Chapter 3 Under supervision
“Dr. Flores, Dr. Knox will come soon, and she will show you around.” The receptionist made Olivia move her gaze and look at her. She forced herself to smile.
“Thank you.” She had another glance at the man, who still stared at her, then she turned her back to him. She found a seat, and she just waited. Even though he stood far from them, Olivia was certain he heard the whole conversation. He was a doctor as well, and she only hoped, even if they weren’t supposed to like each other, not even a bit, they would be able to work in one place.
Dr. Knox appeared soon. She looked nice, and she welcomed Olivia friendly. She showed her around, introducing her to many other doctors and nurses.
She organized some clothes for her to wear, and she waited patiently while she changed. When she was ready, she led her to the A&E department, and Olivia felt shocked when she noticed she led her straight to the doctor, who she saw in the reception before.
“Olivia, he is one of our surgeons, Dr. Asher Carter. Asher, this is Dr. Olivia Flores. Would you be so kind to take care of her? It is her first day, and I don’t want her to get lost.” She laughed.
Asher looked at Dr. Knox, and the dislike was apparent in his expression, but he nodded.
“Great.” Then she turned to Olivia.
“If you have any problem or question, do not hesitate to find me.”
“Thank you.” Olivia nodded and smiled at her. She wasn’t looking forward to stay with him, but she hoped they can handle the situation.
They both watched her leave. Olivia struggled to speak, and she quickly tried to find the words in vain, as Asher had something to say.
“I think I should tell them to put someone next to you all the time. How many you kill a day?” He scratched his head like he was thinking. “Or what is your method? Should I ask them to lock all the blood up that we have got in stock before it disappears, causing the death of many patients? Believe it or not, we are here to fix them, and I’m not sure we can deal with the job if you are working against us.”
Asher’s words angered Olivia, and she didn’t want to be nicer to him than he was to her.
“I’m guessing that it could be a pain to cover you each full moon night. I heard many werewolves get mad, as they can’t control the beast in them. They kill many humans each year. How about you? Have you ever…?”
“No.” His voice was more growling than angry. Even so, it didn’t scare Olivia.
“I am a doctor as well, and I think you won’t be surprised if I say this isn’t the first hospital I work for. So just calm down, werewolf, and get some job done.”
Asher’s smile froze on his face. Apparently, he didn’t know what to say, and Olivia liked that. She just turned to the collecting rack and took a board out with the patient details.
“Wow, a young man, yummy. This is my favourite trait. I’ll get his neck this time,” and she growled at Asher, then she laughed and she turned her back to him. She walked to the patients’ bed, and she started to work. It took her a while to find the patient without Asher, but she was proud of herself when she did.
She treated patient after patient, and she didn’t see Asher at all. She suspected he was watching her from afar, as his scent was in the air all the time, but she tried to ignore him.
When it was time for her to finish, she changed, and she was happy to leave. She walked to her car, and she just wanted to sit in it, but she jumped when she heard Asher’s voice.
“What?” she asked, holding her chest.
“No one died today, and that answered my question. I just want to warn you now. I checked how much blood we got. Don’t dare take any.”
Olivia was pretty much angry, but she was mentally tired as well.
“Just mind your own business, werewolf.” She said, and she sat in her car. She turned on the engine and drove away.
When she finally got back in her apartment, she tossed her things onto the floor, and she sat down, trying to calm herself. She didn’t understand Asher at all. He was working in the hospital, so probably he was a rogue. He was a dangerous creature, just like her, but both of them chose human life. Why was he so mean to her? Did it mean she needed to search for another place to work?
She filled her bath with warm water, and she sat in it for a while, trying to calm her tortured nerves and trying to make her body warm up, which she loved.
She couldn’t think of anyone else. Only Asher appeared in her mind. From her past, she knew a few werewolves who lived with vampires in peace. They worked together in a place where everyone could be themselves. They were all kind, as they knew they were all the same. Harmless, trying to find a home somewhere.
They helped each other. A vampire scientist helped a werewolf scientist because their goal was the same. Human body was simple to fix. The real challenge was to fix other creatures.
She hoped that with time, Asher would understand this as well, and he would understand she had no bad intention at all. She really wanted to stay here for the next ten years, therefore she tried to think of a way she could make Asher soften, and bear the fact they would work in one place.
She tried to sleep, but she wasn’t tired yet. After turning around a lot, she decided to give up on sleeping. She sighed in disbelief and got a book to read instead.
