Unfinished Business

Alexa walked out of the restaurant after paying the bill, and she was left with only a few cents to take a taxi. It was at that moment that she received a call from Josh.

Her hands trembled. “Why is he calling me?” She thought worriedly, and after a lot of contemplation, she picked up the call.

“Where are you?” he asked, and she frowned.

“Who is asking?” He had dared to call her even when he threw her out in the middle of the night and called her family low life.

“The wedding ring—I want it back. It’s a family heirloom, so bring it to me.

Alexa’s eyes widened in shock; she couldn't believe that he had called her only because of the wedding ring, and here she was thinking that he was already regretting it.

“Of course," she said, then hung up and looked around, then walked back inside the restaurant and walked to the receptionist.

“Excuse me,” she called, and the lady looked at her.

“Is the restaurant currently hiring workers?” She needed a job because the little savings she had to survive this week were gone in a one-day meal.

“The position of manager is vacant; if interested, drop your resume.”

“My resume?"

“Yes, your certificates, experience, and all,” the receptionist answered. Alexa sighed because she didn't have any of those to show.

“I am hardworking; does that count?” She asked foolishly, and the lady chuckled.

“Unfortunately, no”

Alexa left the restaurant feeling sad, so instead of taking a cab, She decided to walk back home; it would save her some money.

Hance was done with his meeting, but just then his driver came to pick him up, and they drove out of the restaurant. Hance looked outside when he saw Alexa walking; the sun was extremely hot, and it was obvious how tired she was from her face.

“That’s the lady who cried at the roadside," the driver chuckled, and Hance didn't reply. He was trying to suppress his humanity and drive past her, so he closed his eyes and leaned on the chair.

“She is sweating so much,” the driver added, and Hance frowned. That's when he realized that the car was moving slowly.

“Why are you slowing down?” He asked angrily, and the driver by name, Caleb, swallowed hard.

“I am sorry, sir,” he apologized, and Hance took a look at the lady once more. He had never helped a lady with a ride, but he assumed he was doing it for his driver.

“Help her if you wish,” he sneered, and Caleb had a bright smile. He parked the car close to Alexa before saying.

“Come in; I will drop you off. It’s so hot out there,” he said, and Alexa shook her head in denial.

She was never going to get into a stranger’s car. “No need, but thanks anyway," she answered.

Hance frowned when he heard her response. He thought of her as that type of lady who pretends to be of descent and, in the end, gives in.

“I won't kill you; just hop in" Caleb kept insisting, Hance wined his glass down, and Alexa was scared when she saw him. How could she forget this man? He was the most terrible person she ever met.

“Let her walk; it suits her personality. Just drive” Hance ordered the driver while looking at Alexa; she swallowed hard and was happy she didn't get into the car.

The man looked like a serial killer, she thought.

Caleb didn't have a choice, so he drove away. "That's what happens when you choose to help women; they make you beg to help them,” he said angrily, and Caleb didn't reply.

He always believed his boss had a bad relationship with women; he saw them as his life enemies.

“What an arrogant man?” Alexa hissed; she finally arrived home and then spotted a lady sitting in front of the door.

She chose to ignore her and opened the door, then the lady stood up and frowned at her. “Why do you have those keys?” she asked, and Alexa took several steps backward. Was she Ami’s niece?

“Ami gave it to me,” she answered nervously. If this lady was Ami’s niece and she sent her away, then she wouldn't have anywhere else to go.

"Oh, okay, I am Lydia... Ami’s niece's friend,” she introduced, and Alexa nodded.

“Do you want to come in?”

Lydia joined her inside, and she looked around the place. “You just moved in here?” The place still looked like no one lived there.

“Yes, last night.”

“Hmm, have you met Annie?” Lydia questioned, “She is Ami’s niece and also my best friend; we used to work at the hotel together until she found a better job,” she added.

“I don't know her." Alexa walked to her jewelry box and took out the wedding ring before staring at it.

Josh had given her this with so much love, and now he is asking for it to be given to another woman. “Is that yours?”

“It used to be,” she replied with a bitter tone.

Lydia and Alexa talked casually for a while before Lydia left because she was working the night shift at the hotel. Alexa had to sulk alone in the four corners of her bedroom.

The next morning, Alexa freshened up and got dressed to go find a job. She couldn’t sulk all her life; she had to somehow repay her father.

But before leaving, she took the wedding ring with her, and then there was a knock on the door. She pulled the door open and found Lydia standing there.

“So, Annie permitted me to stay at her place before leaving. I hope you don't mind us staying together,” Lydia explained, and Alexa chuckled. Of course, she doesn't mind.

“I am stepping out; you must be tired after your night shift, so come in."

“Where are you going?" Lydia was the curious type; Annie used to be her only friend until she left. Now she had only Alexa to talk to, even though they just met yesterday.

“I need a job.”

“Oh, where is your CV? What type of job are you searching for?”

Her question hit Alexa hard because she didn't even have a proper CV. Since she didn't complete college, she doesn't have any certificates.

“I don't have any,” she answered sincerely.

“Annie’s post is still vacant at the hotel; we are cleaners, so we don't need a CV. Why don't you check at the hotel?”

Alexa’s eyes lit up. Was this lady sent to her by God? “I am coming with you.” Lydia didn't even drop her bag.

She clung to Alexa’s arm like she always did with Annie; she couldn't wait to call Annie and let her know that she had found a new friend.

Her action was weird to Alexa because she had no friends for the past few years, so she had forgotten how friendship functions.

They stopped a cab when Lydia said, “JKings Hotel."

"No,” Alexa said, shaking her head in denial.

She gave another location, and Lydia was confused. “Do you plan on getting a job there instead? And besides, that's a big company... They won't allow people like us inside.”

“I am not going there to find a job; I am going to deal with some unfinished business,” Alexa explained as she stared at her wedding ring.
