at Gabriel, turning and leaving decisively, his back desolate and lonely, carrying deep disappointment and pain.
Teresa leaned weakly against the cold wall, her body drained of strength, slowly sliding down to sit on the ground.
Gabriel looked down at her. "How do you plan to explain last night's escapade?"
Teresa raised her head, her tear-filled eyes looking at him, filled with despair and helplessness, her voice hoarse. "What do you want?"
She had completely given up resisting, letting fate take its course.
"What do I want?" Gabriel sneered, his tone full of mockery and disdain. "Don't worry, I won't tell Liam."
Gabriel suddenly straightened up, his tone calm as if the threat just now was an illusion.
Teresa was stunned, she hadn't expected Gabriel to say that, unable to understand his intentions or discern the truth of his words.
"But," Gabriel's tone shifted, his cold gaze falling on Teresa's face again, "you better pray that last night's incident doesn't happen again."
Gabriel returned to his office, barely sitting down when his assistant knocked, "Mr. Garcia, Miss Lewis and her uncle are here; they are waiting in the reception room."
His temples throbbed, the chaos of last night lingering like a shadow, disturbing his thoughts.
The Lewis family visiting at this time, their intentions were clear.
"Let them in," Gabriel said steadily, his voice revealing no emotion.
The reception room door opened, and Unity walked in, affectionately holding Preston's arm.
Unity was meticulously dressed, her Chanel suit highlighting her elegance, her makeup flawless, every gesture exuding the charm of a socialite.
Beside her, Preston, slightly overweight, wore a friendly smile, his eyes gleaming with the shrewdness of a businessman.
"Mr. Garcia, sorry for the unannounced visit," Preston broke the silence first, his tone polite.
Gabriel nodded slightly, gesturing for them to sit, getting straight to the point, "Mr. Lewis, Ms. Lewis, what brings you here today?"
Preston cleared his throat, his tone turning serious, "Mr. Garcia, we are here mainly for Unity's matter."
He paused, emphasizing his words, "We heard about last night's incident. Unity suffered a great deal."
Gabriel observed them without expression, waiting for them to continue.
"Unity is a young woman, her reputation is crucial. I think you owe us an explanation." Preston finally revealed their intention.
Unity lowered her head at the right moment, looking as if she was about to cry, her eyes quickly reddening, tears threatening to fall, making her appear pitiful.
Gabriel inwardly scoffed, the Lewis family was indeed impatient; their act was well-rehearsed.
"What kind of explanation do you want?" he asked calmly, his tone neutral.
Preston's gaze locked onto Gabriel, a flash of cunning in his eyes. "Mr. Garcia, we're reasonable. Given the circumstances, we don't wish to pursue it further. A marriage alliance between us families would suffice to resolve this matter."
A marriage alliance, that was their ultimate goal.
Gabriel found it even more laughable, they had finally revealed their true intentions.
He didn't respond directly to Preston, instead turning his gaze to Unity, asking, "Ms. Lewis, how much do you remember about last night?"
Unity's body trembled slightly, she raised her head, her eyes flickering, her voice trembling, "I only remember drinking too much, then you helped me into the room."
She deliberately omitted many details, only emphasizing that Gabriel had taken her into the room, trying to shift the responsibility entirely.
"And then?" Gabriel pressed, his gaze sharp, as if trying to see through her.
Unity's face paled, she bit her lip lightly, continuing her fabricated story, "Then you..."
She didn't finish her sentence, but the implication was clear.
She sneaked a glance at Gabriel's expression, but he remained calm, like a still pond, making it hard to read his true thoughts.
Gabriel watched her poor performance coldly, inwardly mocking her lies.
But he didn't expose her immediately; he needed more time to uncover the truth of last night.
His intuition told him that things were not as simple as they seemed.
Why was Unity's room so coincidentally next to his? Why did the hotel surveillance conveniently malfunction at the critical moment?
