Chapter 2

I'm still grappling with the acceptance of Hector, at least until I figure out if he poses any threat to me. Besides, this engagement is just my father using me to boost the family's status, and that manipulative intent disgusts me. What I desire is peace, happiness, and the safety of those I care about.

About 10 minutes later, Hector's secretary sought me out.

"Sorry to disturb your time, Miss White. Since you're now a member of MC, the boss would like you to help him with some simple tasks before the cruise reaches its destination."

"Alright, I'll do my best to assist him."

Once again, I can't fathom why he needs me, but the secretary claims the job is straightforward. I have no reason to refuse, and it's a good opportunity to understand what Hector wants from the Nelsons.

Soon, Hector assigned me my first task—writing an email for his client, which posed no issue for me. I submit the task, return to his room, and receive the second task—making a cup of coffee with half sugar and no milk. That's also no problem; I quickly bring the coffee back to him, perfectly at the right temperature.

Having excelled at the tasks he assigned, he stopped talking and just looked at me, curiosity evident in his eyes.

"Your work abilities are outstanding. With your skills, why consider starting from the bottom as a junior employee?"

I calmly look into Hector's deep eyes. "I've been studying abroad, not much experience on my resume. Applying for positions back home is still challenging, let alone with MC Group."

"I'll have my secretary arrange a suitable position for you."

"No, I want to advance based on my own merits."

I promptly declined his suggestion. After learning there were no other tasks for me at the moment, I exited Hector's room. It seems like Hector is testing my capabilities.

As long as my identity remains undisclosed, I don't need to hide my skills at work. To climb the ranks at MC swiftly, I must ascend to a high-level management position, seek revenge against the Nelson family, and uncover the truth behind my mother's death. Additionally, I know my temper won't change, and I strongly dislike inefficient work practices.

From this perspective, Hector appears rational, giving me the impression that we're alike in our approach to work—potential good business partners. However, it's not the right time to judge his personal qualities. After all, we've mainly been discussing work so far.

Next, I need to consider whether Hector and I can become partners. Using MC as a stepping stone for my revenge seems somewhat unethical.

Looking at the engagement on this luxurious cruise, Hector values his fiancée a lot. Therefore, whether he intends to go through with this marriage signifies his seriousness about collaborating with the Nelson Group. Thinking about this makes me feel somewhat weighed down.

What surprised me was that not a single guest doubted Hector's ability to marry me, and most were consoling him on gradually winning my love. Is developing my strength by entering MC a wise path? I shake my head firmly. Since I've decided on this path, I must continue moving forward.

As for Hector's attitude, as long as I don't do anything harmful to MC's interests, his feelings toward me are just a personal matter. After all, I never considered marrying him.

What surprised me even more was that, before the cruise reached its end, Hector frequently assigned me seemingly absurd tasks, like moving next door to make his work more convenient... Is he treating me like a personal assistant?

Finally, the cruise comes to an end, and I take a deep breath. Taking care of Hector is truly exhausting.

It's not just about small tasks like making him coffee; even when the buttons on his shirt are undone, he asks for my help! The most unreasonable part is that he coolly enjoys my services! I even suspect that if the journey lasted a few more days, he might even request me to share his bed!

Following the guests to his private villa, I didn't expect his next request to be having me pretend to be a bride and getting engaged to him! Annoyed, I put on a luxurious dress. Fortunately, the engagement party was arranged as a masquerade.

As long as I carefully maintain my mask and follow the plan, the engagement party should go smoothly. The news of the CEO of MC being jilted by his fiancée at the engagement party is unpleasant, and I don't want this scandal to affect my future work at MC. I can't bear it!

Thinking of Hector's secretary's instructions, I carefully check the dress and mask given to me, a silver-white rose mask. Everything is ready. I put on the veil, my face completely invisible in the mirror, hoping the engagement party goes smoothly.

At this point, Aldrin should have already delivered my suitcase to my private apartment, and I could go back after the party ended. Seeing my father in the courtyard, I quickly feel uneasy. I communicate with him only in ways he would recognize.

Then, I see Hector approaching me with the same couple's mask, casually taking my hand, drawing the attention of all the guests.

Luxury cars gradually line up at the entrance of the villa. This time, many late-arriving guests should be connected to my father. After all, his daughter marrying the CEO of MC is a very honorable event.

It seems the reason he didn't appear on the luxurious cruise was at Hector's request. Feeling Hector's warm hand, my anger gradually subsided, meeting his concerned gaze.

"Don't worry, I've got everything tonight."

I was curious, but he didn't say more, smoothly navigating through my father's friends, not showing any signs of annoyance. My father approached, advising me to nurture my relationship with Hector. Impatience in my eyes couldn't be concealed, and my hand holding Hector's trembled. Sensing my unease, Hector released my hand and placed it on my waist.

"Don't worry, I'll take care of her, simply because she's my wife."
