A Birthday Gift

It wasn't long before Alexa and Lydia arrived at the Adams Enterprise. This technology company was owned by Josh’s family; he was one of the many heirs and also the third in charge of the company.

Alexa could count the number of times she had come here. The first time she came was to give lunch to Josh, and he got angry and told her not to bring him lunch again.

The second time was when Josh didn't come back home after work. She got worried and came to the office to look for him, and again, he got angry with her for being a paranoid wife.

“What are we doing here?” Lydia asked because since they arrived... Alexa only stood there, staring at the building.

“Let’s go in.” Alexa strayed to the entrance and was about to get in when the security guards stopped her.

“You are not allowed in here,” the guard she was once familiar with said. She raised a brow, confused.

“I only came to give something to Mr. Adams; I will leave at once.”

“I am sorry,” the guard apologized. He had received specific orders to not let Alexa or anyone close to her inside this building.

“Just let the lady in,” Lydia said with an impatient tone. It’s not like they were going inside to steal something, and she still doesn't understand what Alexa came here to do.

The guard ignored her and didn't let Alexa in. “Okay, you can tell Josh I am here with the ring. I am sure he will want to see me." Alexa was hurt; she knew Josh had asked the guards not to let her in.

That was a man she had abandoned everything for, and the way he treated her hurt.

“Tell me, is Josh Adams your husband?” Lydia was very smart; seeing the ring that Alexa said was once hers and now she wanted to see Josh Adams only meant they knew each other personally.

“We used to be married.” That’s all she said, and Lydia didn't speak further.

The guard felt bad for Alexa; he didn't want to let her hang out, but if he let her in, he would lose his job.

So he signaled for the other guard to go and let Mr. Adams know.

Alexa and Lydia lingered outside for a while before Kira walked towards them; she had insisted on coming to take the ring personally.

"Alexa,” Kira called, and Alexa felt hurt seeing Kira here. Josh never liked his women visiting him at the company, so what was Kira doing here?

“It’s Josh’s birthday; did you come here to wish him?” She had such a huge smirk on her face.

“I brought him a gift; it must mean a lot to you." Alexa smiled before taking out the wedding ring and showing it to Kira.

She was so happy, smiling at the ring. She had asked Josh about it, and he assured her that he would bring it. "That's so thoughtful of you." Kira smiled and was about to snatch the ring from Alexa, but Lydia seized it.

“You are the mistress?” Lydia questioned, and Kira frowned; even Alexa was confused. Why did she seize the ring?

“Lydia…”

“I understand what’s happening, Alexie,” Lydia chimed in. She hates women who walk around with high shoulders, ruining other relationships, and it was very obvious that this lady here was that type of person.

“You should mind your business, or else I won't spare you," Kira warned, she felt proud because she was going to be the young Miss Adam’s.

“Here is the ring." Lydia placed it beside Kira’s feet on the ground. “It’s on the ground, exactly where your status as a woman is.” After saying that, she held Alexa’s hand and pulled her away.

Kira’s eyes widened in shock. She stared at the guards, who quickly looked away and pretended not to witness the show.

She had never been humiliated in her life this way; she had come downstairs to humiliate Alexa and have fun because she knew Alexa was easy to push around, so who was this lady who dared disrespect her?

“Why did you do that?” Alexa asked once they were far from the company.

“If you didn't hit first, then she was going to do it,” Lydia explained.

“You don't even know me; why did you have to buy my case? Do you know who that lady is? She might ruin you without blinking an eye.” After all, Kira was Josh’s woman.

So if she asked Josh to deal with Lydia, then he would do that without thinking twice.

“You are Ami’s friend," was Lydia’s excuse. If Ami decided to help this lady, then it only meant the lady was kind.

“That doesn't mean you know me; it’s better to act dumb and let people crush you. You don't raise your shoulder if you don't have someone backing you up,” Alexa hissed before stopping a cab, and she got in.

Lydia thought for a while that she was right; she had acted out of impulse because she thought she was defending her friend. But she met this woman just last night; how can she call her a friend?

She got in as well before smiling at Alexa. “I am sorry; next time I won't be impulsive,” she apologized, and Alexa smiled.

“And if Kira comes for you, I will take the punishment,” Alexa assured her.

Alexa arrived at the hotel with Kira, and they both walked in with the guards greeting Kira casually. She was loved by almost all the staff at the hotel.

Soon they arrived at the manager’s office, and he seemed to be so busy as he was making phone calls. “Mr. Bruns,” Kira called, but he shooed her before continuing with his call.

Not long after, he was done before he turned to Kira and said, “Your shift ended; why did you come back?” He seemed annoyed to see Kira because whenever she showed up, it was to annoy him.

Mr. Bruns was in his early thirties; he was not too tall or thin, but he had average looks.

"Hello, sir,” Alexa said with a respectful tone. That’s when Mr. Bruns noticed her.

“And who are you?”

“Alexa”

“So you remember how you had begged Annie not to leave and that you would never find a cleaner as hardworking as her?” Kira explained, and Mr. Bruns frowned.

“I am not hiring her." He had already guessed where she was going with that explanation. Alexa felt hurt as she folded her hands together.

“Please hire me; I don't have a degree, but I am hardworking. If I don't do well, then you can fire me at once."

"Yes, sir, she is an honest person... Please hire her." Kira folded her hands as well.

“Please hire me.”

“Please hire her.”

Mr. Bruns held his head frustrated, and then his phone rang. “Sir, the chairman is here,” someone said from the other end.

“You are hired; you start tonight, so don't be late," he said as he walked out of the office, leaving Alexa and Kira.

"Yaay!” they both yelled happily. Alexa smiled as she felt a weight leave her shoulder. Kira was God-sent.

Hance Williams was pushed into the hotel by his driver. Workers lined up from the door to the elevator, welcoming him, but none of them dared to stand any closer to him or even look into his eyes.

And it was this feeling of fear that made Hance satisfied. Then Mr. Bruns hurried towards him, but he made sure he was standing a meter away from this neat freak.

“Good day, sir; we are happy to have you here.”

“Do you have a choice?” Hance sneered, and Mr. Bruns swallowed hard.

“This way, please,” he led the way as they got into the elevator. Hance looked around before curling his lips in disgust; just now he had seen a stain on the elevator walls.

“Deduct money from your salary and renew the elevator,” he ordered the manager, and his driver had a sympathetic look as he glanced at Mr. Bruns.

“Of course, sir.” Bruns was used to dealing with this arrogant man, and he knew Hance hated to be disrespected.
