Chapter 4

"NO DAD! DON'T LEAVE ME!"

Ava was having a nightmare. In her dream, she watched as the metals pierced through her father's body and blood gushed out. She tried to run to save him but she was stuck under the rubble of the collapsed building, she was helpless and she watched with tears in her eyes as he gave up the ghost.

Gale Edinburgh stood afar off, making mockery at her misery.

In her pain and tears, a handsome young man ran over, removing every debris pressing against her leg and took her out like a knight in shiny armor.

Suddenly, everyone in her dream faded into dust and she woke up panicking. Balls or sweat covered her and her body trembled.

In her confused state, her eyes opened clearly and what she saw first was breathtaking. A colorful chandelier dangling magnificently above her, and the aromatic scent of the air freshener lingering in the air lighten up her spirit.

Ava felt weak and struggled to stand up from the bed she laid on. Removing the needle from the drip that was pierced into the veins of her hand, she noticed her dress had been changed. The thought that a stranger must have undressed her and seen everything disturbed her but she brushed it off.

She ambled towards the window that was graced with golden color curtains and saw the magnificent view spread outside the window.

The mansion is on a whole different level compared to Gale Edinburgh's mansion. His could be called a prison and this one would easily fit as a royal palace.

"How did I get here?" She wondered.

Suddenly the images from yesterday flashed vividly across her eyes and she remembered how she fainted after the gory and unexpected conversation she had with her boyfriend.

She felt a striking pain in her heart. It was normal for him to get angry but cutting ties with her that fast was unbelievable.

"I didn't know you were awake already," a deep baritone voice sounded from behind her and she turned immediately.

"You!"

Her heart raced at the sight she saw. A young man 6 feet 2 inches tall, having a physique that is no different from a greek god. His bright golden eyeball under his thick eyebrow was hard not to notice. He had a high bridge nose that mounted proudly above his plush pink lips.

"Are you okay?" He asked.

"Yeah, yeah I'm fine," she replied shyly.

She wanted to ask what happened to her dress but couldn't bring herself to.

The loud sound of her heartbeat shook her body and she swallowed her saliva.

"That's good news!"

"I guess so." She replied shyly.

"Come and have your seat and eat this meal prepared by my chef. He's got the best hands in the city. The doctor said you are malnourished and you need every strength you can get."

Ava stared at him, studying him. She was trying to figure out whether his intention was pure or evil. But it was impossible to read those golden eyeballs, they would only make her fall heads over heels and that is the last thing she needed right now. Right now, her life is a complete mess, she can't afford to make it even more complicated.

Luther understood and quickly spoke.

"My bad. I haven't done a proper introduction." He dropped the tray of meal in his hand on the round wooden table beside the bed.

"My name is Luther Herald. You fainted yesterday and I brought you to my home." He confessed.

The name rang a bell in Ava's ears but she couldn't figure out where she heard it from.

"What's your name?"

Ava rubbed her head and replied, "Mine is Ava Faine. I'm nobody."

Luther smiled. He had dug up some information and found out what happened to her. On the news, a title stood out,

~Poor Girl Rejected A Billionaire on The Altar.~

An old picture of hers was used but it was definitely her. The old man beside her is someone he knew very well. It wasn't a surprise that she rejected him.

"Now, will you eat?"

Ava dragged her feets and sat on the bed. It was a simple meal; french toast and black coffee. It looked to her that he had exaggerated a bit too much for a meal like that.

She took a bite and drank the coffee then wiped her mouth.

"Mister, could you allow me to stay a few days here. Only for a short time until I get things sorted out?" She bit her lips tightly as she asked.

Luther paused for a moment before he finally nodded his head to indicate he agreed .

"You can stay but you have to earn your keep."

"Really?! Thanks so much. I'll do anything you ask me to do," Ava rubbed her hands together in appreciation.

"I haven't decided what you will do. Give me till the end of the day." He replied.

"Alright, I can wait." She smiled. "I have another favor to ask."

"What is that?"

"Can I borrow 5,000 dollars? I'll pay you back, I promise."

Luther understood that she must need it for something important so he agreed. Stunned, Ava didn't expect him to agree so easily. She thanked him and kept eating bowing her head trying hard not to look at his gorgeous eyeballs.

"My maids will help you take your bath when you're done eating," he said and left before she could even reply.

Few moments later, two young ladies dressed in the same uniform came and bowed.

"Ma'am, it's time for your bath."

"Don't worry, I will do it myself. I'm not used to others bathing me. Just show me the way to the bathroom."

"Please don't make this hard for us. If we don't do this, we'll get punished." They quickly pleaded.

Although it was Luther that gave them the instruction, they knew too well that if they disobeyed or delayed it, they'd get punished by someone more powerful than him who would scream at them and punish them for any little mistake.

Ava didn't understand. She thought they were referring to Luther but he didn't strike her as a brutal person when they spoke some minutes ago but nonetheless, she had no intention of making things tougher for the maids so she agreed.

They helped her up and in an hour, they were done cleaning her up and she dressed up in the pink short gown the maids picked for her.

She was shocked at the price tag she saw on the cloth and tried to reject it but the maids insisted that she wore it.

Luther came in just as she was about to stand up and he froze. The pink color of the gown he had bought while she was still asleep complemented her skin and gave her beauty a boost he never thought was possible.

"A…Are you done?"

"Yes"

"Need a lift? I'm on my way out."

"Thank you."

Ava stood up and followed him to the parking space. There were several expensive and elegant cars parked side by side. The rays of light that shone on them bounced back, radiating a glow. Ava couldn't help but marvel at such beauty.

The world of the rich is definitely different from the poor.

She thought.

Luther halted at a red sports car and the car beeped in response to the remote in his hand.

"Hop in!"

In Ava's eyes, Luther looked even more handsome. The red color of the car fit him perfectly. Sluggishly she dragged her leg and got into the car. The light came on and it roared to life.

Throughout the journey, Luther could not help but steal multiple glances at her. She was indeed beautiful.

Beep! Beep!!

A phone rang in the car. It was Ava's phone. She stared angrily at the phone and she picked up.

"What did you do bitch!" The usual annoying voice yelled through the phone.
