Chapter 10
Sebastian
As promised Miles shows up at the apartment ready to drag me out if need be. He’s even brought Sadie with him as backup.
“You had to bring her?” I say with a shake of my head.
Sadie huffs and crosses her arms. “How else will I make sure you pick the perfect Omega if I’m not there? You men have no idea what's good for you. No way was I going to let you make this life-altering decision without my help.”
I roll my eyes and grab my suit jacket from the couch. “It’s supposed to be my choice.” I remind her.
“Yes, but I know you. You’ll find everything wrong with the girls and then leave without picking anyone. Not going to happen on my watch buddy.” She slaps my arm playfully and turns on her heels marching over to the elevator.
“Sorry, she insisted and you know I can never refuse her,” Miles says with an apologetic smile.
His eyes move over to his wife and there is an affection in his eyes that always makes me jealous. I’m sure I’m one of the last Alphas looking for something more than convenience in a relationship, but it’s not like we can all fall in love. We need an Omega I like it or not. Most Alphas end up sleeping around after the bond is made, so it’s not a huge deal for them. The idea of infidelity makes my stomach churn. After seeing my father step out on my mom it makes me sick thinking of ever doing that to my bonded.
Mom seemed to have expected my father to be unfaithful and I’ve heard of others who are the same. It’s like they are prepared for that eventuality. Yet another reason I hate those schools.
“Come on, we don’t want to be late.” Miles walks with me to the elevator and pulls Sadie against him as soon as she’s within reach of him.
He can barely keep his hands off her whenever they’re in the same room.
We jump in Miles’s SUV and head out of the city and toward the school. It's about thirty miles outside of city limits and sits smack in the middle of a giant piece of land. When we turn off the main road and onto a slim two-way street I know we’re heading the right way. There is a line of cars down the street. I sigh and slouch back in my seat and glance out the window. A small house sits a couple of miles down the road, and a motion from behind the house catches my attention. I watch and a flash of fur comes running through the field. My heart stops for a split second and starts racing so fast that I’m worried I'll shift right here in the car.
A small female wolf dashes by with a small ball of fluff in her mouth. Her head snaps in my direction and our eyes lock. The window is tinted so she can’t see me but somehow her eyes are focused right on me. She slows down for just a second and stops long enough to focus on me. Her head tilts in an adorable way and that's when I notice what she’s carrying in her mouth is a pup.
What the heck?
I glance around but don’t see anyone following her or joining her when she finally breaks eye contact and takes off again. My eyes follow her until I lose sight of her.
Was she alone? Where was her pack? It wasn’t safe for a female wolf to be alone, especially without a pup. Where did she come from? And why am I itching to shift and take off after her? There is a tightness in my chest that I try to message away with the palm of my hand but I shake it off.
The car moves forward and we move that much closer to school, and that pain in my chest gets stronger.
“Seb? What’s wrong?” Sadie asks when she turns in her seat to look at me.
I must have made a sound that had her worried.
“Just a little-“ My words fail me as I throw the door open and stumble over to the side of the road releasing everything inside my stomach.
“Sebastian! Oh my…what’s wrong?” Sadie comes up beside me and slaps my back. “Did you eat something bad? Miles, we need to get him home.”
“What about the presentation? If we don’t go we have to wait another year.”
“He’s sick Miles, we don’t have a choice,” Sadie says sounding slightly disappointed as well.
“Come on. Let’s get you back inside.” Miles says with an arm around my waist.
He helps me back to the car and I climb in and only feel the slightest relief but the pain still feels like my heart is being ripped out.
What the fuck is this?
Elena
The pup and I had fallen asleep soon after eating and I woke to the sound of several engines. Fear builds up and I’m on my feet forgetting the pup was sleeping against me making him whine in protest. I grab him and run through the house looking for a way out. I can’t exactly open a door in this form! Shoot what do I do?
A door opens and I run straight for it.
“Oh!” The woman says before I push past her and take off. “Be careful honey!”
Thank the goddess she doesn’t try to stop me. I run and chance a glance at the road to see lines of cars on the road. That's when I realize what today is. Presentation day. These must be all the Alphas…speaking of which…
A strange sensation has me looking toward one of the cars. The windows are dark but something inside me pulls in that direction. I stop and try to make sense of what I’m feeling and I can sense eyes on me. Or maybe more than one someone…
All of these cars have Alphas in them…they could sense me! I take off running again but as I get further away the pulling sensation turns to pain making me stumble over my own feet. The pup falls from my mouth as a whine leaves me and I collapse. My stomach rolls making it hard for me to steady myself let alone run. What is this?
I’m panting and whining in pain for a couple minutes but then suddenly the pain ebbs. It turns to a slow ache allowing me to get back to my feet and grab the pup. Now that I’m not in pain I can start running again. Maybe I should focus on whatever just happened to me but I can’t focus on that now. Instead, I keep running. The pain is a mild ache until I move down a small dirt road I come upon. Why is this happening? I turn back in the direction I had been and the pain subsides again, so I continue in that direction.
Any slight change hurts like crazy, but it helps me stay on a specific path. Whatever is helping with the pain must be important…I need to follow it. I do this until I hear the sounds of a city. When I step out from a row of bushes there are buildings everywhere. Streets cut through them and there are cars going every which way. One car in particular catches my attention. It’s the one I saw before when I first got that weird feeling. I don’t know what it is about who is in the car, but I didn’t start feeling the pain until I saw it.
When it starts to get too far away I feel the pain again. Who is in there and why does it hurt when they get too far away?
Doesn’t matter right now, they are moving in the opposite direction of the school and that’s good enough for me. I follow the car not paying much attention to the people walking around me. It’s like I have tunnel vision and I can’t seem to stop myself from chasing the thing giving me relief. The car stops suddenly in front of a large building and a man climbs out from the driver's side. I spot an alley nearby and run over it to hide and watch from across the street to see whoever is inside. The man runs around the car and opens the passenger door. I lose sight of him for a second but when he comes back into my line of sight he’s helping another mine climb out.
The other guy looks like he can’t stand up right. A woman joins them and something inside me twists when she touches the sick guy. A low growl works its way up my throat but I bite it back before it escapes. What the heck is that about? The three of them go inside and I feel that ache again. I’m too far away but I can’t go inside an office building like this and I lost my clothes when I shifted. A naked girl and a wolf walking into a building is bound to draw a lot of attention. What do I do?
