The shadows were one of the big enemies of the of the human race and the night creatures, the clans of human and night creatures could have hatch a plan to defeat the shadows but they allowed fear get an hold of them. 
Group of teenagers, saw themselves interested in saving the human race. But it was not just their decision, it was their faith,
James, Peter and Kate created a team, they had no idea their team was going to expand but they had faith that they were going to save the human race and stop the shadows.
They met with Kia who was an informant for the shadows, the shadows were scared to send only him so they sent Mary with him, the team grew found of Kia and Mary. 
James knew something was off with them but they made him look bad to the team, soon he was kicked out of the group and few days after he left, Kia and Mary showed their true colors and left the rest of the team to die. 
James made his way to the team after they fought to save their life, and they pretend like nothing happened but little did they know that the shadows was ahead of them, 
They read James mind and they could sense the darkness in him then they used it against him, they put the faith of his friends in his hands, 
It was either he save his friends from dying or he chose to save the world from been destroyed by the shadows?
